And now the time is near....

Given the drumbeat of criticism of Paul lately, I thought people would appreciate a positive column about Paul's solo work. In this case, it's a defense of Silly Love Songs. It's an excerpt from a new book coming out on the Beatles solo work, and this excerpt makes me think the writer of the book -- Still the Greatest: The Essential Songs of the Beatles' Solo Careers by Andrew Grant Jackson -- might actually be fair to Paul. It was published in Rolling Stone. Here's the link: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/book-excerpt-paul-mccartney-goes-from-eleanor-rigby-to-silly-love-songs-and-back-again-20120816 Anyone on Facebook should "like" this story and so encourage more of the same from Rolling Stone. Here's an excerpt:
So he told the critics to stuff it with the most sublime disco-tinged mini-symphony any supermarket shopper ever heard. Opening with the sound of an automated assembly line like a craftsman clocking in on autopilot, he turned his supple bass into the lead instrument and proved he still had his ear to the ground by serving up the sweetest strings and tastiest horns this side of Philadelphia. Whereas in the Sixties the Beatles studied Motown, now McCartney took his cue from the current kings of slick soul, producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, whose label Philadelphia International featured acts like The O'Jays, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes (with lead singer Teddy Pendergrass), Lou Rawls, The Three Degrees and Billy Paul. "You're all just pizza and fairy tales," Lennon once sneered at McCartney. But Lennon's final statement for five years was a cover album of rock and roll oldies, so he was, too.

i think you have hit the nail on the head there maccamad
Well thank you Lazy, it saddens me that it has come to this, it doesn't seem so long ago that if he was to do an event, he could at least pull it off, if not blow 'em away, now it really has become a Sinatra situation.

I'm friggin' crying when I write this stuff, I've loved the bloke since January 1963 and he's my hero. I became a veggie coz of Paul and Linda and it hurts like heel to say all this. I knew it would come to this point eventually, that he would grow older and that ther'd probably be a day when he drifted into retirement, but this stage of his career and the publicity after recent TV appearances are now closer to a complete character assassination and career annhilation, and we all know he's far too great for that sort of fate ....all we are doing is stating the obvious and suggesting ways around it because we love him. I knwo we're all entitled to our opinion and that there are going to be two sides to every story on the various parts of Macca's life and career, but surely it's plain as the nose on your face that he is in need of a makeover?

According to legend back in the 1960's when John was lazing in front of his four TV's with his feet on Cyn's back, eating pizza and dreaming of Joko there was a bloke outside in the wet and cold feverishly beavering away with his nose to the frets in the dim candlelight.....the bloke was one Paul McCartney esq. He eventually broke free of his servitude and became big in the 1970's with his very own world conquering band called Wings. He found it easy to cope with the fame and adulation because it was the second time he'd been the leader of an acclaimed band. John in the meantime toddled off into retirement and baked bread, life quickly became stale for John.

Bit of wallowing going on here. That's OK. I've been doing the same. But it's time to accept and move on. Read the Rolling Stone article I linked to about Silly Love Songs. It'll make you feel better: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/book-excerpt-paul-mccartney-goes-from-eleanor-rigby-to-silly-love-songs-and-back-again-20120816 We'll see in the months to come whether Paul is able to Sing the Changes in his own life. I hope so.

The last sentence sums it up oh so well: "Had the critics of 1976 known how much more music McCartney still had in him, they would have understood that you couldn't be heavy all the time."

Your disapproving words cast a bad light on Brits regarding the illustrious Paul Mc., a fellow countryman who should be rightfully cherished as a national treasure and one who is still working, creating and producing and not resting on his laurels. What a cynical envious lot many of you are, that's too bad. They're cheating themselves and depriving themselves culturally and musically. Those Brits of that mind set. It's pitiful and very sad.
You just don't get it

Peppy is right.... Love and peace.
My message got deleted, but I remember I said Love and peace in it, so Peppy must be me, right?

WixRocks!:
Will this suffice?
What the hell? When did Paul get cheerleaders? :
The problem with all this is that they will distract Paul and the band too.

None of this matters, years from now history will prove Paul McCartney's place in music history along side John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra, Brian Wilson, Ray Davies, Rodgers and Hart, Beethoven, Mozart, Elvis Presley, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, etc. These same people will be saying when Paul's no longer here how much they loved his music....
I totally agree with this, so sad that people start to talk about this issue. And we don't care how he sounds in the performances, hope he could come to China, he got so many fans here.
IF you can convince your fellow countrymen to start treating animals with decency and respect perhaps you will get perhaps your wish one day.
Here in Spain animals are not treated with respect and Paul plays here anyway. Actually, are animals are not treated with respect in any country... and neither people...

Actually Paul McCartney is a person and he's not treated with respect in the UK.

EXACTLY. I loved that sentence, too.

I think we need to move on and quickly. We've all offered our advice. Most of us are in agreement, things need to change but I don't think it's healthy to wallow any further.

I agree. A casualty of too much time between rock/pop albums.

Loose Heaven Paul's only got himself to blame, he should know by now not to leave us twiddling our thumbs for too long......that's when we can get up to all sorts of mischief and mayhem!

I think the best thing for Paul to do in the UK, at least, is lie low until the new album comes out. People have resuscitated themselves in Hollywood and music before (and from the majority of the UK fans, it sounds like Paul is at that place of needing to rise from the ashes over there), and Paul certainly has the capability.

I agree, i've just come off having a discussion on Skype about Paul's 5 year gap between a proper Paul pop/rock album, i think that in itself hasn't helped his standing as "living off past glories". Playing his Beatle hits to death hasn't helped much either, time he moved on from it all and started anew.

lazy: re. Paul and China: how do you explain Paul playing Mexico City, for example, which still has bullfights??
