http://abbeyroadontheriver.com/guestbook/view.php gary Jacob - cleve, OH +Louisville, KY, United States November 17, 2005 21:35pm Tuesday in Beverly Hills, I attended the Adopt A Minefield benefit hosted by Heather Mills McCartney, Jay Leno, Tony Bennett, and Sir Paul McCartney himself. My first observation is how few AROTR fans purchased raffle tickets in May in Louisville, and how fortunate that was for the people who did, and won. Quite simply, other than having a personal relationship with the McCartney?s, I am not sure there is any event available where you can be closer. Only 1,000 people attend the dinner gala. Guests included Alec Baldwin, Ray Romano, Pamela Anderson, Quincy Jones, Norman Lear, Christopher Cross, Amanda Peet, and many others I didn?t see. My dinner table was about 50 feet from Paul?s. Yes, he and Heather had dinner with the rest of us. At his table were Tony Bennett, the Leno?s, Quincy Jones, the President of Gibson Guitar, the head of AAMF, some UN folks, and others. Directly, next to my table were Paul?s band, Bill Bernstein, and their wives and friends. During dinner, Paul took time to visit with many people he clearly knew. Although, we did not meet (my fault, in retrospect), I did chat with some AAMF people at his table, and stood about 5 feet from him. When I tried to make my move, he was clearly engaged, and I didn?t want to be intrusive. Folowing dinner was an auction. If Paul had not performed 15 songs later in the evening, the auction alone would have been worth the 5-hour flight and $750.00 ticket. First off, the auction emceed by Jay Leno, in perfect form, and clearly enjoying his self began with the selling of Paul?s dinner plates. This raised $10,000. Then, after some miscellaneous art, trips and such, came a framed White Album signed by John, Paul, George, and Ringo and it sold for $85,000. Then Paul got into a bidding competition for a Tony Bennett painting. It was simply an amazing laugh out loud spectacle to observe as they bid the painting to $55,000, and Paul then graciously dropped out-he had done his job very well. As Jay Leno commented, ?maybe Tony should give up singing?. Remember the 20 Gibson Epiphone?s recreated in honor of the 40th anniversary of Ed Sullivan? Well, there was one left; it fetched $90,000. Alec Baldwin and Norman Lear were fighting for that one, and then some very unassuming woman outmaneuvered them both. Finally, Heather who during the evening narrated some very moving films about land mines offered her designer gown for auction. In one more of the evening?s many highlights, her husband bid $15,000 and as only a chivalrous Knight can, won the gown for his Lady. A wonderful moment, indeed. Did I say finally-almost. Then Jay Leno announced that General Motors had produced a one of a kind ?vegan? Cadillac in honor of Paul. No leather whatsoever. The car signed by Paul, Tony Bennett, and Jay Leno fetched $90,000. Paul and Heather both spoke at length about Land Mines, and bestowed honors on various victims and volunteers. They emotionally appealed to everyone to help. I will say that Heather Mills McCartney is a force of nature and an appealing instrument for good. Do not underestimate this woman. She has legacies of her own to fulfill, and with Paul?s ability to persuade, I fully expect her to become a large voice on a grander stage. Did I point out there was entertainment? Sometime around 10 the serious stuff slowed down and the music began. Tony Bennett, previously mentioned, opened the night with a splendid set of standards, most notably, ?I Left My Heart In San Francisco?, played to a well-deserved standing ovation. Paul and Tony are great friends, and on the occasion of Paul and Heather?s wedding, Tony apparently wrote a song for them, and surprised us all by inviting Paul onstage to duet with him. No lack of warmth or chemistry between them. Great moment. Rolling towards 11pm, Jay Leno finally said, ?Ladies and Gentleman, Paul McCartney?. Wearing his trademark red ?no more land mines? shirt with white dinner jacket, Paul and the band hit the stage, from where I sat a mere 10 feet, for a tremendous 60-minute set. Opening with Drive My Car, other Beatle songs covered were, Long and Winding Road, All My Lovin, Things We Said Today, Penny Lane, Get Back, I?ll Follow The Sun, Lady Madonna, and Let It Be. Some Little Richard, some English Tea,Chaos and Creation, and it was all nearly over. Great bows, lots of hugs and lingering on the stage, Jay Leno thanked us and sent us on our way. Too bad nobody wanted to leave. In the course of the night, I met many people who had heard of AROTR, and looked forward to someday attending. My table was mostly the L.A. based NBC/Today show news bureau, and I bet they make an effort to cover AROTR next year. All in all, I was so happy and proud we aligned with AAMF. It is such a worthy cause and the people involved in clearing these dangerous weapons of such destruction are not only brave, but too, noble. Paul uses his greatness and talents for peace, understanding, and in all cases is a great humanitarian. He is very distressed by the current state of affairs, and together with Heather will, I am sure, continue to raise awareness and speak out against WAR and how it kills civilians, not just soldiers, as surely they can. As they both so aptly put it. ?While our media obsesses over 8 summer shark attacks, tens of thousands of innocents all over the world lose arms and legs as they walk to the neighborhood school or corner grocery. Arms and legs lost because of weapons left behind long after the armies have done their damage. If there was but one land mine on American soil, we would perhaps better understand. How cruel and ironic that the USA, specifically the Bush administration, will not ratify the Land Mine Treaty?? In closing, Paul was fighting a cold and the strain of the current tour. His voice was a tad hoarse; I thought he was not feeling his best. Yet, he never once wavered or even mentioned it. I remember when a teammate of the great Joe Dimaggio asked him, why he played so hard even when the game was already lost or won, he said, ?because these people work hard and came to see me at my very best, and that?s what they will get.? Watching Paul Tuesday night I realized how hard he works and how much he cares for the people who have supported his amazing career. That?s all.
