Stefan - I think I've heard of the Pipettes - where are they from? What style of music do they play?
they`re from brighton; they are trying to come up with a contemporary version of early 60s-girl groups like the shangri-las or ronettes (john lennon would have loved them)! Another interesting thing about them. They are strictly ANTI-Beatles... not because they hate them (they don`t); but just to demonstrate that there can be brilliant retro-music without the overwhelming influence of the beatles; their melodies are breathtaking, and their lyrics are very funny; it`s a very female sense of humour, though. Most songs are about "losers" that are trying to be their boyfriends... In "One Night Stand" the chorus goes: "I don`t love you - I don`t want you - if you think that this is cruel then you should see what my friends do - I don`t love you - I don`t want you - leave me alone you`re just a one night stand!"... they sing it in their sweetest voices... Their album is so brilliant. 14 songs; each one a potential hit! The perfect summer-album (it will be out in a month!)... BTW; I know so much about them, cos I had a phoner with one of them just half an hour ago!
where can we get their album?
-
release date is august the 8th (I know I said july elsewhere, but I was wrong)... I think you`ll get it in any good record store once it`s out... right now you can listen to the Pipettes, if you visit their myspace-profile...
-
http://www.myspace.com/thepipettes http://www.thepipettes.co.uk/ I like how they have "Step inside, loves" in the first page of their website... anti-beatles you say? also,
but just to demonstrate that there can be brilliant retro-music without the overwhelming influence of the beatles
that's impossible they sound great though!

well I asked Rose from the pipettes about it, and her explanation made a lot of sense to me; and I`m one of the most fanatical beatle-fans in the world "Pull Shapes" is such a fantastic song!

I was gonna say! Amazing! I'll definitely get their album when it's out. Excellent recommendation, Stephan!

And these aren`t even the best songs from the LP! It`s quality all the way through, no fillers... almost like a "best of" rather than a debut !
-
A new feature for this thread... (Moondogs) Supernova-Charts! They will change each month depending on what (only hot and contemporary groups, no dinosaurs; sry Paul! ) I`m into at the moment... Supernova-Charts 06/06 1. The Pipettes 2. Belle And Sebastian 3. Adam Green 4. The Sounds 5. The Go!Team 6. Arcade Fire 7. The Strokes 8. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah 9. Danielson 10. Mystery Jets

I heard the album and it's amazing. I think I'll order it online on vinyl. I'm also thinking of ordering the Pull Shapes single in 3 different formats (CD, two limited 7 inch vinyls, one yellow one orange). And yeah the avatar is the best

good idea, maybe the other people on this thread can do the same (I hope the only contemporary limitation does not apply to all ) and we can take ideas from each other

yeah, good idea... and in the end of the year we`ll compile "the ultimate supernova charts of 2006".. each number one in the monthly charts gets 10 points, number 2 gets 9 points and so on, and in december we`ll count them all together! each member of the beuatiful people is allowed to compile their personal charts each month (but noone has to do it of course... it`s not a must )!

You should also look for the "Meet The Pipettes"-EP. It contains three tracks from the album PLUS two very good acoustic-versions of "Judy" and "Dirty Mind"! How did you get to hear the complete album, BTW ? I don`t think it`s out yet...

Let's say I have my connections too... The charts thing sounds very cool... I'll get around to it tonight. It will be very hard not to include the Beatles. Now I'm off to a pool party to groove with my girlfriends to some Pipettes!

In this exact moment: Totti vs Schwarzer (penalty)... 1:0 CONGRATULATIONS, Applescruff82!!!!!!!!

I wanted Australia to win so bad. =( Anyway, I don't know what's happenning but I keep finding retro-sounding bands on myspace. I luv my retro. Check The Indikation, if you haven't already: http://www.myspace.com/theindikation They are from Norway, maybe Svenn has heard of them. I love this underground sound! Also, The Fore: http://www.myspace.com/thefore I think they need some work with the vocals, but otherwise they have totally captured the Mersey sound!

Horror-week! Listening to ABBA helps! Hey, I've aways wanted to know kaleidoscope's name. Well, she is beautiful, and that's the most important thing I guess! Listening to some songs by the indikation. Very cool music. Never heard of them. Thanks for the link, kaleidoscope.
