Set List critique
-
It's frustrating that he trots out soundcheck songs like Coming Up, Bluebird, I'll Follow The Sun, Letting Go, etc...etc...but isn't prepared to shuffle them in and out of shows at the expense of Eleanor Rigby and Let Me Roll It. The latter which made a friend remark, "...is he STILL doing Let Me Roll It at each concert?" And that was on the 2004 Euro tour!!! In Paul's mind taking San Francisco Bay Blues out of soundcheck and into the setlist for Candlestick Park (which he will do), is a major surprise.

I don't think Something is ever going away. Sometimes it gets the loudest audience singalong of the night besides Hey Jude.
-
Yeah "Something" isn't going anywhere. I personally don't want it to. I personally love the transition in the song. I can't think of anything to replace it. Now if he wanted to do two tributes to George, like he does for John, he could maybe play "All Things Must Pass" after "Something". That's just a suggestion... I'm just a little tired of everyone complaining about the setlist. Everything flows really well now and I'm sure he wants to keep the flow. I can't see him wanting to add anything that could completely mess everything up. I'm happy with the setlist for now and I wish some others would be too. Don't get me wrong I would love to see changes, but I'm not going to sit and complain about it. I think we all should just enjoy what we got. Hell the man's 72 we should be glad he's still doing large scale tours.

" Set list is wonderful if you have never seen him before or maybe one other time. It is also great if you don't care about anything he has done since the 80's. The people who "complain" are people who love Mr. McCartney's entire career and would love to hear more of the music that they have spent money on by buying his recent CD's. Also, someone like myself is not going to spend over $100 a ticket to see him for the 8th time if I am basically going to see concert that I have heard at least 80% of the music and the same stories. I am not knocking people who love his set list and can repeatedly see him but I am just not one of them anymore.

I have seen him many many times. It's funny at this last soundcheck ( Chicago ),the group at our table started a talk about this forum & all the complaining about the setlist,We all came to the conclusion, if you don't want to see all these songs everytime, Why go? Just so you can come on here & complain? I have been a fan of these songs since they came out & it's always a treat for me to see them sung in person...again. IMO the Sgt.Pepper songs & E.Rigby could be replaced with something solo, but he's doing what HE wants to do,he's not going to do songs he no longer wants to sing. No one around me seemed bored with the songs, great mix of ages,we all had a great time ! :

A Beatle has dumbed-down his own audience. Epic.
-
^ yes. And it's not that we don't enjoy the show when we are there in person...it's just that he has soooooooooo much more to offer than 50 year old songs. I love them all & sang my fool head off at the concert BUT I'd love for all the people to appreciate his later years. Can you imagine how proud he'd be if he got the same reaction to some of his solo stuff? Well...it is his own fault since he never promotes it. So what a Beatles person to do? And...aren't any of the Beatles songs (that he already sings) tributes to his mates?

wow...you all must havce been complaining about me then. LOL! He is not necessarily singing what he wants...well it is...but you know what I mean. It's what the people are familiar with. Where I was seated there were a bunch of Wings fans & these guys in front of me were goin NUTS for those songs.

I am not dumb Wow
-
I don't think Audi meant that at all.
-
I didn't mean to insult anyone. I withdraw the comment However, I am so disappointed that some, among the one audience who should have the highest of standards, have become so complacent.

After my 14th McCartney show last night in Chicago, I have to say it is time for a major setlist (and entire show) shakeup for Paul. The show is just getting really boring I am sad to say. All My Loving, Let Me Roll It, The Long and Winding Road, Lady Madonna, Eleanor Rigby, Something, Here Today, Band on the Run, Back in the USSR, Let It Be and Hey Jude have been played to death and, sadly, need to go. It seemed last night that most people there were bored during these songs....people actually seemed to enjoy the new songs more (probably because they have not heard them played so many times.) The same jokes and stories need to go...the entire 100% prearranged show needs to go....the same lame videos for each song need to go. The only real memory of last night for me was my 9 year old jamming out to Helter Skelter (I got blisters on my fingers!) which he loves from Beatles Rock Band!

I have bought every single he put out in the late-'80s, all of the '90s albums and CD-singles, all of the 2K albums and CD-singles... ...isn't it understandable that I am frustrated that I hear virtually NONE of them when I attend the man's concerts? I've seen him five times.

It is perfectly understandable and I feel your "pain" - lol. How much of the audience probably has not bought something of Mr. McCartney's since the 70's. IMO - I don't think Mr. McCartney really has high opinion of his solo work. He will play songs from "New" but that it a marketing thing. Think back and how many songs does Mr. McCartney play live from solo records once it is not the current CD. Does he ever tell a story about one of his recent records in concert - lol. In the end Mr. McCartney is going to get what he deserves. He will go down in history as a great singer/songwriter but the past 30 yrs of his career will be ignored which is a shame.

I understand everyone's point, but we all know that Paul is appealing to first timers of seeing him and of seeing him on the tour. Don't get me wrong I'd love for him to throw "Best Friend", "Angry", "Get Out of My Way", "If You Wanna", "Young Boy", "About You", "Ever Present Past" , "Put It There", and so on. I just think it's probably best to just accept the fact that these songs aren't going to be played. It's sounds like he has no interest in them and the band seems to only influence a spot on the set that lasts one tour. Don't get me wrong I would love to say those statements about his shows being a journey through his Beatles past, Wings Days, and SOLO career to be true, but I just don't ever see it happening. ...and I will say this, get rid of "Eleanor Ribgy" for the love of god, it's for sure the low point of the show.

Completely agree. I believe Paul has the biggest case of musical misjudgment there is. This is a thought that goes through my head almost every time I listen to his unreleased stuff. I personally think it may be him trying to compete with what he did with The Beatles.

Well...we do this every time. Everytime I go I LOVE the show. And I did in Chicago. BUT as I always say...I feel let down that he does not have enough faith in his solo career to amaze us with playing more of it for us. I'm watching a Denny Laine interview on DVD right now & he speaks about Wings & says how they always wanted to move forward. Paul did not want to live in the past. Sometimes I just laugh out loud. BUT...I guess that is where the BIG money is...especially after Rockband & all the reissues.

Paul doesn't (nor should he) do shows for the people who have seen him 14 times. He does shows for people, like a good friend of mine in Pittsburgh Monday, who are fulfilling a dream and going for the first time. Imagine going to your first McCartney show and NOT hearing Hey Jude, Let it Be, All My Loving, etc. These are the kinds of threads I actually despise. Sure it's fun to debate and have an opinion. And are there songs in his stable that I would love to see live? Absolutely. But I am also not naive enough to think he's going to swap out Hey Jude for This One anytime soon.

But why should he be doing his shows for the 1st timers? I don't get that reasoning either. I would just like the entire careeer represented. That's all. Maybe 5 songs a decade. LOL...never gonna happen...I know.
