CharlieD, if you love noise rock then I'm thinking you must like the new Fireman track. Paul has never done anything like it, in fact it makes Helter Skelter sound like a ballad. This guy ain't ready for the old rocking chair just yet!!!!

........one of the most successful bands of the 70s! You better believe they were good, real good!!
You hit the nail on the head. McCartney's work in the 1970's was incredible.

. The difference is Sting embraces his solo work and by doing so the audience does also. Granted, Paul does not have the opportunity to get the Beatles together again but even if he could I don't believe he would change.
Sting has a very limited fan base compared to Paul McCartney, not even close. The average Joe on the street would be hard pressed to name even 6 Sting songs (including The police songs). As a result he is afforded a lot of latitude with his set list since there is only a couple songs that people would expect to hear him perform. And none of those songs come close to Paul's standards.

Why wouldn't McCartney do a song like I've Had Enough, he's performed it before? I don't count out any song, because he's performed even more obscure material than Girlschool (which was a single). If he can pull out something as totally unknown as In Spite Of All The Danger, he can do any of the songs I've suggested!
In Spite Of All Danger is a cool little song that was presented on tour in 2004 (I think) as a tribute to George. I have no problem with that.

Yankeefan7, every time I've seen McCartney the crowd sings along with BOTR, also I agree that the crowds may listen more when McCartney performs his new material, but there's no mass exit! Some give the impression that hundreds and hundreds of people take a break whenever McCartney performs anything besides the Beatles, and that's just not true! Again, if McCartney would perform the best of his Wings and solo material, songs like Juniors Farm, No More Lonely Nights, 1985, Silly Love Songs, etc. Songs that many people in reviews, columns, articles, comments, and on many different websites have been asking for, the crowds would be thrilled and no one would be going anywhere! The non stop Beatle thing has become too predictable, and people are starting to say so!
I agree, I don't see people heading for the exits on non-Beatle songs. I do think there is a noticeable difference in reaction for the most part and that is understandble to a degree. I also agree if he did some of the songs you have mentioned which were top 10 hits with Wings some people would enjoy them. ( I definitely would) I have said this numerous times before but I think most people are Beatle fans that attend his concerts whereas you and I are McCartney fans. The Beatle fans love McCartney but Beatle songs are all they care to hear. There is a minority (is it growing?) that are McCartney fans and would love to hear his whole career represented in concert. I love the Beatle songs as much as anybody but if McCartney only did 15 Beatle songs in a concert I would not be disappointed. I happen to think his last two records have been some of his best work ever and would love to hear it live. Also, Wings records were all big sellers so I don't understand not playing more songs from that period of his career. BTW - I have seen Sting several times on his solo tours and he throws in a few Poilice songs but most of the show is his solo work and the crowd loves it. Finally, it is nice that McCartney has done something different like "Mrs. Vanderbilt" on these one time shows. I only hope if he tours again, he spices it up a little more.
The difference with Sting is, when he wants to play the Police songs, he just gets that band together and they go out on tour. In the 1970's Paul ignored the Beatles catalogue except for a few classic songs, in favour of his new band, Wings. During the 1980's he never toured, unfortunately. Finally in 1989/1990 he began performing again and by then things had changed and he decided to fully embrace The Beatles music. Lets not forget, Wings generally received abysmal reviews throughout the 1970's. The press were quite unkind to Paul and belittled his solo work every chance they could get. No wonder he became a little gun shy, and stuck more with the Beatle songs on tour. And now, it is hard for him to replace some of those songs from his setlist, because he hears and sees people just going nuts when he plays anything by The Beatles, so of course he is going to keep doing it. Sure there might be a handful in the audience who aren't that enthralled, but they are such a small minority they don't even register. When you have 50,000 people screaming and singing along, quite frankly who cares about the dozen or so who aren't digging it? I've read some saying that Paul should play songs such as Getting Closer, I've Had Enough, etc...... but those songs weren't even big hits in the 1970's when they were released, so he's never going to play them, not ever, and to think he will is wishful thinking. I can see him eventually doing Listen To What Man Said again, or re-visitng Silly Love Songs or Goodnight Tonight, but songs like Big Barn Bed or Girls School(someone mentioned those two) are never going to be performed live. If he's going to tinker with his setlist he isn't going to be including lesser known Wings songs. Now, I totally agree about Juniors Farm, it is time to dust off that old rocker and introduce it to the masses.

