The Sun, the Moon, and the Stars

This is one of my art attempts in the mid 70's. In the lower right hand corner is a meteor as described by a friend who claimed he saw it. He said that it looked just like it...and wanted to know how I knew that. ...mainly the bright greenish glow of the meteor and the orangish tail
Very, very nice! Is that on a canvas? or maybe a sheet??
This is around 5' feet by 5' and was on a heavy cloth like material...I used these tubes of paint that had roller ball points on them like a ballpoint pen. 3 of my friends and my girlfriend of the time helped me fill in the blue space background. You can tell the differences in styles they used if you look real close
I'm quite impressed ... have you kept up on artwork?

^ With my 3 day weekend coming up...I will try to get some of my doodles together and put them in the "What's That You're Doing?" location. "That Sun!" is a comment a female friend said one time about the poster. My avatar is a little doodle that I did in my bitmap paint computer program.

Just watched this Documentary on The Russian Meteor.

Just watched this Documentary on The Russian Meteor.
Amazing! Thanks a lot for that...I had almost forgotten that they were tracking a separate large (and news worthy) meteor that made a close pass the prior evening....I tried to see that one as it supposedly could be visible in very dark areas...(I think they said the speed at which we could see it travelling would be something like 5 minutes for the distance equivalent as the width of the disk of the moon from our perspective)...So, while my mind's calculator is currently turned off, I'm pretty sure that means it took quite a while to cross the entire celestial sphere
-
^ If it crossed the face of the moon (2,160 miles) at a right angle to our view in 5 minutes, then it would be travelling at the rate of 12 times that many miles in one hour...or, 25,920 miles per hour. Which sounds reasonable, as they said that the Russian meteor came in at over 44,000 mph.

If you live in the northern tier states here in the US, take a peek at the sky tonight and tomorrow night...and you may be rewarded with a view of the northern lights...supposedly a big solar flare shot off the sun the other day and will create better conditions for auroras to show up further south than usual

Actually it was cloudy last night...tonight, I'm trying to get my daughter to take a ride with me out to the beach...from what I understand (at this latitude), we need to have a good view of the northern horizon...and even then it's a crap shoot...will post if we make it out there...Oobu over in Chicago land should try to find a spot on the lake somewhere north of the city

Yes indeed it would, know anyone I could commission?

These are absolutely stunning - at one time, several years ago, we were considering actually taking a trip to Churchill, Ont (along the southern part of Hudson Bay) just to see the lights. They dub themselves the northern lights capital of the world...they also have other wonderful highlights of nature - polar bears (although I think it wouldn't be the right time of year to see them at a point where we'd consider going) as well as beluga whales (and their close relatives, narwhals)
-
^ There are so many shapes and forms to northern lights it is amazing! My oldest daughter and 3 oldest grandkids went to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for a week vacation last year at this time. On a small boat, they got within 50ft. of several humpback whales! Speaking of light phenomenon in the night sky... Here is a photo from Finland of light pillars over a nearby parking lot. When temperatures and humidity are just right, flat ice crystals can form and create a crystal fog that reflects light back up into the sky. It makes for quite a visual display! http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1312/lightpillars_kast_960.jpg

That is really cool, thanks for posting that! I've never seen that phenomenon. I was on a plane once during the night time. The flight attendant told me to look out my window and there were Green lights from an Aurora Borealis, as far as you could see.... It was really cool how they just dance up and down, very mesmerizing! It lasted for about 15-20 min and I figure the plane must have been going at least 500MPH. That was a really long Aurora Borealis !!

^ I had an interesting 'aerial' phenomenon experience at work yesterday. I suddenly heard dozens of geese honking! I got out of my work tractor and stood on the back and watched a conglomeration of several V-shaped formations of geese fly overhead at about 150 ft. up. (very low) They were flying from east to west. The whole flock stretched out for about 3 blocks north to south and was about a block long east to west. It was loud and phenomenal. I was waiting for the little 'droplets'...but, thankfully there were none! There were literally 100's of them!

I've known a few artists who could do it...but, haven't talked to them in ages. I was studying that photo the other night...the incredibly detailed trees perfectly represent their dark winter setting and the aurora looks like a colorful mystical nightngale bringing light to the deep winter landscape. It would make a magical painting indeed!
