I'm new here. I just hope the incredible story I'd really like to share with you will be posted in the right place here : In 2005, I found the following in Hard Rock Cafe website (Key West, Florida) : Telegram dated 10/21/69 sent by Jimi Hendrix to Paul McCartney. The message reads, "We are recording an LP together this weekend in NY. How about coming in to play bass? peace, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Tony Williams." Today, still looking for a shot of this amazing document, I just found the telegram is on display in Hard Rock Cafe Prague (Czech Republic) accompanied by a response from Peter Brown saying Paul is away on holiday for two weeks !! Thanks to Hard Rock Cafe Paris, few days ago I received the photo (with Brown's answer) : Alan Douglas (who controled Hendrix legacy from 1973 to 1994) never talked about it and no media ever talked about this document (which is a cable in fact, not a telegram). I talked to Alan but he doesn"t remember, he only said this McCartney idea is vaguely in his memory. I really think Sir Paul McCartney never heard about this information, even forty three years later !! Of course, I may be wrong. I tried to inform the Hendrix fans and I thought the McCartney fans should be also informed ! For sure, I'd like to know what Paul McCartney would think if he really has no idea about this 1969 special request ! Do not hesitate to give me your thoughts about all this ! Thanks Stay tuned YM ps : sorry if some fans here already knew this Hard Rock Cafe telegram for years as I did not check all the posts before writing my message...

Yes, of course ! "Foxy Lady", at least the first chords. Great ! My many contacts always keep me informed when things like that happen ! I know about the anecdotes Paul tells onstage regarding Eric Clapton guitar tuning request by Jimi or, of course, the live cover at Saville Theater of "Sgt Pepper" 3 days after the release of the album... I always thought Paul's guitar style on 'Taxman' had an influence on Jimi's playing.

This song was released just few days after Chas Chandler discovered Jimi in New York (at Café Wha?). YM

I was wondering the same. I would say sarcasm more than ironic, but either way, it made me laugh a lot.

I still do not know what the fans here at Maccaboard think of this amazing "telegram" from 1969 ! The Hendrix fans are quite excited about it even if we all know today it's nothing but a sweet fantasy !! It's very interesting to see elswhere reactions from french Beatles forums, Stones forum, guitars forums, etc. You may all already know the very unique photo of Paul & Jimi together but in case some of you never saw it, here it is. Sorry if it has been posted several times before... We have no credit for that shot. It's from February 13th, 1969 at the Mary Hopkin party for the release of her album, the first one signed on Apple Records. Now I just noticed the weird link with POST in all that story : - "Postcard" is the title of Mary Hopkin LP - the release party took place that same year (1969) at the Post Office Tower Restaurant in London !!! - if you look carefully at the so-called "telegram", you can see "Post Office Overseas Telegram" written in the orange down the sides ! Very amusing don't you think ?! YM

Probably - but in any regards, Paul's current nod to Jimmy Hendrix is more so due to Jimmy's performance (as well as his overall 'greatness) of Sgt Pepper only days after that album was released by the Beatles...at least according to Paul's side of the story

Yazid, I think the telegram is amazing, as I have wondered since I heard of Paul's admiration of Jimi why they never played together. Wouldn't that have been an amazing session? Paul's bass playing skills and Jimi's incredible guitar abilities in the same room? I'd be very curious as to why the two never got together to jam.

The main reason would be to say they were really too busy from each side ! But that's not a convincing answer ! Jimi was always jamming with everybody (any musician). He was never to refuse to jam ! We also know Paul and few others great english heroes were Jimi's best PR when he arrived in London but to have a situation where Paul would go onstage with Jimi Hendrix was something else I suppose. Too bad it never happened ! Someone from a french Beatles forum wrote that during summer 1970 Paul was thinking of Jimi Hendrix to be part of "RAM". The guy even wrote Eddie Klein confirmed Paul sent a letter to Jimi Hendrix !!! I never heard nothing about that. Is it true ???? Did Eddie Klein really said it ? Where ? In a book, at radio, to a magazine ?? Did Paul ever talk about this also or is it just another fake rumor ??? Sorry, too many questions ! YM

I'm a Jimi fan as well, so just the idea that these two might have had a chance to work together, or that either of them was thinking of arranging for that to happen is incredibly exciting.

I always wonder how real these sorts of reports are, as well. It would be nice to think that Paul returned the favor of requesting Jimi's services on an album, but I have to wonder how Jimi would have fit on Ram, which is such a non-electric album in many ways. Jimi on acoustic, maybe? Wouldn't that have been cool...

What's funny is that Paul has never (to my limited knowledge) been asked about collaborating with Jimi, even though the two were obviously friendly and had such a respect for each other's work. I can't imagine that no journalist thought about asking Paul this question before...anyone know if there is an answer straight from Paul's mouth?

I think Paul is very careful with journalists, and has in the past (maybe still?) given them a set of questions they're allowed to ask, and a set of topics they're not allowed to ask about. After 50 years in the business, I don't blame him for being wary. I'm wondering though, since this telegram is not new, why no one has picked up on this before...
