Doctor Who

Looks like another great season. I liked the first episode, although I do miss Rose. Kind of a surprise who won "The Weakest Link" last week. I thought the person who won should have been booted in an earlier round. What am I hearing about a Dr Who cartoon? Podgie (trying to keep up) Monkey

The Dr Who cartoon series is part of a side show called Totally Dr Who shown on BBC - it's a "behind the scenes" gossip and interview show aimed at children. http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/totally/ The cartoon is screened as part of that in episodes called Dr Who Infinite Quest -it's drawn a la comic book style with limited animation. You can see a few stills from that on the link above. There's also a more adult "behind the scenes" show called Dr Who Confidential http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/confidential/ or for teasers just visit the whole BBC homepage for the show: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/ Martin

Tonights episode was fantastic....about Shakespeare, London and the Globe Theatre in 1599 and witches, and really well written, clever and funny....I know it's only the 2nd episode but this series is the best yet....in fact it's getting better....let's hope it stays that way.

The cartoon was better than I thought, the animation was very good. Wish they made it into a regular show of it's own. It seemed very short, only a few minutes long. Totally Who is pretty cool. I like seeing the set, and some of the special effects (Don't try this at home). I am psyched to see Willy Shakespeare, the next episode sounds like it will be a great one. Reflecting on Dr Who episode 2. I love the mixing up of old history and time travel fantasy. Without givng any of the plot line away - for this name is used in the trailer - it centres on the performance of a "lost" Shakespearean play "Love's labour's wonne" a presumed sequel to Love's Labours Lost. Historian's have known of this play title for years, for it's listed in 15C documents, but it's script has never been found - one of the premises debated is if this title is an alternate title for another of the Comedies - but, if so, which for many of the known Comedies are listed alongside "Love's labour's wonne". The Doctor and Martha supposedly meet Shakespeare at a time when some of his greatest work is yet to be written so we keep hearing just snippets of future works in formation, or the Doctor and Martha feeding him partial comments that may become those great lines. Full marks for an episode that had creative writing designed to tease the adult literary palate as well as drive the kids back behind the sofa in fear. Martin

I don't watch TV here in America, except for Dr. Phil because I think he gives good kicks in the butt to 'family' members who need such. But my friend from Canada said that he only watches TV programs from 'cross the pond. (He is a wonderful writer himself, so I respect his opinion). Recently, I signed up for cable TV here, and still, I am not seeing any British shows. So I'm wondering what one here in the states must subscribe to, to view these charming & witty British TV shows, which some rave about?

Another thing teasingly developing in this series is the "frisson" developing in Martha as she contemplates her relationship with The Doctor. Whilst the episode has flirting between Martha and William Shakespeare it's clear that she finds The Doctor attractive and is willing to contemplate closer intimacy. There are long established "rules of engagement" between the Doctor and female assistants and I don't doubt they will be observed in this early evening family show but it all adds spice (I'm just reflecting here on the late night, Dr Who spin off, Torchwood - apparently due to be screened in the US soon - where such interpersonal "rules of engagement" do not apply - if you haven't been following our discussions on Torchwood - be warned ) Martin

Depending on your cable system, your best bet (if available) is BBC America. Failing that, you might be able to rely on your local PBS station for some quality British programming.

I liked the story, but the only thing I had a problem with was the way Martha was dressed. Like Rose had to change when they met Queen Victoria, Martha should have changed going back into Shakespeares time. People would have been staring at them, just the way they were dressed, yet it made it seem like they fitted right in and noone even noticed. Martha's tattoo would have been a site back in those days, but I think she mostly had the short leather jacket on. I did like the story though. Podgie (out of place himself) Monkey

Doctor Who and the Beatles A clip from the 1965 episode 'The Chase' where the Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Vicki watch the Beatles play 'Ticket to Ride' on the Time/Space Visualiser. The original idea for the Beatles segment was to depict the band performing at a fiftieth-anniversary concert, with the Fab Four dressed up as old men. It appears that the musicians themselves were interested in the proposition, but it was vetoed by their manager, Brian Epstein. Subsequently, it was thought that an appearance by the Beatles on Top Of The Pops might be used instead, but no footage was available as most editions of the programme were destroyed after broadcast. A November 1964 recording of "I Feel Fine" was then considered. In the event, however, footage of the band performing "Ticket To Ride" at Riverside Studios on April 10th was made available to Martin's team. The Beatles had a guest appearance on Doctor Who in 1965 -- singing "Ticket to Ride." Afterwards, a traveller from the future remarks that she's heard of the Beatles, having visited their memorial in Liverpool, but that she didn't realize that the Beatles also performed "classical music." This is black-and-white Doctor Who comedy gold. The original recording of that particular Beatles performance has been lost along with a lot of the BBC library which was tragically thrown out in a great video tape purge in the 1970s. That Doctor Who footage is now the only visual record of that performance.

do you think this will be Tennants last series
-
Well this is the wikipedia summary of all the latest conflicting gossip:
Tennant has confirmed that he will continue to play the Tenth Doctor at least into the revived programme's third series in 2007,[3] and the Sun has reported that he has also signed for the fourth (200 series, "in a £1 million deal", although the same paper has also reported that he will leave halfway through the fourth series.[4] The BBC has denied this[5] while the Daily Mirror has reported (citing unidentified sources) that Tennant has signed to appear for the complete fourth series.[6]

I think they are trying their best to be tight lipped about this as series one was partly ruined by that fact that when episode 2 came along we already knew that Christopher Eccleston was leaving.

I thought this weeks episode was great! Gridlock! The Doctor saves the day, and learns a secret. Podgie (New New New New New New York) Monkey
