This year, I planted ornamental kale & cabbage in planters. The squirrels are leaving them alone! The one I planted last year is very slow in re-growth. Now the ground is frozen solid, so no more planting til spring.
-
no leaves on the bush now
-
need the bush back as its now cold nights
-
Going to bring last year's amaryllis in & start watering it & see if it re-blooms this year.
-
Outside is covered in snow now, but I have pepper plants blooming in a sun room! Thank goodness for house plants. I have basil there too.
-
its way to cold to show the bush
-
The frost hasn't had the least affect on my lavender or catmint.
-
our garden is covered in snow

Just got a new seed catalog in the mail. Stokes Seeds has some really interesting seeds. Found gourd seeds for next autumn.

Taking the refuse bins out to the kerb for collection on Wednesday I found myself having to push aside shrubs that have become overgrown over the winter. So I thought a few branches needed clipping, and seeking my garden shed - found it under an shroud of spider webs - I battled through the boxes of Xmas Decorations until I found my secateurs rusty with lack of use. Well the simple act of holding this instrument of destruction in my hand seems to have woken the dormant GardenMan within me, and the couple of branches became a recycle waste bin full of clippings - so much so that, once the bin is emptied, I suspect I will be dragged back to clip the remainder of that area of shrubbery. Saturday brought the first "real" summery weekend of the year bright sunshine, 21 degrees Celcius guaranteed, and the recently aroused GardenMan dragged me zombie-like from bed chanting the incantation "Must Mow Lawn - Must Mow Lawn - Must Mow Lawn......" That required a trip to the petrol filling station with my petrol can to feed the beast that is my mower. There a real scrummage was taking place - to the left the can wielding GardenMen - seems I'm not alone in harbouring this dormant mutation - to the right cars crammed with screaming children hell bent on that other hot summer weekend traditional pastime of driving off into the countryside to find a queue of traffic going nowhere fast. Suitably armed with liquid feed for my monster I released it from the shed, offered up the magical potion, and making the traditional magical incantations - not repeatable here - performed the ritual rites to bring the beast roaring to life in service to GardenMan again. Once done GardenMan seems, for a while, sated and permitted the return of CouchPotatoSofaMan to embrace the weekends sport schedules from the hazard-free environ of my lounge. Although GardenMan had one last defiant act before settling - after showering off the soil from mowing the grass - he reached into my wardrobe and brought out "The Shorts" - well one from a selection of such - It appears that I'm bound to spend my off-time clad in these from now on. Cue family reeling in embarrassment once more I can feel GardenMan writing to-do-lists though, I fear I've not seen the last of him yet Martin

Ahhh, GardenMan, you are not alone! My ever lovin' hubby has several pairs of "Short Pants" aka Shorts that will soon be coming out of storage. We've had lots of rain & starting to see bits of green poking up. Bunnies are back & sharing cracked corn under our tree with birds, ducks, deer & squirrels. Chipmonks should be lurking about next.

With the very, very cold winter we had, things that normally would be in bloom by now are late coming up this year. Our wisteria vines will be shipped in May! I can hardly wait!
