How Does Your Garden Grow?

I have just seedlings in a pot just starting. There seems to be some growth going there. love doris.

We have several flower beds on our property. There's a small one in front with peonies, primroses, tulips, marigolds, hyacinths & a shepherd's hook with hanging baskets with mini begonias. On the other side in front is a larger bed withholly. rhododendrons, bleeding hearts, lilacs & an azalea bush. Across from our garage is another flower bed with tulips, lilies, pansies, mums & then 10 flower boxes filled with assorted mini begonias. Our side yard has a bed with red carpet roses, yellow cone flowers, hydrangeas, mums, mini begonias, marigolds & some wild flowers. On the opposite side of the fence in our back yard is a small rose garden, with some marigolds to keep the Japanese beetles away. Then we have a veggie garden further back with tomatoes, green beans, pumpkins & gourds. This year we used tomato cages & the groundhogs weren't able to eat our tomatoes! I also have a pot of catmint & a pot of lilies of the valley which will be planted as soon as there's a day with no rain & reasonable temps! I also have a teapot planter with marigolds & 3 swan planters with mini begonias.

sounds great Gypsiegirl.

Thanks feact! We've also got wild raspberries growing by the creek & some blue flax. I'm going to be putting in some ornamental cabbage & kale this autumn & lots of bright color mums.

I love gardening and planting! About two months ago I planted some California poppy seeds and they sprung up quite nice, but I think this heat was a lot and they seem pretty dry.... and in the backyard we have two fig trees which are looking great. and a lime tree, which has many limes and have a bunch of other trees that are growing nicely too. We also have an apricot tree, last year it had many many flowers, but the wind would come and blow them off, still we had many apricots, but this year wasn't as successful.

I think my dahlias are nearing the end of their time. Pumpkins & gourds are hiding now.

Occasionally help my friend with her garden and get to enjoy the wonderful outcome. Not to mention being able to take some great photos! I sometimes do landscraping as we call it here but by no means would I say that I have a "green thumb." This past weeekend, her Luna Red Hibiscus flowers began blooming. Man they're huge! Unfortunately they last but a day. Click for larger pic.

SillyLoveSongs: They are beautiful! I'm looking forward to getting bulbs to plant for Spring.

Those ARE beautiful, Mark!!! I had one, one year and it was enourmous and absolutely stunning but oh, soooo fragile : Shame they don't last very long.

I am in the midst of a bountiful kitchen counter full of tomatoes. OMG! Too many at once. And the plants look like they can barely hang on. So, last nite our salad was so full of tomatoes you could barely find the lettuce. Today will just be hot dogs & tomatoes! It's too warm outside to even think about making soup.

I can't wait for lovely Autumn flowers/plants & Winter Pansies that withstand frost

I agree with you that they are beautiful GYPSYGIRL. They do need lots of sunlight for strong stems as I understand. My friend's were getting rained upon the other day and they wasted no time in drooping over.

Yeah Claudia, I believe they average to be about 8 inches in diameter. Actually, I want to set up a video camera and do a time-lapse thing. I love how they look the night before blooming. Quite rich in colour, shape and texture. Well, here's another one which I find cool. It's the 'Rose de Sharon.' Click for larger pic. My friend likes The Beatles but she absolutely hates, the beetles! The Japanese Beetle variety. We have a Grub problem in our neck of the woods and they are currently wreaking havoc on these flowers in particular.

That is a perfect example of a variety of hibiscus known as the rose of sharon. Tell your friend that she is an artist!

I will! Thanks Steven. She does put a lot of effort into it and she really saved them from destruction by those awful beetles. What knocks me out is how those trees survive our winters. And the maturest of the 6 or 7 she has, is only about 4 years old now. They are truly quite resilient.

I love the look of Rose of Sharon and plan to plant one next year. Our veggies are having ups and downs due to the amount of rainfall we have had this summer (almost nine inches this month). Tomatoes (Big Boy, cherry, and grape) are doing fairly well. Green beans were a bumper crop until the heat set in, but I have planted more in hopes of geting more for the freezer in the fall. Lettuce did well, especially the Romaine. The peppers are going gangbusters now that the August heat has set in (and humidity, I suspect). We have two small apple trees, but groundhogs appear to be very prolific this year, and actually climb up into the lower branches to shake the apples to the ground.

We have a purple rose of sharon. At the time, I thought it was a regular rose, had I known, I probably wouldn't have planted it. Not among my favourites. I'd like to get some pussy willows in the Spring.

I am starting on my herbs and will take pictures as soon as the hot summer in Texas is over. Fall is delicious --cool air, beautiful flowers, and gentle shrubs!

My white Easter lilies are blooming for the 2nd x this year!

Here are some chrysanthemums and some volunteer petunias that seeded themselves from previous pots that I had setting out... http://i229.photobucket.com/albums/ee298/SurSteven/002-2.jpg
