Just Wondering... Was "Fame" worth it?
-
Paul... Just wondering.... I appreciate that the 21 year-old-YOU wanted 'fame' and accolades. (At 21 ... we all did....). Was it worth it? Was it worth not being able to go to a movie with your family? Not being able to go shopping, normally? To a football match? I am not being flippant about this... Knowing you came from modest means... Was there a certain 'level' of fame that you sought... That went totally out of your control? Your insight might be meaningful to others. Thank you... Will

Hi Will, Welcome to the message board. Paul doesn't personally respond to posts here, but your thoughts remain valid questions. I have a few personal thoughts in reply myself. Paul was appearing on stage as a member of The Quarrymen at the much earlier age of 15 so his ambition well pre-date the "21 years" mentioned in your query. As to the loss of freedom you suggest in your questions, Paul has been one of the leading performers proving that you can indeed "have your cake and eat it" in this respect as throughout his life - maybe briefly not so during the Beatlemania period - he has been able to lead a normal domestic life doing all the things you suggest are lost to the famous. Whatever aspect of Paul's nature it is, whatever community he settles in the neighbourhood rally round to give him that freedom to go out and about - to the cinema, the shops etc. Martin

Martin... Thank you for your reply. I certainly hope what you describe is the case. Someone who has given so much joy to the world, deserves peace and happiness themselves. My concern was that Paul might have lost some freedom and peace, in giving US happiness. I would like to believe that what you say is true... Those who know him and his family, respect his privacy. I appreciate your thoughts. Will

I appreciate Martins' kind reply... Just wanted to state that grown men DO shed tears.... That was my experience at my only Paul concert, 1989 in Atlanta. I thought it gracious that Paul provided free memoriibilia at the front of the venue...(A retrospective magazine). THAT helped make the experience a positive one. Then... The SHOW! What a memory He and the band created! I feel so blessed to have seen Linda perform that night! She seemed so simple and 'earthy'! She was a true compliment to the band. She had her chops down, and seemed at ease that night. It was good to see She and Paul interact, with love and mutual respect. And, did I shed a tear? Yep. The ' Sgt. Pepper', Magical piano close was more than I had hoped for! Years disappeared. Tears DID appear... A wonderful night... A wonderful memory was created. Will

Welcome to the board, Will
I have found this quote from Paul in Club Sandwich #72 (Winter 1994) Question: If you could go back to 1962, would you still choose to become famous or would you opt for an "ordinary" life? Answer: No thank you! I had "an ordinary life" for 20 years and this one's better.
