I would like to try and piece together the recording chronology of the 'New' album ie what was recorded when and where. Over the past fifteen months I've noted a few pieces of info which have emerged but I'm sure there is a lot more info out there. I'll start by noting the producers and the songs they were involved with as most of the info concerns the producers: Mark Ronson ( Aligator, New ) Paul Epworth (Save Us, Queenie Eye, Road) Ethan Johns ( Early Days, Turned Out, Hosanna) Giles Martin ( On My Way To Work, Appreciate, Everybody Out There, I Can Bet, Looking At Her, Get Me Out Of Here, Scared) Recording Chronology: January 2012: Paul begins work with Paul Epworth at Wolf Tone studios with the song 'Save Us' January -February 2012: Paul begins work with producer Ethan Johns. 'Hosanna' was in the first batch of songs and was recorded at Abbey Road studios. Further sessions will take place at Hog Hill Mill studio between now and October 2012. January /February - mid July 2012: Paul working with Mark Ronson, initially at Hog Hill Mill studio and later at Avatar studios,New York. During second week of May 2012 Mark Ronson refers to working with Paul in a studio 'a few months ago' for a couple of days. On 16th July 2012 two stories emerge that Mark and Paul were recently spotted in a New York studio. Second story implies that Paul & Mark had just that week gone into a studio to see what they can do. 16th February 2013: Paul is working at Hog Hill Mill with Giles Martin. March 2013: Paul and members of his live band recording at Air Lyndhurst Studios, London with producer Giles Martin on the songs 'On The Way To Work', 'Everybody Out There' & 'I Can Bet'. July 2013: Orchestral overdubs take place at Abbey Road studios, London. July 2013: Final overdubs and mixing take place at Henson studios in os Angeles. Can anyone help with additional info? Thanks

I think the first to leak was Ethan Johns revealing he recorded Hosanna. Was that in February? I think he said at the time they were going to hook up for another session in "3 weeks." I can't recall any news re: the sessions prior to that. Good thread. I'm interested to know more about the sessions and the timelines too.

Ethan Johns sessions started in February 2012, right.

Thanks guys for your interest and info. I've edited the time-line accordingly. Incidentally,I've just found out that Wolf Tone studio is Paul Epworth's studio in Beethoven Street, in the Queen's Park/ West Kilburn area of London.

In the NEW booklet Paul says that the first producer he approached was EPWORTH. So could be that back in January 2012 he started recording with him. Also in February 2012 Ronson talked about his work with Paul. For sure in March 2013 Paul was recording at AIR. I was in London at the time. It's a puzzling thing.

I would really like to thank Kestrel for this thread. The reason why I looked this up is because when i heard 'New' this morning, i was absolutely convinced certain songs, particularly 'Save Us', was recorded for Off The Ground. His voice sounds younger on some songs like he sang them 20 years ago compared to others on 'New'. In fact, i still stand by it. That vocal is from 1993, I'm sure. Others- like the title track, sound like he recorded them recently. But no way for 'Save Us'. His voice sounds way much younger.

I don't get it, why from 93?? Do you think you know Paul's voice that well from each album that you can judge when he recorded the vocal? Lol nah, it's just called echo and a flattering key, just my opinion.

Did you see/hear Paul do Save Us in Times Square, etc. (live) Sounds just like the record. Why don't you submit that as a question to Paul for the Q&A with Bang & Olufsen?

I think the vocals all sound consistent in terms of when they were recorded. In my opinion , his vocals are great throughout - so chuffed. So keys are more demanding than others, and some tracks were done more "off the cuff" like the Ethan Johns Stuff.

Thanks Luca for the additional info which I've edited in. Its beginning to look that Paul spent the first few months of this year working at Hog Hill with Giles Martin, recording new material and overdubbing on songs recorded last year with the other producers. This would explain Giles Martin's credit for 'additional production'. By March this year and the strings overdubs (nearly always one of the final aspects of recording an album) at AIR the album was no doubt near completion.

If I'm not wrong back in July or August Paul and the band were in Los Angeles to add something to the tracks. There was an article about George Martin coming to Abbey Road Studios visiting Giles in July 2013.

Having now received my copy of the album and having read Paul's notes and the recording credits its become obvious that several of my initial assumptions are clearly incorrect. Nothing 'new' there then? So i'll just need to re-jig the time-line again and we'll take it from there.

                                        Luca:

If I'm not wrong back in July or August Paul and the band were in Los Angeles to add something to the tracks.

Thanks for that as it fits in nicely with Paul's cd notes of working at Henson Studios in LA where he was overdubbing, writing and recording new material and overseeing the final mixes.

Thanks for putting this together, Kestrel. Great idea! On a technical note, I should say that it's Hog Hill Mill, not just Hog Hill.

Good spot, I'll get that amended. Just spotted myself that in Paul's cd 'open letter' he states that 'On My Way To Work' was recorded at Air Lyndhurst although the recording credits in the cd booklet state that the song was recorded at Hog Hill Mill, Abbey Road studios and Henson recording studios. Arghhhhhhhhhhh.....
