I'm so swamped that I barely have time to stop and smell the flowers, but did see this in the LA Times this a.m. (at about 6 a.m. to be exact, way too early for civilization in my book but no choice) and thought I'd share: No surprise that the leadoff song of Emma Burgess' debut album, "Swim," is called "Big Break." In the makeover that saw her segue from being the actress Brandi Emma to a singer-songwriter, Burgess got a few breaks. "It was a combination of charm, tenacity and having Mastin [Kipp, of indie label Love Yourself Records] on my side," she says. "When I looked at the laundry list of people who helped me make this record, I think, 'Oh my God.' " "Swim," which recalls singer-songwriters such as Aimee Mann and Sam Phillips, is notable for not trying too hard. Burgess' vocals remain largely understated while her players ? including Paul McCartney sideman Rusty Anderson on guitar, Mike Garson (David Bowie) on piano, drummers Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails) and Joey Waronker (Beck) and cellist Ana Lenchantin (Eels, Gnarls Barkley) ? add texture to her storytelling. Anderson co-produced the album with Ofer Moses. Kipp first saw Burgess at Room 5 on La Brea while the singer-songwriter was still performing as Brandi Emma. She had landed a few acting roles after moving to L.A. from Massachusetts, but was inspired to pick up the guitar again while recuperating from an accident. Oh, and there's a story behind the guitar. On her cross-country move, Burgess' car broke down in Utah. She couldn't afford to have it fixed, so a young mechanic kept her guitar as collateral. A month later, the mechanic mailed the guitar back. "When I tell that story, people say, 'Oh geez, that's so poignant,' " Burgess says. "I see it as more of a sign that I should write good songs. It showed me there are good people in the world." Burgess performs an early set tonight at the Hotel Cafe; the album will be released on iTunes in a couple weeks.

Rusty's new blog: Monday, July 09, 2007 the stew hello friends. i just flew in from london and boy are my arms.... playing some small venue shows with paul mccartney and it's been a lotta fun. i got to see some new and familiar faces at the highline ballroom in new york, electric ballroom and ica theater in london and amoeba records in hollywierd. that one was a particularly angelomnian experience. lots of star faces in the audience that i could see clearly because of the house lights. the intimacy of these little gigs has been unlike any of the big tour arenas and stadiums. unfortunately, very few people could get in but rumor has it that next year there will be a proper tour. i've also got a show coming up with my band at the viper room in hollywood on the 18th of july. hope those of you in the area can make it. i believe we go on about 9:15p. the secret disco- password is "dresses". i've been writing and recording in my studio. i have no excuse now but to eventually get an album together. is that what they're called...albums? cds? whatever. maybe we'll actually play a few new tunes at the viper room show. i've also been writing and producing some songs with my friend jordan lawhead for his upcoming cd. we've got a deadline because his us tour is happening this fall. he's a very talented singer/songwriter from scottsdale, arizona. we've been having a gas creating together. i read a great book that i would highly recommend for everyone called "the god delusion" by richard dawkins. also," the kite runner" is a great fiction read that i understand is being made into a movie. (speaking of fiction, did you know that the band fiction plane containing sting's son is an anagram for infant police?) i have officially become the tangent man! anyway, don't forget to recycle and go as green as you can, spread good vibes and i will try and do the same. cheerio amigos and amigas, -rusty www.myspace.com/rustyandersonmusic
