Back in my day we had to...

We had to constantly adjust the V shaped antenna on top of the TV, depending on the channel we were watching. We called them rabbit ears...There was no cable TV.
You didn't mention if you pounded the TV with your fist and then the picture was good. Or had a good picture at the rabbit ears, but it went away when you went back to sit down. Someone would say "just stay there"
I had forgotten that bit. We let our dad do the pounding of the TV... and yes, he would say "just stay there" if we tried to help... of course when he was out we all had our own favorite spots for those rabbit ears... It was an early theory lesson.

Back in my day, "life hacks" were called common sense. And common sense was pretty common.

I remember going through the "want ads" in a newspaper - multiple pages of jobs and descriptions. Many didn't fit - but there was no filter - so you would look at them all.... Then send a resume and cover letter by mail * sometimes call. By comparison - Last year plus some time - I had the resume and additional details about me - in a few places - and "filtered" The types of jobs, locations etc.... I could find out who companies were By Web sites and other info - One place showed me their place And who was interviewing me before even meeting. Even with all this .... There is a lot Of work to it .... In the past ... I wasted my time looking And not fitting what they wanted As well as it wanted their time...
-
away from home we had telephone booths no cell phones; no texting; no games .... you couldn't leave a message ... if someone wasn't there ring, ring, ring it was only to talk to someone in person and there might have been a line because someone in the booth was taking their time keeping those in line anxiously waiting it was a time when you got to the point for the call because you had to deposit coins (money) too bad if you ran out of change no credit cards cash only but we didn't mind that's the way it was
-
We had to go to the bank - Usually on pay day to "directly deposit" A paycheck. And do many transfers There that today you can just do in seconds online, phone, tablet etc.... Next: Had to have a map in the car For trips (you still can) .. It was necessary.
-
We didn't dare talk back to our parents. If we did, there were consequences. And in some families, a wooden spoon was not just used for cooking.
-
We had a wooden ruler, until my brother grabbed it, and broke it in half
-
We played board games & card games for fun. Our "PlayStation" was our backyard or a park.

We used to play horseshoes and badminton and shuffleboard and Frisbee golf as well!
-
Our parents had bridge (card game) parties, they set up card tables and chairs and got dressed up. Mom made hors d'oeuvres, they broke out the alcohol and started laughing loud... All the men had those flattop buzz cut haircuts

We had to .... Repair, rebuild ... Do what was needed to get something working again - and for a much easier cost to accept. Recently I had a few repairs that I could have done - Factoring in the cost of the parts to get it going again VS. spending an Additional cost to buy the whole thing New ... I have bought the new. When looking for a job not long ago I offered to repair products for this One company ... They said "why pay you when we can toss all these and buy new?" They didn't have to take on the Repair and labor. I need to repair a few more things where NEW is a fortune now and parts are high in cost - to where I have to save up just for parts. The Job at hand is very doable - just the cost is the stopping point for now

We ate dinner as a family--no phone calls were taken. I can't imagine my parents in today's world with everybody having phones at the table. I find that rude.

I strongly agree. That was good family time. I went to a graduation party recently- So many people involved with their phones. Oh well...

Wherever we went, we didn't have to listen to people's loud phone conversations, while waiting in line in a store. have been tempted to join in on some of those ridiculous conversations... ops: Just waiting for the grocery check out person to start gabbing while checking out the groceries.
-
I don't like listening to other people's phone conversations. However, since you are forcing me, let me listen to both sides.

Now that's an idea, tap them on the shoulder, and ask them if they could please put it on speaker phone I would love to see a Saturday Night Live skit with people in line, dealing with that oblivious person, who is speaking really loud about personal info, maybe? That would be funny. Or at a restaurant...a romantic moment at one table...interrupted by someone's loud phone call... There are endless ways they could do that skit...

Turned on the tv manually, had to wait for it to "warm up."

Back then we had "Common Sense"
