Capaldi is a seasoned actor as well as a writer and director. He is an Oscar winner for Best Short Film, Live Action, Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life, which he wrote and directed. I have not yet seen World War Z, but I understand he appears in this film and has the role of King Kinloch in the forthcoming film, Maleficent. We are familiar with Capaldi in his role as Caecilius in the Doctor Who episode, The Fires of Pompeii, also as Randall Brown in the TV series, The Hour, and as John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of the Earth. He has also appeared in Dangerous Liaisons and Bean. Have you ever seen the made for TV film, John and Yoko: A Love Story? Capaldi portrayed George Harrison in that film.

Broad canvas indeed. Better known in the UK for his role as Malcolm Tucker in the post watershed BBC2 political comedy satire series The Thick of It, and its follow-up film In the Loop. That role was the only thing that might have stopped the appointment as his character Malcolm Tucker was not the best of life role models: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Thick_of_It#Cast_and_characters and his appointment as Doctor Who will surely attract younger viewers to view that series. Award winning comedy at all levels but Peter's character is nasty to the extreme. However his potential and presentation of The Doctor is as yet untested and I await seeing him build that character with interest, the Doctor Who team rarely slip up and I trust their judgement here. Yes, but I don't remember him. I still think he's too old for the part. Well, no one can replace David Tennant for me! Matt Smith kind of grew on me a bit, though.

He`s a brilliant actor. He most certainly is not too old - I`m pleased to see that the BBC are not pandering to the youth market for once.( Anyway, he also happens to be extremely good looking). Dr Who has been around for a long, long time. It`s hilarious to suggest that someone is too old - I guess you never saw Patrick Troughton, William Hartell or John Pertwee! It`s only in recent years they have been going for the young(ish) and good-looking types.

Sorry, but I never watched any of the other Doctors (I don't think they showed Doctor Who where I lived in Ohio), just Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith. I like the younger doctors and PC at 55 is too old for my taste. As many have often said on this forum, I'm entitled to my opinion.

The BBC are screening their recording of The Doctor Who Prom on the August Bank Holiday Monday 26th at 16.00 hrs on BBC One: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0394dg0 Martin

Watched the Doctor Who Prom.. While the live appearances of the stars and the usual baddies frightening the audience is as delightful as ever the star remains the music. There are some very powerful emotional themes running through the series and, when presented alongside clips from the related episodes, the music stands head and shoulders above the other elements of the show. I found it very cathartic for a variety of reasons and for once was pleased to be watching it alone. I will line the family up to share it later though. Plenty of teasing from Matt Smith about how the series to date lines up the 50th Anniversary special in November. Always waiting for more... Martin

BBC announcement about the raft of programming to mark the 50th anniversary: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24038234
A 75-minute special episode called The Day Of The Doctor will star the soon-to-leave Matt Smith and David Tennant.
Looking forward to Professor Brian Cox's special:
Other highlights include a BBC Two lecture by Professor Brian Cox on the science behind the hit show and the drama An Adventure In Space and Time, written by Mark Gatiss. The one-off programme stars David Bradley - known to millions for his role as Filch in the Harry Potter films - as William Hartnell, who played the first Doctor in 1963.
Does America know Professor Brian Cox yet? He's a very talented TV-oriented scientist/astronomer/ presenter. Loads more in the article visit it and have a read. Martin

The only Brian Cox I know is an actor who played William Stryker in a couple X-Men movies.
-
Brian Cox's popularity may be in part because, for his ability, knowledge and experience he's young and bit of a looker - helps viewers engage with his presentations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Cox_%28physicist%29 Martin

Just watched the 2012 episode about the planet asylum. Excellent! The female actors were brilliant and incredibly beautiful indeed!

Just checked for a local 3D screening of this Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Episode. Thought I'd have left it too late, but no! 3 tickets for wife, son and I in reasonable seats - I got shown a seating plan and was allowed to select. Three seats back row in central position - don't like viewing 3D from the side. Suppose we'll have to make a night of it with a meal as well And when we get home my YouView Box will have captured the episode for an instant reply - albeit only in 2D. Screening is synchronous with the BBC Broadcast -as it is worldwide.... Martin
