Well, guess what It's that time of the year when this couch potato drags himself reluctantly outside to address certain issues that cannot wait longer. After the longest dryest winter for ages it has now turned to rain, but before the deluges set in I did get time to drag the beast from the garden shed and whip it into submission. To paraphrase a well known song; The first cut is the deepest" and this year I completely abandoned trying to harvest the cuttings allowing them to lie on the surface uncollected. It certainly sped things along fine. Sadly - I have public areas - amongst the long grass some passing youth had discarded a metal bar -(why a youth? I don't know really but they seem to be always around and handy to blame ) - and the mower blade unerring found it and ground to a halt with an almight bang. Once the bar was found and removed the motor fires again fine but my mower is now limping along as a three-wheeler. one of the wheels was smashed off by the bar as it took flight. Still I persevered and first cut is over - luckily a couple of sunny days dried up the cutting fine (and the following squally weather has redistributed them elsewhere ) This is where I make my usual solemn vow to cut fortnightly avoiding the need to gather clippings - vows are meant to be broken - yes? there like new year resolutions aren't they? The weather has turned again and the attraction of visiting the usual car boots for bedding plants is not so tempting - fortunately my local supermarket placed a bedding plant display in it's foyer with a 3 for the price of 2 deal - making each tray of bedding plants £2 each. I don't think the car boot would be much cheaper. Those I put out this morning and now I have to pray that the weather turns milder - we've been having very late frosts as the weather is showery with breaks in the cloud so the overnight temp keep dropping down to frosty conditions..... Usually it's the slugs and snails that I fret over, but they still seem to be wrapped up in their duvets waiting warmer weather. I'll place on record here the plant types, so I have a reference point later this year - the useful informative tickets will be long gone by then. I have: Lobelia Fountain (Mixed) Begonia Nightlife Red Petunia Frenzy (Mixed) Geranium Horizon White. Having scrubbed my green fingers back to their usual pinkness it's back to my couch for the remainder of the day - Formula 1 from Bahrain - of course I'm only watching to disapprove of the cynical disregard of the local political situation and human rights abuses of the local leadership. Then the World Snooker Championships day 2 of 17 couch potato heydays. Fortunately the rainclouds are imminently due to roll in again which will ensure any on-going enthusiam for gardening is promptly extinguished Better just visit eBay to search for a replacement mower wheel.... The bush has gone getting ready for the summer

Maybe I don't really want to know, how your garden grows...
-
I have some weeds that do such a good job at imitating the flower or plant or bush that they are next to ..... that I don't want to pull them .... because it may be the good thing in the garden and not the weed ..... sneaky things.

Always lovely to see this thread bumped... Our flowering plum tree was stunningly beautiful this year! The bluebells beneath continue to spread further into the grass with each passing year. Wisteria and the heavenly scent of lilacs currently in full bloom. Our rose garden began blooming early this year with lovely red roses.

I love this time of year. Spent the morning buying some new plants and this afternoon planting them. Put in a new flower bed with a hydrangea, a couple of rhododendrons and 5 azaleas. It looks beautiful right now but I'll need to add some summer blooming plants for interest later in the summer. It's mostly in the shade with just a little morning sun. Does anyone have any suggestions?

At least 5 of my trees have died. Emerald ash borer. You are not supposed to move firewood yet they won't let me burn the branches. So the guy that picks up my branches will be spreading this bug to another town. Strange

We just had the remaining 3 huge maple trees that were being eaten on the inside by ants taken down before they fell & caused serious damage. Once the tree guy comes back to grind down the stumps, hubby has plans to put a big flag in the middle & we're going to surround it with plants. In the meantime, as soon as we get a day with no rain, my Easter flowers (pink hyacinths & pink mums) will be planted along with 3 Victorian primrose plants. And we'll be adding a new rose bush to our rose garden.
