Disregarding the U.S. Supreme Court's colossal screw-up yesterday* -- today, it struck down the anti-gay Defense Of Marriage Act, as well as California's anti-gay Proposition 8.
*=it basically undid the key element of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which means that southern states with a history of racist voter-suppression may resume their tactics (poll taxes, literacy tests, Voter ID laws)

Hey audi
yes the decision on VRA was a bummer. The conservatives know the only way they can win elections in future is to keep people from voting. I think it will backfire with minorities due to anger. As for todays decision re DOMA etc. congrats! "google" gay today...google is wrapped in rainbow flag!

Today's celebration is bittersweet; the Supreme Court, today, has also taken away our "right to remain silent" under the 5th Amendment.

"JUST ICE" 1994 Joanie Mitchell... "I pulled up behind a Cadillac We were waiting for the light And I took a look at his license plate It said "Just Ice" Is justice just ice? Governed by greed and lust? Just the strong doing what they can And the weak suffering what they must? And the gas leaks And the oil spills And sex sells everything And sex kills Doctors' pills give you brand new ills And the bills bury you like an avalanche And lawyers haven't been this popular Since Robespierre slaughtered half of France! And Indian chiefs with their old beliefs know The balance is undone - crazy ions You can feel it out in traffic Everyone hates everyone! And the gas leaks And the oil spills And sex sells everything And sex kills All these jackoffs at the office The rapist in the pool Oh and the tragedies in the nurseries - Little kids packin' guns to school The ulcerated ozone These tumors of the skin This hostile sun beating down on This massive mess we're in! And the gas leaks And the oil spills And sex sells everything And sex kills Sex kills"

Long time since the last time I entered this thread... and it's still a lot about "not liking" corporations. Let me post (again) this famous quote... no he wasn't sort of a anti-system guy, he wasn't a outsider, he wasn't an artist... he was a politician and he was the president of the United States of America, go figure... Long version of the quote... http://theredpillmedia.com/lincolnQuote.png

Good post, Ollie.

Well, thanks to President Obama, whom I voted for two freaking times, I have now lost the privately purchased healthcare I had for the past 28 years! 28 years and they raised the premiums so much due to the Prez's policies I can no longer go to the doctor.
Thanks Obama.

And they need to reverse their error of allowing Super-PACS to (nearly) buy elections, too!

I never had any respect 4 that group, but thanks to the Supremes as well.
And all the politicians who don't care about the working/middle class of America.
I liked the idea of everyone having access to health care, I just had no idea I would be left out in the cold cause of rising insurance rates. Mine is over five hundred and something dollars and rising every 2 months (edit: it is right at $300.00 every month!) That is a lot when you consider all the other things I have to pay 4. I just have to drop it. Plus the insurance does not cover but a small portion of medicine and/or doctor's visits. And I supposedly had great health coverage...whatever! The Gov't is weeding out the less fortunate every day.

This is why the U.S. needs to follow Europe's and Canada's lead: Single-payer. The only solution.

The President's thoughtful comments on racism and this country's many race-related disparities were a spot-on homerun with me today. It was necessary, and I am convinced that this will create a dialogue that will shift toward a national commitment for people to examine what they can do to shove racism back in the closet.

Oh, but I still like President Obama. Just voicing my view on the healthcare thing and my insurance. However, I do think his idea of getting the Federal Government to 'help' State and Local law enforcement agencies in the USA to implement better ways of enforcing civil rights issues is very important. Especially in the South USA. That was one of his talking points in his speech yesterday. Here in this town I hope to be out of soon, we have had 31 homicides this year alone! Most, but not all, have been black on black gun crimes with some element of drug related activities. The Police Chief is so incompetent, he blames it on the criminals, not the police dept. inability to stop crime! If it were white people getting killed I know there would be an outcry of injustice. This year the Federal Gov't DID step in to 'help' the local police. If it weren't for that it would be hopeless here. Still one cannot walk the streets at night where you once felt safe. It is sad.
p.s.> but the police department here won't even write up crime reports! Even for white or hispanic, Asian, or African american people. If you are RICH though, they WILL write up the reports and they WILL find the criminals for them. So here, in Montgomery, Alabama, it is not the color of your skin so much as how much money or what your last name is.

So, shall we discuss white-on-white crime now? Staggering statistics.
