I will never understand the fascination with The Royal Family. What exactly makes them "royal" other than the fluke of birth anyway? Despite all the real news going out there, all the news networks devoted a ridiculous amount of coverage as if it were an international tragedy.

The cheapskate has even given her his dead mothers engagement ring, rather than coughing up the readies for a new one. Oh well, i shouldn't scoff, at least thats saved the British tax payer a few grand i guess.

The absurdity around the fawning over this "family" has always made me channel into my inner-Johnny Lydon.

thank you Sir Steven for your kind thoughts on this wonderful news. their is something about being of Royal Blood. graciousness, Beauty and dignity and service to country is what this Royal thing is all about. the "Real Royalty". this is what Lady Diana was all about! this is what Prince William is also all about! service to country, with Graciousness, and Beauty. wile serving with Humility! Lady Dianna would have made the Best ever Queen of England, but it was not to be! sadly and may I say to coming up: the British Knights and all of this gossip you speak about, is Not what the Sir Knights of England do! they have better things to consider about the conditions of the world, they make Peace and Harmony and consider love and healing to the Planet! the Knight you were speaking of was one as Paul! so please be kind!

Congratulations to Prince William and Kate getting engaged! It is too bad Princess Diana is not here to see it, but I am sure she knows. She was a kind, and gracious human being. Prince Harry I think is even more compassionate as he matures. He does all kinds of charity work, and he looks like he really enjoys it, like Diana in a way. Plus I think Prince Harry is the most handsome prince, so I am biased.

I'll add my congratulations to the young couple. It's not their fault that accidents of birth makes this the most significant marriage-to-be in recent royal history. Such a burden of responsibility to rest on such young shoulders. And to have their comings and goings examined under the spotlight of the world and international media makes it doubly more so. We can do with some light-hearted excitement at these troubled times and this event will lift the spirits of many millions even if just for the weeks and days up to the formal ceremony. We are hoping that in due course the UK Government will declare a formal public bank holiday to mark the occasion. I'm particularly entertained by the speed at which media and manufacturers will leap upon this announcement with "Product". Most have forecast and planned for this day so expect Newspaper specials, TV documentaries in very short order, and commemorative souvenir plates, mugs etc to mark the engagement within a week. All good news for UK manufacurers - the uplift in the economy with such extras and associated wedding day celebrations and tourism should far outweigh any related costs. All of which takes me back to my initial thoughts of goodwill to the young couple caught in the eye of this hurricane. Martin

Yes, it is kind of fun and uplifting, Martin I'd read recently about Prince William's and Prince Harry's many charity efforts, taking after and somewhat inspired by their later mum Diana if not inspired by her to a huge extent remembering all her intimate talks to them about caring about humanity, etc. and trying to help out, and "to those whom much is given, much is expected in return," etc. Prince Charles has embued them with that spirit also, and it's nice to think they'd be like that anyway. They're not so young and foolish as to be unaware of their special exalted positions. They're not so young and dumb that they take it all for granted. I found it right inspiring to discover their many charities the princes are involved with, and some they started themselves, etc. I hope Kate Middleton will be genuinely altruistic like her fiance. She seems appealing in many ways, and a worthy match for Wills. I saw pictures of old flames and passing fancies of William's, and Kate is more attractive than most of them, and seems just as nice, or nicer. Also she seems to really love him. She's hung in there for a decade through ups and down, media annoyances, break ups and make ups, etc.-- and now is payback time, her reward of finally "getting her man" in the big serious permanent way she desired. Middleton's not been daunted by the overwhelming prospect of becoming Queen of England, either. And apparently there's no "Camilla" lurking to mess things up for her!

The Daily Mail managed 31 pages overnight - 15 pages in the paper itself and a 16 page special pull-out. They seem to have won the initial battle of the newspapers..... Martin

LOVE that Prince William proposed with his mother's engagement ring, telling us that this is his way of making sure that his mother didn't miss out on the day...very sweet!

They're all going to harp on it...always on the lookout for a big story, then they run it into the ground 'til you're sick of it, lots of the time, but this at least is a happy occasion and not some major catastrophe... I wonder if Kate M. sometimes secretly hates being referred to as a "commoner" :
