Olympus Mons is on the opposite side of Mars as the impact crater. I think that 3 mile tall "Pyramid" could be an asteroid that landed on Ceres instead of impacting at high velocity. I will try to find that Mars relief link that I had,
I found this, am trying to place Olympus Mons... I thought it was a classic shield volcano? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d9/Mars_Global_Topo_PIA02035.jpg
Just found this at the MOLA site. That Blue indentation on the right in the lower photo is opposite the Olympus Mons terrain on the left. http://mola.gsfc.nasa.gov/images/topo_labeled.jpg
That's pretty deep! I can see that... There was an atmosphere at one time wasn't there? Just saw that they found an aurora
-
I had heard that Mars had some sort of atmosphere at one time, but was blown away by a catastrophic event. This could have been the one.

I'm sure it was!! I'm watching too many of those shows showing how that could happen to Earth...solar flares, asteroid strikes...the seed bank. It seems to me that we've been having some really colorful sunsets... purple and red and on some of the last flights I've taken, the oceans have been completely cloud covered, more than I remember any other times. Also the incidence of auroras coming further south and all of the methane we keep loading into our atmosphere!! I really wish that people were more cognizant of our atmosphere and our magnetic field and how we need to protect it, wouldn't like to wind up like Mars!!

I have been watching these two stars get closer and found out they are Venus and Jupiter. They are getting closer as double stars. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2015/06/150629-spot-venus-jupiter-conjunction-sky/ Have fun watching the stars!

Kittay thanks for posting that! I almost forgot!! It's in the western sky tonight at sundown! It's so overcast tho...
-
Kittay my friend waited for an hour last night until the skies opened up for about 1 minute, to get this shot! https://scontent-lga1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/t31.0-8/11402886_10155978356095001_3995417132548051816_o.jpg You will still be able to see it, in the upcoming days as they move slowly apart...

Wow! Just a beautiful photo! I love the marina too. Fab fotie!

Venus and Jupiter are supposed to conjoin here tonight and appear as one.. If anyone didn't know, there have been over a hundred wildfires burning in Canada that have been sending smoke down into the states. This probably explains some of the colorful sunsets. I remember when Mt. St. Helens erupted in the 80's, you could see a purplish haze in the sky for a few days after the event. I was waiting for Jimi Hendrix music to start playing.

Our full moon this month for July is called the "Buck Moon" Cool pic L2T! Can't wait until New Horizons starts sending us pics from Pluto, too!!!
-
Heard last night that some pics are starting to be sent back as the probe approaches Pluto.

As long as the probe doesn't approach Uranus...you're safe!

Things change. It's inevitable. New technologies and discoveries are always going to move faster than older people can keep up. When I was young, I could do anything on a computer. Now I'm lucky if I know how to turn it on. But I never thought we'd have fewer planets than we used to.
-
At around 500 miles in diameter, a celestial object will turn "round". When it does, it is a planetoid/planet. Pluto will always be a planet to me. There are even a few more that should be added to the roster in our solar system.

***NEWS FLASH*** Aliens have mysteriously turned off the computer of NASA's New Horizons Scacecraft which was slated to photograph Pluto. NASA is scrambling to turn it back on after its 3 million mile, 9 year journey....

Here's a current official explanation of what's been going on. It was a little computer overload problem when we sent to much info at one time. It's ok now. Check @ 2:55

Thanks for posting that ! Was watching commercials for it all week, was bummed to hear about it. I hope they have some info on the moons and Charon too. Just recently heard about a probe that landed in a crater crookedly and didn't get sun on its solar panels. It finally turned itself on for a bit. Maybe it was on an asteroid the had a strange object on it?
