Back in my day we had to...
-
We knew how to read directions and read instructions...and weren't completely helpless if there were no choices on a smart phone to make our decisions for us.
-
We had to eat everything on our plates. If we didn't, in some families you'd get the same food until you did eat it all.

I was always told to eat everything because there were children starving in China. That never made any sense to me. I'm not hungry, but I have to eat because someone on the other side of the world is hungry? Should I go to sleep because someone else is tired? The funny thing is, no one is starving in China.
-
I was told the same thing about starving children in China. How was my food supposed to get to China?
-
We knew better than to ask for things. We were always told: "Money doesn't grow on trees."
-
We weren't rich by any means (my dad made $10,000/year in 1970 and I thought we were loaded!) but there was just me, mom and dad and there were only two things I asked for that I didn't get: a horse and tickets to see The Beatles in 1966!

Your friends in the neighborhood would come over, ring the bell, and ask your mother if you could come out to play.
-
Or you could go to their door and Say / sing Jim.... eeeee Even one syllable names Bah ....obb... (Bob)

It still amazes me! Recently friends of mine who are in a Beatles tribute band were live on FB while being driven to their gig in Japan and I was posting to them and they were responding in the video! It was wild! It was real late here, like 2 am, but of course it was 1 pm there.

I would See things of interest that they were Looking at within seconds I got those in the very early morning As it was afternoon for them. It used to be ... Someone would send a Postcard .... There was the chance that The postcard would arrive after the Sender got home. I went somewhere and mailed a Postcard to myself ... I got home before It got to my house....

Did anyone else have a dinner bell?

My best friend in childhood's mother called her home by ringing the dinner bell.

We had to .... Repair, rebuild ... Do what was needed to get something working again - and for a much easier cost to accept. Recently I had a few repairs that I could have done - Factoring in the cost of the parts to get it going again VS. spending an Additional cost to buy the whole thing New ... I have bought the new. When looking for a job not long ago I offered to repair products for this One company ... They said "why pay you when we can toss all these and buy new?" They didn't have to take on the Repair and labor. I need to repair a few more things where NEW is a fortune now and parts are high in cost - to where I have to save up just for parts. The Job at hand is very doable - just the cost is the stopping point for now
Oh man is that true. I read an article that said: The World's Plastic Waste Could Bury Manhattan Two Miles Deep Here's a link about that. It should make you think twice the next time you want to toss & buy new: http://time.com/4865807/plastic-waste-bury-manhattan-environment/

I remember back in the day, we went to the drive-in theater to see a movie, especially on a date with a guy. Or you could go with your family in your pajamas, put the back seat down and your parents brought blankets and pillows if you hit tired.
-
We used to be able to ride our bikes without helmets.
-
It used to be legal not having or using a seat belt

I watched a great 1 hour History Channel show on the development of The Internet that I had taped on VCR about 15 years ago. Very interesting!!! Found a youtube on it. An extremely informative and entertaining 45 minutes. I think I'll watch it again tonight.
