Star Trek

Well, it's plain to see that Star Trek is visionary about the future, like in technology, you can see all the cell phones, Ipads, etc filmed decades before they we were invented. But the funny thing is the series was an inspiration. The creator of cell phone is Martin Cooper working for Motorola and he had the idea watching an Star Trek chapter with Kirk talking using the "communicators" they had and Cooper thought "I want one like that" and started developing it. And through the years the new cell phones look more like the Star Trek ones. Pretty much like if technology imitates Star Trek. It happens also with lots of things like Ipads, laptops, androids similar to Data who also got the looks of his builder, the project of traveling faster than the speed of light called WARP, just like in Star Trek. I think it's funny.

I've just seen the last episode of The Next Generation, and Q says something to Picard that kind of sums Star Trek. Something like "it's not about exploring the stars and making maps but about humanity expanding their minds" It's a philosophical TV show not a sci-fi one. I've read an interview to JJ Abrams (director of the last 2 Star Trek movies and of the future Star Wars movies) saying that Star Trek typical thing are his moral, intelectual, philosophical topics. Well... Season 7 1 All Good Things (Double episode) 2 Thine Own Self 3 Descent (2 parts, Season 6 and Season 7) 4 Emergence 5 Liaisons 6 Attached 7 Interface

And here I come again, as I did with The Original Series, with the very best episodes of the whole The Next Generation Series Top 10 1 The Best Of Both Worlds 2 Encounter at Farpoint 3 Hide in Q 4 Ship In A Bottle 5 All Good Things 6 Transfigurations 7 Q Who 8 Future Imperfect 9 Tapestry 10 The Royale I think the saying in English would be something like "Star Trek shit does stink too", so a mention to the worst episodes I can remember... The Child Shades of Grey Final Mission Galaxy's Child Aquiel

I haven't seen... yet! the new ST movie. But the reviews say that it's the typical ST thing of setting some events in the future and in the space but quite similar of what is happening here on Earth in the present. That was used since the start of ST to avoid censorship, so they could do a chapter about any topic, cause it was kind of a fantasy world but they often were about the most controversial topics of the moment. Roddenberry introduced ST to the TV company as a "Space western" cause western were in those days, but then what he did had nothing to do with it. His idea was to put a women as first officer, and she was more intelligent that the captain, that was censored... (even by the women who could decide about that, Roddenberry said). They opposed that it was a "multi-racial crew"... in the end Roddenberry surrender in some things like women wearing mini-skirts and the first officer not being a woman (in the end it was an alien...). But he did put a woman on the crew AND... she was black. When black actresses didn't appear on TV series then, they say. And she was an officer. And then a Russian (Russia, the big enemy...) joined the crew... etc. Also ST features the first "Interracial kiss" on TV, Kirk kissing Uhura... and that was extremely controversial then. The executives didn't want it to happen but Roddenberry and William Shatner managed to do it anyway. The story about it is quite funny... Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) on filming the first interracial kiss on television
you know, "where no one has gone before" Discovery TV, short video about it -

There were a couple of those--which one was this?

The one where the jet pilot was beamed on board but had to be sent back to earth because his son to be would someday lead a mission to Saturn.

What puzzles me in Star Trek's time travels is that they kind of support both theories at the same time, the one that says that there are multiple timelines (like in Back To The Future movie) and the ones that say that there's only one possible timeline so past can't be changed (like in Time's Arrow...) Btw, in Star Trek's facebook, they're running a poll about the favourite episodes of the Original Series The City on The Edge of Forever is leading then the Tribbles are 2nd. http://www.cbs.com/shows/star_trek/fan-favorites??ttag=mktg_st_fanvote_soc_7.12 and btw... I'm finding Voyager quite dissapointing... I'm watching Season 2 and it just don't get much interesting...

City On The Edge Of Forever is my favorite--It was Gene Roddenberry's too. I also love Amok Time and This Side Of Paradise (also the one where Kirk loses his memory and ends up marrying the Indian woman--"I bear your child!")

That one is "The Paradise Syndrome". It seems they're planning to release the 10 more voted episodes.

I love the original Time Machine movie and the new version that came out a few years ago. I wonder how much Star Trek was influenced by the original movie?

I haven't seen the original but I saw the new version, well one thing seems to be sure, Star Trek has influenced way more that how much has been influenced. Virtually all the great sci-fi movies after the 60s are about a topic already on a Star Trek episode...
