What kind of dog is he? Looks a bit like a St Bernard in the face. Really cute.

A long time ago a lady at my work place was having a tough time with her children at the time. A co-worker gave her that article. Soon she was laughing it off and calling them cats or dogs. She could not find the article to explain why she and the co-worker would talk about their children using the cat and dog analogy. (*I got the gist of it when they explained it). Now I see it in print on this thread ..... thanks for sharing it Andy
You bet

My thoughts on dogs is that I wish there was more research on a condition called SARDS (sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome). The picture below is of our little pooch from earlier this summer, not long before she lost her sight permanently. Fortunately 1) it was a painless process and 2) we were told that she would adapt just fine and that seems true - she seems very happy and if you were to see her now, you probably would not pick up on her condition right away. But it's still scary and sad to our family. The appearance of her eyes look perfectly normal except that the pupils remain somewhat permanently dilated as if she was in a dark room. She occasionally bumps into some things but pretty much has the layout of our house down pat. And she can still jump up on a couch or bed (and back down again) with no problems...so as far as we can tell by these pieces of evidence as well as her general happy attitude, she seems pretty well adjusted.

Awww...poor baby. How old is she? We see a blind dog at the park every once in awhile. She is there with 2 other dogs. I stop & pet all of them. The people adopted her after she was blind. I wonder if it was from the same SARDS that you mention.

She's 5 years old, which is on the low end of the 5-7 years typically associated with the onset of this condition. Regarding the dog you encountered and whether she was a victim of this or not, ask the owners if she just more or less went blind for no known reason...while we actually went through with finding the route of the problem (via an ERG performed - painless and not very invasive test), there are estimates that a lot more dogs are afflicted with this than what is reported...basically because the 'primary care' vet (we were sent to a specialist) will tell the owners there's nothing that can done but the dog will adapt...and the owners will just go on that. Other times, the dogs adapt so well, owners don't realize for a while...and on that note, evidently my daughter and wife suspected something was up with her sight a good two weeks before they told me about it...and I had no real clue

Like humans - your dog just might in addition be exceptionally gifted

When we adopted our dog we were told she was 5 or 6. And we have had her for 6 years now. She seems to be starting to become hard of hearing & OMG does she ever have the lumps all over her chest. Doc says that is very common for hounds.

Is she bothered by them? I hope not ... I'm only guessing - she still likes to be petted, brushed, and/or her belly rubbed ... ??
