Oh well. While it was cool that Paul sang with Ringo and that he actually did ONE obscure song, "Cosmically Conscious", at the Radio City show, the rest of his set was about as currently relevant as a Gary Puckett and the Union Gap concert.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
[quote="paulfan4ever"]I have had the pleasure of seeing him twice and I will agree that this is the most outlandish thread that I have seen on here yet. Calling him an oldies act made me mad... x I think that it is a f**k thing mixing all the eras together.. I still love Paul no natter what.... D I started this thread months ago in response to what I thought was a very standard, by the numbers concert in Liverpool. I can't believe people are still debating and upset by this thread. Get a life!

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
[That being said, I'd now like to address the original post... Jorke3344, I agree with a lot of what you said. As I wasn't one of the lucky few who got to make it to one of Paul's "Secret Shows", I'd love to hear him sing "That Was Me" or "Only Mama Knows." I'd love to hear him do the "Golden Slumbers" medley off Abbey Road or even "Kansas City/ Hey, Hey, Hey". I'd love to hear him do "Every Night" or his version of "Summertime" off the Choba B CCP album. I could do without hearing "Dance Tonight" or "Jet" or even "Blackbird." And I could especially do without him singing "CMoon." He does play a lot of the same songs over and over and has been doing so for years. Yes. And it can get a little... for lack of a better word... old. You're right. But, there are two sides to every coin. My first time seeing him in concert was in 2005. And I can tell you right now, I would have been SO disappointed if he hadn't done some of these same songs just because others who have seen him in concert numerous times, were tired of them. I would have died had he not done "Yesterday" or "My Love" or "Let it Be." For me, "Let it Be" was the ultimate... I sat there and cried because I could just picture him, with his long black hair and beard, sitting at his piano, things with the Beatles falling apart all around him, singing "when the broken-hearted people, living in the world agree, there will be an answer..." He's Paul McCartney, man. You mustn't forget that. A living legend. So, yeah he sings the same songs over and over and yeah it can be pretty repetitive and "unoriginal" as you put it. But, at the same time, you know that's what you were getting when you go to one of his shows... or listen to it... or watch it on television or the computer. If you don't want to hear "The Long and Winding Road" or "Hey Jude," then don't. But there's someone out there who has never had a chance to see Macca play "I Saw Her Standing There" live, and for them it will be the experience of a lifetime. And those people are the people Paul is catering to. And I can appreciate that. Thank you and goodnight! lol Donna, Very articulate point of view on what many people might look for in a Paul McCartney concert. I can appreciate how someone who has never been to one of his shows before would absolutely love his performance in Liverpool. However, that doesn't mean he still couldn't make those fans happy by performing a couple of those classic staples, while still bringing some new "surprises" to concertgoers who have or haven't seen him before. Let Me Roll It performed on every tour?!? Good grief.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
Glad to see some spirited and intelligent debate going on about this topic (I was a little worried there for awhile roll ). I can understand the POV of some that say the Liverpool show was a "Special Event" that might have warranted a very standard standard show (which is very different than the blind followers who will accept anything). But for the majority of us who have seen one, or even more, shows on every one of his tours, a change of pace is extremely necessary (especially with the extremely high cost of concert tickets). A lot of good suggestions here. The question is will we know if Paul is willing to "mix it up" before he goes on his next extended tour (and before tickets go on sale). I'm hoping and guessing that he WILL refresh the song list.

For those of you who cannot take any criticism of Paul McCartney, I suggest that you get a life. Thank you By the way, his version of the Hippy Hippy Shake was great.

He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice.? Albert Einstein I'm facinated that you have posted this quote. Have you actually thought about what Mr. Einstein was suggesting with such a quote?

