How Does Your Garden Grow?
-
The other day when I was planting (on-sale annuals) one of my cats pounced nearby. It was just one of those little voles, but it made horrible piteous squeaking/chirping. It was awful. I hate that part of nature. I'm also glad not to have rodents eating my veggies... Anyway, on a more pleasant note, this year is the best garden I remember for years, or maybe ever. The early warm spring, then heat in June and July for the melons, squash, cucumbers etc. For a while we got heat and sun every day then pouring rain at night. I couldn't have got luckier this year.

A couple of weeks ago, I planted some black eyed susans. Tomorrow, we're going to plant a rose tree - the roses are cherry red. Lots of weeding to catch up on when it turns cool again.

thinking of getting the bush trimmed ready for the summer,,,

Things are looking good in the garden.

The heat has been fantastic for my lotus flowers and water lilies...they are blooming beautifully this year!

The deer have totally destroyed our tomatoes, sunflowers & beans. But they left our catmint, oregano, & basil alone.

I have never over fertilized my roses, but I have seen the burnt petals of over fertilized roses. Unfortunately, over fertilization can kill your roses. If you have a soaker hose, a good thirty minute watering will help to wash away excess fertilizer. If the roses are potted, give them a good flooding. Clip the affected blossoms. Hope this helps to save them.

Roses require a lot of care but are very much worth it. As soon as I see cane that has turned brown, I immediately start pruning it off. I hope our rose tree survives while we're away..... I saw some rose-like flowers in one of the gardens here. I asked the gardeners (very friendly & happily answered my questions) what they were & was told Lisianthus. I want some for our garden next summer!

Bush now shaped,,,,is yours

it going to start raining maybe that will water down the fertilizer. It been really hot too 90's so maybe there just get fried by the intense heat.

Our garden survived while we were away. But now everything's dry again - in bad need of rain. I'm looking for Chinese Lanterns to plant next.

Actually, I JUST picked my last bell peppers last weekend. Could have waited 'till, oh, today because tonight is the first time the low is below frost, but didn't want to chance it. I did a little experiment this year. When puchasing my annuals last May, I saw some bell pepper plants, 6 to be exact, on sale for only $1.79 for all 6. Well, why not get those and set them out in my flower garden, I mused? The flowers grew really well in that spot last year, so why not try to actually grow something we can eat? Well, I harvested my last 12 bell peppers Oct. 22nd. Had several red ones. Three of them turned orange several days later on the kitchen counter. WOW. They are soooo sweet and are loaded with vitamin C. So, I'm thinking my little experiement went really well and plan to plant a real vegetable garden next year.

all turned over & waiting for next year

We just had a nasty bout of killer frost - amazingly some of our roses managed to survive & are still in bloom. I have flowering cabbage & ornamental kale in planters & they are doing great!

The frost is going to give them a big surprise I have had some critter eating my vegtables and my minature sunflowers and some of my coreopsis. I really wanted to see the sunflowers against the white picket fence... I'm going to have to leave him/her maybe some peanuts or something!!! Just went back to look at my old flower garden.... It's so hard starting a new garden... I don't want winter to come... I need flowers
