That lady on facebook hurt my feelings when she deleted my posts about the Holocaust, saying I had no right to have an opinion when it was some of her Polish forbears who actually were forced to go to the death camps and died there. For all I know, maybe some of my ancestors had to go as many or all hailed from Europe. Of course I knew millions of Poles, Gypsies and homosexuals, et. al. were murdered by Nazis in the death camps, it wasn't all Jews. My niece in high school read a great deal about Auchwitz in books by Eli Weitzel and other authors, my sister read The Diary of Anne Frank again this week and wants the DVD on Anne Frank, I read Anne Frank's diary as a child, I read "Man's Search for Meaning" by Auschwitz survivor Victor Frankel-- should none of us have done this, because we're not actually Jewish, as far as we know. I feel some sullen resentment towards that lady. The posts were on my own f.b. page, some written by her, some by me and she managed to make mine vanish somehow, along with hers.

The Holocaust is like politics or religion. You can talk about them online, but it's probably smarter not to. I used to think I knew a few things about the Holocaust, including the fact that no one in Israel calls it the Holocaust. I read some books. I went to Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam. I saw Europa Europa. Then I went to Jerusalem. A few hours at Yad Vashem was worth more than every book I've ever read. There was a little old lady talking about her experiences during the war. Watching a movie about people being murdered is sad. Listening to someone who was actually there was heartbreaking. What they lived through is mind numbing, and pretty soon there won't be anyone left to tell us their stories. This woman on Facebook who hurt your feelings had relatives who were there. She probably grew up hearing the stories. They're an integral part of her childhood the way 4th of July picnics and shoveling snow is part of ours. "For all I know, maybe some of my ancestors had to go" isn't the strongest argument in your favor. By the way, the authors are Elie Wiesel and Viktor Frankl and the death camp is Auschwitz. Typos like that can really upset people on such an emotional topic, especially right after one of them died.

Miserable, nasty, snotty letter carrier. She was caught jumping over the railing on our porch & could have broken it, as it's plastic not iron. I very politely asked her not to do it again. I informed her that she might not only bust the railing, but she could also hurt herself as well. She lied, denied everything, even though she was caught red-handed. And as I walked back into the house, she attempted to continue to argue with me! I am so, so very, very happy that our regular letter carrier is back again!

Thanks, Hailey Mc., what do they call it in Israel? That lady who complained had Polish distant relatives forced to go. I know it's a sensitive issue and in fact I felt a twinge of alarm I guess you'd say as I launched into that subject. One of my Jewish facebook friends asked if I'd really read I.B. Singer. I love his excellent short stories and novels. The Phillip Roth novel read recently, not so much. The teen protagonist (set in Korean war era) was Jewish, but a self-declared atheist. He was expelled from his college for not attending chapel, which led to him having to go into battle, and the uber-violent description of enemy soldiers killing him distressed and disturbed me a lot. I was born without the understanding war gene.

Shoah is the Hebrew word. Holocaust means a big fire. In fact, speaking of M*A*S*H, there's a scene where Radar asks Hawkeye what the world holocaust means and he answers, "An immense conflagration", which is a literal definition and also a quote from Elie Wiesel's Night. Nowhere in the scene do they ever mention "the Holocaust", but they're obviously both talking about it. It's a brilliant piece of dialogue for a sitcom.

Idiot at National Auto - we called to have parts put aside & ready for pick up in less than an hour's time. Twit not only didn't have parts ready, when we got home, we discovered he sold us the wrong parts. Have to make an extra trip to return parts.

I would, too. It's sad watching it in older relatives and they can't find their words. Heartbreaking!

It really is. Its so sad talking on the phone and hearing the struggle to sometimes just remember the simplest of words.
