Think people north of the Watford Gap aint that interested.North/South divide.Even tho we are help paying for it out of our taxes.Today,it was announced that 548 Merseyside police officers will be sent to help in the saftey of the Olympics. The remainder of the officers will not be having summer holidays. With the cut back for Policing in Liverpool. It leaves our streets even more open to the plebs that roam it.

I still look in on the relay coverage when I can. My respect is growing for the torch relay protection team, a small group of police officers travelling every day with the torch - they're the ones in grey jogging outfits - both male and female oficers. They seem to do long stints running alogside the torch and their faces have become familar as I watch each day. Yes, they're trained to deal swiftly and, if need be, harshly with anyone threatening the event, but their attitude towards the relay runners - kind words of encouragement, guiding them to pose to the cameras and chivvying away camera wielding fans from the route - is a credit to them all. One lovely instance was when a female torch bearer had to leave her young son - maybe four or five - at the roadside with family - he broke away from the family child minder and ran along keeping up with his mum on the torch. One of the female PCs cottoned on what was happening and took his hand running along with him until he could be reunited with his mother when her stint on the torch had ended. I'd love to think one or some of them are articulate enough to write a book on their days with the torch - there'll be loads of commercial photo's to illustrate it, I'm sure there'll be many a rich anecdote to be told when it's all over. Martin

Silly question that only the_fool would ask: What do they do with the torch when they are in a plane? (A train, a car, a bus.... a ferry etc...)

The Davey Lamp used in this instance has a small porthole to allow a taper to reach the flame both to remove "The Flame" and light a torch and to use a taper to collect the flame from The Torch at the end of a series of relay runs and return it to the safety of the lamp. There are a series of these lamps running at any one time to ensure the integrity of "The Flame" throughout, only one is removed from the security of the coach behind the runners at any one time. With only about 36 hours to go before the relay ends at the Olympic Stadium the BBC has compiled a "greatest hits" compilation of torch relay events and moments. A very emotional watch: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01l938x/Britains_Olympic_Torch_Story/ Available for at least seven days on the iPlayer although I suspect this particular programme may go into their long-term archives.