Imagine the show has been going along, and then the lights go down at the back of the stage a huge Wings emblem lights up and McCartney comes stepping out with the Rickenbacher and all you hear are the opening riffs to the song I've Had Enough and then McCartney and his band rip thru a 10 song rocking set of Wings classics! I think the crowds would go crazy and be totally thrilled!
Now that would be awesome!!!! I love that idea. Hey, you need to somehow get this email sent to the man himself.

If people still have thoughts about it or for that matter still want to discuss it, what's the big deal? This is the appropriate place for it! How many times has someone said they think McCartney is fantastic? would you tell them ok stop don't say that anymore you've said that already? Every single thread on this forum has someone saying that! Also we don't know when and if someone new might want to share their thoughts. Also I'm not going to assume what McCartney will read and what McCartney will think! I'm more optimistic, who knows what could happen. This is his official website, he just might take a peek and think hmmm! How do we know he hasn't already?
Paul....please play "No More Lonely Nights"!!!! One of the greatest love songs of the 1980's, in my opinion. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to throw in a couple of those great "Flowers In the Dirt" tracks again, like "My Brave Face", or "Put It There".

I haven't been on this site for a while, and I CANNOT believe this thread is still going with the same old stuff being said!! : Sorry if i'm being out of order, but has it not all been said before?! Months ago, since the day after the Liverpool gig, all this was being said, we all know what people think. Paul is not going to read this thread and think, oh well, if that's how some people think, i'll better rethink my setlist. Paul will always play the songs he always has, and that's that. Goodnight.

Linka, I didn't even think of that connection, I was just listing songs that hadn't been done to death and that I thought people would like. Now that you make me think of it, it does apply! Why don't you think McCartney would do some of these songs? He performs more obscure songs than any of the ones I listed?
I love that you included "The Mess" because that is one of my all-time favorite Wings songs. I just love the energy of that recording.

I fogot to include No More Lonely Nights, so I went back and added it, it's one of McCartney's best ever and he should be performing it.
Very true......and sadly overlooked. I have incredibly fond memories of that song and seeing it played on MTV over and over in 1984/85. Beautiful song, one that should definitely be included into any concert he gives. It evokes everything that was good about 80's music.

Here's a setlist I think would please the veteran as well as the newcomer. This is the type of setlist that would represent every phase of McCartney's career. Equal Beatles, Wings, and Solo. I've Had Enough Getting Closer All My Loving Take It Away The World Tonight One Of These Days Somebody Who Cares That Was Me 1985 Only Love Remains Long And Winding Road Got To Get You Into My Life Silly Love Songs Young Boy Maybe I'm Amazed My Love The Mess Get Back What It Is House Of Wax Listen To What The Man Said Big Barn Bed Can't Buy Me Love Sgt. Pepper Yesterday Let It Be Only Mama Knows Helter Skelter Rockestra Theme Hey Jude I Saw Her Standing There Birthday Encore Juniors Farm Hi Hi Hi Girlschool A very exciting hard rocking setlist filled with some of the very best from every phase of McCartney's awesome career!
Would have loved t0o have seen (and heard) a setlist like that one. problem is, at 66 years of age, not sure his vocal chords could sustain that type of enrgy.

my memory is that Elvis Costello did a whole tour that was set by audiance members turning a Wheel of Fortune on stage to pick the next song. Cheers mate.
Can you imagine that???? That would be so awesome. Of course it would have to be in a smaller setting, which is conducive to the artists you mentioned, but not so easy for Paul to do. And that's the downside of being so massively popular, an artist loses that intimacy with the audience. That is why his unplugged album was so cool to listen to, and featured alot of obscure songs and cover tunes.

