2012 Olympic/Paralympic Games talk and trivia

I'm still looking back at the coverage of the closing ceremony: Just prior to the show itself the BBC featured the winning poem in the Lord Mayors children's poetry competition:
Am I wrong? -

The declared aim of the show director was to engage the athletes and spectators in the experience - to feature songs and events that encouraged audience participation. From what I saw, everything from Eric Idle, through Freddie Mercury to the DJ Fat Boy Slim did just that.
Not John Lennon for instance, they should have used Give Peace A Chance for that, for instance. And not Brian May, he played a long guitar solo, no interaction with that.
-
Sometimes I have thought that there could be some athlets involvements at the Closing ceremonies. As long as they want to. Like Kanaeva does somethings with a ball, then the ball to Lebron James than dunks then Usain Bolt picks the balls and starts to run with it, something like that, uniting many sports.
-
Did anyone notice the guy presenting the flowers to the marathon winners? He grabbed the bunches by the flower heads instead of the stems!! What was he doing?!?!?!?
-
Actually the only musician to get to engage the audience was Paul McCartney in the opening, that guy.
-
Just a little tidbit......2/3 of the gold medals on the US Olympic team were won by the GALS!!
-
Didn't you guys think that Roger Daltrey sang live? Seemed like it to me. I enjoyed the Who (and Zak Starkey on drums!)

THERE is the problem. They should have had Paul in the closing ceremonies...not the opening. There would have been more artists (for the haters) to pick on. Now he's not even included on the cds? : I thought My Generation (Who) would have beed a great song for all the "older" guys & groups to come onstage for.

the Olympics have completely changed the perception of Britain on the world stage. two weeks ago the world thought we were shit at sport but great at music...

haha... no The show was about the history of English music, and that almost like saying the history of the world's music... go figure. Anyway, the HISTORY, I don't know any new great musician from the UK. The business is dead, less than 10000 copies for a #1. Bye bye music records and record companies. 2:

21st Century Paul:
I found yesterday the CDs of the opening ceremony. And The End and Hey Jude are not included.
The CD was released on-line through iTunes almost the exact moment the last firework died out. It's clear all the music performed and broadcast that night was playback - the logistics of live open radio mikes at such a chaotic event would be horrendous except for speeches such as the athletes and official promises. So Paul's bit - "we decided to go live, live, live" particularly the Hey Jude sing-along section with the crowd and competitors would not have been edited/mixed and available to be included. Watching the show I saw the natural ending being the flame lighting and fireworks to the Pink Floyd soundtrack and always suspected Paul's coda to be a late addition. The sound track album contents, and the pre-prepared pdf booklet (which again doesn't mention Paul's performance) seems to support that viewpoint. Martin

Just noticed this:
02. Julian Lloyd Webber, London Symphony Orchestra & STOMP - Salut D'Amour (feat. Timothy Spall) (02:57)
I must admit I didn't recognise Julian Lloyd Webber but he was such a small player on such a vast canvas. Knowing Julian he would have his number one cello with him which is a genuine Stradavarius, one of only 50 made. The last valuation I've seen: $20 million Brave man.. Martin

For those in the UK BBC licence-paying area: If you are missing your daily Olympic fix of sport the BBC is still maintaining a comprehensive archive of every sport, every session here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/2012/schedule-results So whether you wish to revisit a triumphant event or catch up with some of the minor events for the first time, you can watch all session from preliminary rounds right through to the final medal sessions. There was so much happening it was impossible follow everything first time out. I'm heading to the beach volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics, and synchronised swimming Martin

Why is Beady Eye's performance of "Wonderwall" missing?
-
Another typically Brtish spat I imagine: Since the show, Noel Gallagher has done the dirty on his brother Liam by going on record saying that he - rather than Liam - was first approached to perform Wonderwall. But he turned it down "because they expected him to mime it"... However he allowed Liam to perform it with Beady-Eye but only after graciously approving the use of the song. Perhaps he then refused the rights to include it in the CD - denying his brother any lasting record of his role? Knowing the complete breakdown of communication between the two I'm surprised he even allowed Liam to sing the song on the night. Watching Liam perform on the night it didn't seem that he wanted to do it anyway, talk about bad attitude.... Martin
-
Could be the reason, but I doubt it. Don't know why, but I think Noel doesn't care that much. But of course you could be right. Anyway, I don't care either as I don't buy these CD, I was just curious.

Ach!! That guy was AWFUL!!!! He hurt my ears. Maybe thats why I have earache now