[quote="nellie apple"] Insanity! Forcing the 66 years old to do something, which he doesn't want to do! 99.99 of his fans adore his music and love him the way he is! So, please don't push so hard because everything you are hope for would only go to the trash bin. People would only blame Paul if his concert at Liverpool Sound were a flop! Not a fan! What you are describing is not a fan, but more like a stalker.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
[quote="yankeefan7"][quote="left hand man"]First off let me say this, the setlist was very appropriate for a celebration of Liverpool. I can understand McCartney dragging out the same old Beatle songs, but that's as far as it goes! My following comments are in regards to his regular tours and his upcoming tour. It's way way way past time that McCartney changed his setlist! I have been sharing this point of view for years. It's always going to be someones first time seeing McCartney, does that mean that the man has to perform the same basic set of songs for the rest of his life? He's given all the Beatle heads the last twenty plus years, it's not his fault if someone wasn't able to see the shows! Paul McCartney is much more than just a freaking Beatle, he has one of the most amazing careers of any artist! There's just no excuse to play the exact same songs year after year after year. This man has hits from every decade since the 60s and he should be performing them! A whole generation of people came up listening to Wings, in fact they were the biggest group of the 70s, and that's documented fact! How many artist have #1 hits that they've never ever performed live? I find it absolutely amazing that anyone wouldn't want this man to perform as much of his fantastic music as humanly possible?? Yes it's time for Paul McCartney to seriously change his setlist, I'd hate for him to look back on his career and think Woulda, shoulda, coulda. The Beatles have been done, redone, and overdone! Let's all e-mail his guitarist Brian Ray and let him know how we feel. I mention him because I e-mailed him and he answered me back, so he does listen to the fans, and he does share info with McCartney. This upcoming tour will determine a lot as far as McCartney being just an old nastalgia act. If he drags out the same old songs yet again, it will be a shame because Paul McCartney can and should do better!! Fans should expect more. Mr. McCartney stop selling yourself and your music short! I totally agree with you. I wonder what a setlist would be like if he let the band pick all the songs. I bet Brian, Rusty, Abe and Wix would like something diferent to play also. I think the band was the ones who got him to do "Too Many People" on the last tour. I don't think it is too much to ask for him to change at least 10-15 songs with different ones considering the length of his total career. He could start out by doing MAF songs beside "Dance Tonight", things like "Only Mama Knows" and "House of Wax" (these were done on promtional tours of MAF and very ferw people saw those shows). Beatle songs like "Rocky Racoon" and "Oh Darling" could replace Beatle songs that have been played to death. Instead of "Jet" all the time, do something like "Helen Wheels" from "BOR". Throw out "Letting Go" and "C Moon" and do "Juniors Farm" and "Old Siam Sir". Finally, everyone understands you have to do the "hits' but think McCartney needs to really understand that people appreciate his whole career not just the Beatles and even Wings. Good to see that some McCartney fans care enough to challenge his work, rather than blindly accept anything he does.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
[quote="DennyC"]Jorke, to say Paul is lazy and going thru the motions, is incorrect. You may not like the song choices and you are entitled to your opinions. However, he goes all out for every performance and it always feels like an intimate evening. This is not about being lazy, it's about what he feels the majority of each audience wants to hear. Believe it or not, the people who go to multiple shows (I am one of them) are not the majority. There are actually many people who have never seen him. Not one of the people who were actually at the show or any of his recent shows have said, he was lazy or going though the motions. Neither have any of the reviews. These classic songs have been called anthems, because people love to sing along with him. I don't know about you, but everytime I hear Let It Be, whether it's live, my cd or on the radio, I get a chill up my spine. he may ask his back up band for suggestions, but this is his show and his reputation on the line, good or bad, they songs will always be his choices. Denny C, Fair enough. Your point of view is certainly a valid one. As far as the childish responses from others, oh well.

RE: Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.
By the way, I've been a McCartney fan for a very long time (and have every one of his albums, singles, etc.). So, I have every right to criticize what sounds to me like someone going through the motions. If you want to spend $150 or $250 dollars to see the same old show with absolutely nothing original to it, that is well within your rights. However, I'm very disappointed in his performance and will not spend that kind of money to see the same thing over and over again. By the way, all it would take is to throw in 5 or 6 different songs to give--as Paul likes to say--value for money. This show seemed VERY unoriginal and lazy to me.
