McCartney Concert Voice

Didn't Michelly say that in another forum they were discussing that Paul had the same type of surgery done that Adele had? I have no idea which thread that was on. But it could be true.
-
That did come up, but I was never convinced. Still, there was a stark improvement in the latter part of 2012.

I don't know... I actually think that Paul sings many of the songs better now than he did in '89... he struggled terribly on that tour, especially with the "rockers". I'll admit that he handled the softer songs and ballads quite nicely back then. That said, he recovered completely by '93 and, IMHO, that is probably the best he's sounded live in the past 20 years. Still, I think he's been fairly consistent since 2002, with the exception of a couple of songs that he struggles with. But hey... if I'm a McCartney fan and I'm seeing him live for the first time, I could really care less whether or not he struggles during "Maybe I'm Amazed"! PS; my assessment of the 89/90/93 tours is based only on listening to the recordings, as I didn't make it to those shows

I saw him in 89/90. He was fine in the later part of the tour, but in the beginning (Pittsburgh) he was sick and was hoarse. I didnt give a flying f, I was seeing Paul! By July he sounded fine in Cleveland. I dont remember any issue at all in 93. When I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010, he ripped out Helter Skelter like he was 25. Seriously, I dont know how he even does that song. I notice his voice changing more in the softer songs (Blackbird for example). He can still scream out the rockers pretty well. That said, any concert by Paul is special, no matter what. You will have an amazing time!

Getting better with age? Well... Despite my polyana universe, even I know that's not quite true, fletch.
-
By the way: I recall Paul being in damn-near exceptional voice when he sang "Helter Skelter" at London's O2 Area in 2011. Need to look for that...

Paul had alot of problems in `89/`90 from the very beginning. He had to re-arrange shows to give his voice a rest, and some shows got postponed. I believe there was one show where he actually had to leave the stage for a while.Nostalgia and short memories (and keenness to write Paul off now?) have caused people to forget that. He has not had such problems since.

And I can only assume that "Tripping the Live Fantastic" was culled from the "best" performances of that tour. And while I love the album ( I really do... I played it to death when I was 15 years old), I have to admit that Paul is in less than top form on that record. On some songs, he sounds terrific but it's especially noticeable on the "rockers"... he sounds like he's screaming through Birthday and Sgt. Pepper. I think he handles those types of songs with much more ease today, actually. That said, I do believe that he damaged his voice somewhat while rehearsing in '89, possibly because he hadn't toured in 10 years... whatever the reason, he sounded fantastic on the '93 tour, at least from the recordings I've heard

That show was the best i've heard Paul sing since i saw him in Lisbon, Portugal in 2004, it wasn't perfect, but 99% of the time his voice was great.

People who pay $300 for a ticket HAVE to believe his voice is better than ever!

I`m not sure anyone is saying that, but it does annoy me that the problems he had throughout the `89/`90 tour seem to be largely unacknowledged now. It`s ironic that it seems to be looked upon as a golden age, when it was actually when he had the most problems.

Thank you! I agree with you 100%. I also think the 89/90 musical arrangements were the most "dated" sounding of his career. Not with every song, but many of them... even Beatles numbers have a bit of a late 80's/early 90's feel to them. By 93, that was gone and the band had a much more natural and raw feel to their sound.

I actually thought `93 was the better tour, but it was beset with other problems.

Well, I'm glad when I saw him in '90 he sounded fine (and in '93 as well) I was amazed at how fantastic he sounded in 2002 even! He was just shy of 60 then and I was afraid he would have lost a lot. This was before I followed him online so I had no idea what he was going to sing, etc., unlike today.

Well believe me, regardless of how I say his voice sounded in 89/90, I'm still very jealous of you that you got to see him on that tour! LOL I would have really loved to have seen him played Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, Can't Buy Me Love, Put it There and My Brave Face live!!! Worth it for those alone, not to mention the novelty of seeing him play most Beatles songs live for the first tour EVER!!!
-
His voice was great on the 76 tour too! Years later I heard some bootlegs of that time period & his voice sounded soo high...almost as if he was on helium!

That goes without saying--he was in his fu*king prime!

Nobody else in the world could shred a song vocally like McCartney circa 1976... NOBODY!

TRUE! OMG!

Actually, I think Paul was at his vocal peak around '81 thru '83. Most seasoned vocalists agree that a singer doesn't really start sho' nuff SANGIN' until one reaches the age of 39/40'ish.
