Set List critique

Age is not as big of a factor as you might think. I think smoking marijuana for many years is the true culprit. It has done irreparable damage to Paul McCartney's voice. There are many singers in Macca's peer group who still sound like they did 30+ years ago: -Daryl Hall (will be 70 on his next birthday) -Sammy Hagar (68 years old -- sounds phenomenal!!) -Stevie Nicks (68 years old) -Tina Turner (76 years old)
Saw a video of Eric Clapton playing in Japan the other night (with Ed Sheeran sitting in) and Eric sounded fine. He just turned 71.

Add Billy Joel to that list. For me, I haven't seen Paul since 2014. There are 11 songs in this current setlist that I haven't heard yet, so I'm excited. Yes, I am a little irked that there were virtually NO solo additions. That's a little weird. With a Little Luck could've went in place of Here There and Everywhere on the piano, and he could've done HT&E in the acoustic set. The second half could've used a big shake up. I always thought Girls School would make a rockin encore song. Deep cut or not, it would get the place going. This could very well be my last time seeing him, so I'm going to savor it. I'll likely still have 6-7 more years of Bruce Springsteen shows, 20 years of U2 shows, a few more of Billy Joel (the residency is 30 mins from my house). But Paul, this could be it. On a visual level though, the show is spectacular. I think Out There was a massive shakeup because Paul rebounded from On the Run (which had minimal effects, boring setlists) with a new show with tons of new songs, and LED stage, lasers.... Out There and On the Run were two totally different shows. One on One is a slightly more modern Out There with a few shakeups. Regardless, I'm excited to see him, dreading this week of ticket sales. Hopefully luck will be in my favor.
Saw Billy Joel last December in Charlotte NC and he sounded great and put on fantastic show. He actually did a bit of "Hard Days Night" as a mashup with "River Of Dreams".

Absolutely right! He's definitely still got his chops: Eric Clapton and Ed Sheeran - I Will Be There. Live in Tokyo Budokan April 13 2016:

Yep, Eric sounds fine. Eric did more drinking maybe? Moral to the story? (if you need your voice)

Seen Billy 3x... Twice at MSG and once in a 350 seat venue for a one man show/masterclass last year... Paid $25 and sat in the second row... He did deep cut after deep cut by request... Got to meet him after it ended.
Here's a video from the event. He is still in fantastic voice at 66 (will be 67 in May). -

Maybe he also tailors the song to his voice, instead of trying the opposite.

Billy Joel often intersperses "AHDN" or Sly & The Family Stone's "Dance To The Music" (or any other random oldie in the key of G) after the bridge to "River Of Dreams."

Most definitely. But I don't think Eric did any high vocals even back in the Cream days. Did he?

Yeah, it's funny...I never really thought of Eric as a "singer" until his later years!

"Strange Brew" is pretty high. Also, on Clapton's '98 Pilgrim album, he hit some sweet falsetto notes on "Fall Like Rain" (one of the best tracks of his entire career, by the way ). The man can sing his ass off. His vocals on the old blues standard "It Hurts Me Too" are epic! (listen to the '97 Hyde Park version). And Clapton's duet with Babyface ("Change The World") displays the kind of vocal control and fluidity that easily makes him one of the greats. It's not all about range. In fact, McCartney sounds at his worst today when he's using the lower register of his voice.

Thanks to Paul McCartney Official Site Concert Archives, I tried to make a list of EVERY SONG I had the opportunity to hear since my first Macca gig in 1989 ( I was then 16 years old ). Each different song I mean, so obviously Let It Be is listed once but I hear it every time. So here is the complete list : Figure Of Eight Jet Rough Ride Got To Get You Into My Life Band On The Run Ebony And Ivory We Got Married Maybe I'm Amazed The Long And Winding Road The Fool On The Hill Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Good Day Sunshine Can't Buy Me Love Put It There Hello Goodbye reprise Things We Said Today Eleanor Rigby This One My Brave Face Back In The USSR I Saw Her Standing There Twenty Flight Rock Coming Up Let It Be Ain't That A Shame Live And Let Die Hey Jude Yesterday Get Back Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End Eight Days A Week Save Us Listen To What The Man Said Temporary Secretary Let Me Roll It Foxy Lady Paperback Writer My Valentine Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five I've Just Seen A Face We Can Work It Out Another Day Hope For The Future And I Love Her Blackbird Here Today New Queenie Eye Lady Madonna All Together Now Michelle Lovely Rita Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite! Something Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Another Girl Hi Hi Hi Helter Skelter Hello Goodbye Junior's Farm All My Loving Drive My Car Sing The Changes The Night Before Come And Get It San Francisco Bay Blues I Will Dance Tonight Mrs Vandebilt I've Got A Feeling A Day In The Life Give Peace A Chance The Word All You Need Is Love She Loves You snippet Day Tripper Magical Mystery Tour Only Mama Knows Flaming Pie Got To Get You Into My Life Highway (I Want To) Come Home My Love And I Love Her You Won't See Me She's A Woman In Spite Of All The Danger All Things Must Pass Yellow Submarine I'll Follow The Sun For No One Calico Skies Penny Lane Jam Massage (Beautiful Paris) Lady Madonna Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band / The End Getting Better Lonely Road Driving Rain Your Loving Flame Every Night You Never Give Me Your Money Let 'Em In She's Leaving Home Birthday Looking For Changes Peace In The Neighbourhood Off The Ground Robbie's Bit (Thanks Chet) Good Rockin' Tonight I Lost My Little Girl Ain't No Sunshine Hope Of Deliverance Biker Like An Icon Here, There And Everywhere C'mon People Magical Mystery Tour Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Two or three are missing, maybe. But on my count, I had the opportunity to hear 121 different songs since 1989. And 2016 will be my 9th Macca gig. Not too bad I think, given the fact that people in their 70's who have seen the four Beatles between 1963 and 1966 have heard...let's say.... 15 songs ?.... 2016 will be my 9th gig. To this day I spent more than 24 hours with Paul McCartney.

That would be one insanely long show LOL j/k.

First I think we are all grateful that Paul is still touring as frequently as he is. With that being said the setlist is somewhat of a let down based on the MPL press release announcing this tour and only based on that. I am glad the "New" songs are still in. Still going to as many shows as I can
-
As a person who will not attend ANY shows, I suppose I really should not be saying what he should play or not play! Play what you want, Paul!
-
As a person who is not attending this particular tour, as well, what he plays or doesn't play absolutely influences that decision.