I have been happy to see Macca the past few tours playing the same set list, but would love, love LOVE to see a completly new one. I saw Paul Weller last night, he did 4 Jam songs and 1 Style Council song, he, like Macca has 30 years of songs he could play, and plays mostly from his most recent releases, not saying Macca should but a more steady rotation would keep it fresh. I think Macca thinks of it more like a show than a concert. The Who are equally guilty of this repetition in set lists. So with that, my ultimate for now Macca set list, no Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let it Be, or Live and Let Die, and Wings and Beatles are equal, and I think it reflects his music pretty well. I have it at 36 songs, might be a bit high, and a bit light on the more recent releases. Still love Flamming Pie the best of the recent releases...this is a set list he would never play, oh well. I like it. Juniors Farm I Saw Her Standing There Hi Hi Hi Night Before May Be I'm Amazed Oh Darling Uncle Albert I've Just Seen A Face My Brace Face Ob La De Ob La Da My Love Maxwell Silver Hammer Band on the Run She Loves You Pipes of Peace Can't Buy Me Love Calico Skies She's A Woman Beautiful Night And I Love Her Silly Love Songs I Will English Tea Penny Lane Another Day Back In the USSR Jet Paperback Writer With A Little Luck Hello Goodbye Rockshow Sgt. Peppers (not the reprise) That Was Me Get Back Take it Away Got To Get You Into My Life
I like your setlist, but you can't compare Paul Weller to Paul McCartney. Weller has had how many bona fide hits that the average person on the street can actually name? Maybe one, and even that's debatable, "Town Called Malice". And I loved The Jam, and as good as they were, they never wrote a single standard, McCartney has written dozens and dozens of standards that have become part of our culture. (i.e., Yesterday, Let It Be, Long And Winding Road, Live And Let Die, Got To Get You Into My Life, Hey Jude, Penny Lane, Here There & Everywhere, Band On The Run.......and the list goes on and on).

DavidP, here's part of the review of McCartney's Glastonbury performance by Tom Bishop of BBC news. Don't want you to think that I'm just making it up. Tom Bishop His purple suit and red shirt were plain in comparison to the Spice Girls dress and furry tail worn earlier by Glastonbury performers PJ Harvey and Alison Goldfrapp respectively. But Sir Paul has an unrivalled pop history to leaf through, and sing-alongs Penny Lane, Lady Madonna and Yellow Submarine kept most of the rain at bay. Younger festival goers showed a healthy disrespect for Sir Paul, in the same way that the Beatles once poked fun at authority. Yet no amount of heckling could persuade him to perform A Hard Day's Night or The Frog Chorus, and shouts of "boring" did nothing to silence Sir Paul's drawn-out Beatles anecdotes. McCartney really needs to change his setlist!
Um, yeah, that doesn't prove your point at all. It says "festival-goers". Not "fans". Sweet reading skills buddy.
Grasping at straws to make a point.

Just watched the clips from McCartney's show at Anfield. hmmm.....I wonder, does thousands of people singing along with Paul McCartney on Hey Jude, Live And Let Die and Let It Be constitue groaning???? Boy, they sure weren't having a good time from what I could tell. I mean, how could anyone possibly have a good time singing their lungs out. : I think certain individuals on here need to stop trying to distort the truth. Just enjoy the show for goodness sake.

DavidP, that's just it, people are starting to groan when he plays those songs!
I've read quite a few of the left hand man rantings on this topic, but this comment destroys any shred of credibility for him. From here on I'll just skip over his comments.
I was at Anfield, and the groans were very audible when he launched into Long and Winding Road, C-Moon, Let Me Roll It... I saw it first hand. It is happening.
That's just bull.
With all respect I was there seated in the Kop, and the groans around me were real and they were AUDIBLE.
Oh please, we're not THAT stupid to believe your story.

DavidP, you and I agree on that, and that's exactly why I didn't attend McCartney's last tour, I wasn't going to pay good money to see the same basic show yet again! I have those concerts on DVD already. There's absolutely no excuse for McCartney to play some obscure song when he has #1 hits that have never been performed. The core of McCartney's setlist has been the same for TWO DECADES, and he hasn't performed much of his Wings material during that period at all. The Wings material he has performed has been basically the exact same. How many tours have contained... Hey Jude All My Loving yesterday Sgt Pepper Let It Be Can't Buy Me Love I've Got A Feeling Good Day Sunshine Back In The Ussr Blackbird We Can Work It out The Fool On The Hill Eleanor Rigby The Long And Winding Road Lady Madonna I Saw Her Standing There The End Got To Get you Into My Life Get Back Birthday Drive My Car All he does is interchange these songs from tour to tour. He does a few from his most recent album, he may throw in one or two obscure songs, and maybe the tributes to John and George. All of that still leaves out #1 smash hits that have never been performed, just no excuse for that? Once again I've shared the evidence, his set list has basically been the same and there's absolutely no denying it!
Every one of those songs are classics. Some of the best songs ever written. I would fully expect him to play them. My only complaint is I wish he'd play a few more tunes from the 80's and 90's. Just 2 or 3 songs, like the incredible "No More Lonely Nights". I know he usually plays the terrific "Calico Skies", but would love if he'd include "The World Tonight" which I think is a brilliant song. But either way, it's all good, and lets face it his career is winding down (sad to say) but it's true. Best try and see him while we still can. A living legend. There aren't many left.
