Just an introduction
I’ve been a fan since Ed Sullivan, but I guess I always took it for granted, like a background program that just hums along, and you don’t notice it.
I heard about Paul spending time with Jimmy Buffett before he passed. I was struck by gratitude. So many of us admired Jimmy and loved his work, and it seemed as if Paul was a stand-in for all of us who loved and admired him. It felt like a mitzvah on behalf of us all.
A few nights ago, I was outside, looking at the moon, and it reminded me of a song on an album Paul produced—“The moon is like a boat, my love’ a lemon peel, afloat. My love; and with a sail of gauze, my love; she seems to slightly pause, upon her silent way, upon her starry way.” And I thought, “That boat has a new captain. Couldn’t be a better one.”
It struck me how much I’ve internalized the soul that Oaul put into what he did, I was 9 in 1063, and I played the Beatles records endlessly, waiting anxiously for the next one to come out. At such an impressionable age, I internalized so much of Paul (and John’s) work. Their influence on me is immeasurable. I am what Paul, then in his twenties, made me, I think just as much as my parents did. I feel forever grateful for his work and his care.
