Writing my resume to try a job for the airlines...love2travel
When you get the job, be sure to give us all discounts.
I don't even think employees get much of a discount anymore!

That's a shame. My list of places to go is a lot bigger than my bank account.

Mine too! I used to work for the airlines and it was $24 RT for first! The meal and drinks were worth it alone! Now the frequent flyers get all the standby seats! I have a weekly FUN'd that I put away money every week, so I can work on my list! It's getting costly tho...

Do you mean $24,000?

No, back in 1988 it cost airline employees only $24.00 round trip to fly First Class. That's what the tax was then. I flew all over...to Florida for the day in the winter, just would go to the airport with a small bag and see what planes had First Class seats open...and go wherever for a day or two! Free drinks and a nice meal. Hard to beat prices, plus met interesting people! I went to South America a bunch of times. I went to Hawaii, California, the Caribbean...I switched my days off and worked 3 weeks straight and then a week off, every month! Now you can't do that any longer, the taxes are a lot higher and frequent fliers take all the standby seats! It was wonderful!

None of that could ever work today. Just going to the airport and taking the next available flight will get you an interview backstage with some TSA agents.

Actually, airline employees are pre cleared by the FBI, or something similar. You could still take the next flight, but you usually meal list yourself 24 hours in advance. It's all standby flying, so there has to be an open seat, and most flights are full nowadays, especially in first class! That's the sad thing for airline employees. It was a better benefit years ago. Still I almost got de-planed in Panama once, coming back from South America...then I was gonna have to jumpseat, but somehow it all worked out! Phew!
