what do you think of Dogs

When we adopted our dog we were told she was 5 or 6. And we have had her for 6 years now. She seems to be starting to become hard of hearing & OMG does she ever have the lumps all over her chest. Doc says that is very common for hounds.
Is she bothered by them? I hope not ... I'm only guessing - she still likes to be petted, brushed, and/or her belly rubbed ... ??
The ones under her arms seem to be starting to bother her when she lays in front of me at the dinner table. I wonder if I should get them removed. Vets are soo expensive. They wanted to take off a small "skin tag" type thing on her head & they wanted $400.00 for that!

Can't wait to see how much weight our Aussie puppy has gained. When we took him to the vet the end of Oct., he weighed in at 24.4 lbs!

I was just wondering how fan4-45 is getting on with the new dog?!?

Thanks for asking. I'm still working on getting her to go at least once a day. Usually every other day. I do walk her everyday and keep her in her crate while we're away. Any advice?

Really? Lucy does her duty 2x a day. But I guess it just depends on the dog food...or people food. Lucy also eats broccoli every day & cucs & banana. Not all at the same time...but maybe that keeps her regular too. Cupcake should be used to what you are feeding her by now...you'd think. Are you REALLY watching? She may be going more often but is when you are not looking. Or if she is eating it give her a couple pieces of pineapple. That's supposed to make them stop. I've used the pineapple trick before.

Hey, thanks for the pineapple trick suggestion. We have been watching her VERY carefully. She hasn't eaten yet today, so we'll see. I'll try the broccoli, cucs, and bananas, too. A friend of mine said her dog really liked cauliflower and my mom puts green beans in her dog's dry food and she eats it right away, usually. For some reason the snow has thrown her off. She almost seems like she's in hibernation mode, sleeps a lot.

Oobu, you were RIGHT. She slipped away just for a minute and apparently went on the oriental rug LAST NIGHT. Urine, I can't stand. Now, I've got to call the carpet cleaner to come out. It's just so hard to walk them 2x or 3x a day. Dang. And, I was watching her oh so closely.

^ lol. Just get her used to your schedule. It really is amazing how 'on schedule' they can be. But of course feed her at the same time & then outside at the same time all the time!

That is what I am working on. Poor darling didn't HAVE a schedule at the breeder's. She fed them at all different times and she had a doggie door. So, they went out when they pleased. I feed her and try to take her out afterwards and she doesn't want to go. So, I have to take her out anyway or put her in her crate. This is hard work either watching her or crating her all the time, but surely it will pay off.

How many dogs did the breeder have? Yeah...then all the puppies too! Oh my.

We weren't sure. She had at least three mothers--two large cages with puppy litters in each of them in her front living room and a third mother had not delivered yet.

awww...the little sweetheart. Is she lonesome? I thought that of Lucy since she was with 10-12 dogs in the foster home. But the grandma (of the foster mom) said take her...she will just blossom when she is alone. And she did...in her own way. She is still shy...or maybe I should say not concerned with anyone. She is just a doll & I think I will adopt another connhound when the time comes.

You are giving back to the universe and the universe must be well pleased I was remembering how Rocco had a very bad habit that took me a couple years to break him of nipping people, but he learned. Maybe that was my encouragement to not give up on Cupcake. They really do respond to our love, don't they? We just have to persevere (and not kill them when they pee on our rugs!!!!!).

Yes...so true. Thank goodness Lucy only did that once. I made such a fuss (since I caught her in the act) that she never did it in the house again. Although I did have some time where I needed that pineapple. Hopefully she won't start that again...but it was poopsicles that she ate! where is that puking icon? lol

Hahahahaha!!!!! I scolded CC, but not too much, b/c the poor little thing cowers and I can't bear to see it.

This is good advice. I do not have a fenced in yard. I went outside with my dog every hour more or less at first. (Instead of opening the door - sending them out to do their business). I walked around my house - back and front .... showed him the area ... he stuck close at first - almost cringing and low to the ground. I took a big chance in a few days - took his leash off ...... and he stayed near me. We walked around the house and he did not dart off. (*I had watched someone's dog a few weeks previous and it ran out and down the street and out of sight in a nano second. I thought - How do I explain to them that I was watching your dog and lost it in the first 15 minutes. Luckily a neighbor saw it ... put it in their yard. I did not know that as I was looking for a long time. Since I was not home they knocked on other neighbors doors). I had a good idea that I didn't need the leash around the house. I kept walking outside with him. I was concerned that he could have run if he saw another dog walking by or a person. There were a few uncertain times. Trying to walk to a park area was a challenge (I used the leash) .... it takes time and I wish all of you luck during this time .... it is worth it now ..... so all your sacrifice and effort hopefully pays off.

That's nice that you can walk your dog off leash. Our yard is not fenced in either. But we have a zip line from the house to the shed in the back so that's how she goes outside. Her nose is too strong & would just take off hunting something...they say once their nose takes over their brain shuts down.

The type of dog that I was watching for someone had "hound" in his mix. That is exactly what he did ..... his nose went for something and he was off to find it .... I have since watched this dog .... and for a short term took him in .... while the person moved into an apartment that did not take dogs .... to a house where they took the dog to live ..... I walked my dog and this dog at the same time ..... at first it was tough to do .... then it got easier and both dogs looked like they enjoyed the walks ..... this dog was small but could stop me in my tracks if his nose caught any scent ..... One time I dropped his leash and he stuck around .... I got confidence in him .... he took off and it took me a long time to get him to come back (I mostly worried about a few busy roads and that he would try to cross them). If he comes to visit ... I use his leash .....even if my dog is running around without one.

Thank you, wise Mr. Fool! I figured out that the breeder must have fed her adult dogs at night because CC gets hungry every night about 9pm like clockwork. I did NOT feed her last night, except for two tiny milk bones after we got home from a Christmas party. She gobbled up her breakfast, 1/2 cup, and would have eaten more, but I am waiting until 5:30 everyday. I'll put it out then, if she doesn't eat, I'll take it away after about 30 minutes. She has GOT to get on a schedule. We also have two other challenges. Apparently, mice are visiting at night an eating up her left over dog food. I got a mouse trap after school today and will attach some bacon to it. I'll have to MAKE sure Cupcake is with me at all times after I get it ready for the night. I may put it under the sink first and see if I can lure them there, then she won't be able to get to it anyway. The other challenge is coyotes roam these parts, so I have to keep my eyes on her even when I let her out in our fenced in backyard. No one every said anything would ever be easy. Apparently, my life proves that theory.

Oh my...you do have your hands full. A new dog, mice & coyotes. I don't envy any of that! We have some coyotes around here too but I don't think they'd come around here.
