Support music in schools
My name is Loren Simpson and I reside in Horizon City, Texas which is an outlying city in El Paso, Texas. I am currently the Vice President of the Horizon High School Band Boosters Association for our High School and Junior High Schools. Music in our community is a very integral part of keeping our children off of the streets and out of trouble. This past year our Band has performed magnificently, winning several competitions in our area but this year we are in serious need of help. Our community is very small and not as financially established as a lot of other school communities in our area. Parents are just not as capable of spending money as I am fortunate enough to be able to do for my children. Although we have instruments, they are almost all in need of repair or needing to be replaced. Also, in order for our entire Band to perform at the highest level possible, we must get them to competitions which allow them that opportunity. As a retired and disable veteran, you can believe I am not a man to ask for a handout and believe that hard work is the key to any success but this is not something I ask for myself. I am asking for our children who are currently in Band and for those that will continue to join in the future. We need serious assistance in making their lives in Band as fulfilling as it can be. In that, we need 2 things more than anything else. We need a vehicle in which to transport our equipment and we need capital in order to breathe and get a steady foundation. We have been fighting month after month to get enough cash just to pay our directors. The two things I mentioned we need the most, first a truck. Moving company trucks work the best for our needs for easier loading and unloading. The second thing we need as I stated is capital to get ourselves going so we are not scrambling in order to just make the minimum to pay directors. In order for our band to stay competitive, we need serious help from the world wide community that wishes to support music in schools. First and foremost I am not writing to you in order to get anyone to help alone. No, my main objective in this letter is one, gain some support for the remarkable kids who honestly in this area have very little to keep them off of the streets, out of trouble with teen pregnancy, off of drugs, and get them moving in a direction that can make a difference in their lives. The second thing I am hopeful for is, well, spreading the word through the music industry in order for us to gain more support from role model musicians. I want to thank you for taking just a few minutes to read this letter and in the future I truly hope to hear from you. With my most sincere thanks, Loren Simpson Vice President, Horizon High School Band Boosters Association
