I didn't know if a thread on this British telly series (shown on PBS Masterpiece Theater here) already exists. I saw "Downton Abbey" for the first time the other night, and now understand what the fuss is all about. It's engrossing and so much happened. Lady Sybil ran off with the chauffer to Dublin to be a nurse and he a journalist, her father the lord of the manor developed an infatuation with a maid and kissed her several times and she resigned, Spanish flu outbreak happened at the manor and a major player in the story unexpectedly died, a servant showed up with Charlie's baby, a young man wounded in the war started walking again, he and Lady Mary although in love dramatically renounced each other, and more. Elizabeth McGovern plays the lady of the manor. She's American of course, and sounds American in this. I wonder if she's supposed to be an American expatriate who married the British aristocrat and became a "Lady." Carston the head butler is quite touching. Another male servant married a maid there and later was arrested for murder, but you feel he is innocent. I read that Shirley MacLaine is going to join the cast.

It's good viewing and I'm glad you like it but as a historian Suzy it's about as close to reality as I am to Jennifer Aniston's underwear drawer. Having worked on country house exhibitions connected with masters and servants there is no way that the upstairs lot would have fraternised with the hoi palloi, unwashed types downstairs and there is no way said servants would have been allowed to behave the way they do in reality. Walking in on situations without knocking, answering back blah blah. It's great TV and is hugely popular, but can be classed as historical soap rather than a period drama. Dame Shirl is gonna kick butt somewhat apparently but she's up against Maggie Smith.....I think introducing Lord Voldermort would stir it up a treat...

That man who plays the Lord of the Manor is quite attractive, in a subtle way The "blue blooded" character who enjoyed a short fling with one of the maids while his daughter was fixing to run off with their driver. The maid resigned, and the aristocrat Lord Downton or whatever his name is, smiled as he watched her depart; an enigmatic smile signifying--what? That he was glad because now they could more safely meet somewhere in another location? Or gratified that his ego had been stroked-- she returned his attentions and affections... Why didn't he look sad to see her go? What do you think? Been puzzling over that little mystery.

Yeah, they didn't do the deed, so I wondered also why the big smile. I think you nailed it with the stroked ego. She was quite a bit younger...

Will Shirley MacLaine playing Lady Crawley's American mother, Martha Levinson, be a big plus for the show? Will it be too difficult to forget this is Shirley MacLaine? Especially when she displays her own bossy boastful opinionated verbally aggressive nature in the preview clip I saw of Martha greeting the Downton Abbey residents lined up to meet her upon her arrival. The character sounded like Shirley talking. Her personality. Didn't it?

Love this series... Finishing watching the boxed set Wanted to mention Season 3 seems to be available on the Amazon.com.uk if you can't wait until January... or check HMV in the UK, they seem to have great sales on DVDs after a short while! Just make sure your player is multi regional. They are Region 2. In the US we are Region 1. Some laptops require you to change your region, and then you can only change it 4 or 5 times. I found out the hard way...

Excellent series! I just finished watching series 3. It isn't out in the States till January, but my dvd player plays PAL so I got the UK edition which came out a few weeks ago. What I was wondering is "In the UK will there be a Christmas show, like there was last year?" The third series didn't have much of an ending, expected some kind of cliffhanger. Podgie (I am hooked on this show) Monkey

PBS showed some Downton Abbey reruns this weekend. I wondered if Lady Mary's fiance she planned to dump came out and told on her for revenge after she ended things with him, which she feared. Revealing the Turkish diplomat died in her bed. Mary's father thought she would have to go to America and stay with her American grandmother while the ensuing scandal raged. Wondered if that happened, or if all this is yet to enfold in the new season to begin in January.
