KOTB charting

I just noticed that on last week's Billboard 200 chart KOTB moved up six notches, from #46 to #40. Unlikely to hold there, but still interesting: http://www.billboard.com/news/who-is-ringo-starr-trend-of-unaware-kids-1006485352.story#/charts/billboard-200?begin=21&order=position

From the latest From Whom The Bell Tolls at Paul's main site: "Paul smashed the US Billboard Jazz Chart hitting the Number One spot as well as reaching Number Five in the US Billboard 200. In the UK, Paul hit his highest album chart position in 15 years landing in the Top Three as well as securing Top Five positions all over the world, all the more remarkable given the fact that Paul didn't embark on an international promo tour around the release as other artists usually do. It's safe to say, in fact, that [KOTB] is a bona-fide smash." http://www.paulmccartney.com/web/guest/for-whom-the-bell-tells/-/blogs/for-whom-the-bell-tells-issue-18?_33_redirect=%2fweb%2fguest%2fhome&#p_33#top
Not exactly an unbiased source, mind you, but impressive nonetheless.
I guess lowering expectations and goals can make something look better than it actually is, I never thought i'd see the day when Macca fans would be doing somersaults over a minor chart No1, never mind at least the album entered most mainstream charts in a reasonable position we all seem to be caught up in chart positions at the moment with nothing being said about the music, is anyone listening to the album now or like me has KOTB been shelved? Just a thought.. For the next album, we should all buy it on the day of release, we could spread the word through other Macca sites, facebook, twitter etc, I'm pretty sure if we ALL done this Macca would claim top spot in quite a few countries.

Lazy was only stating some facts!! I'm surprised he wasn't told off for not having any multi-platinum albums the way I was for not having any No1 singles, maybe we shouldn't comment on anything regarding music since our opinions are tarnished because of our lack of chart success. One things for sure, CD sales are on the wane the world over but surely the demise of these sales are balanced out by digital downloads etc?? I take it digital downloads are counted alongside CD sales when the final figures are totted up? As for KOTB, its done as well as many of us expected, it entered most of the major charts in a reasonable position and on a whole gave Paul a nice little earner. Its not been the massive No1 in the US as many of our American cousins predicted it would be, Paul's more recent albums Chaos, Memory and E A imo are much better than KOTB yet these 3 classics also failed to reach the top spot, E A can be excused for not doing better because of lack of promotion and in some aspects Paul hiding under his Fireman guise. As Sir Guy Grand mentioned, Paul could release another classic but it wouldn't have people outside the Macca Legions buying it, those days are long gone, not only for Paul but for many of the other big hitters to. This fan club/board only makes up a small proportion of McCartney's worldwide fan base, I would guess many members still buy Paul's records, i'm surprised tho at the amount of older fans who continue to say they haven't heard this or that from Paul's unique back catalogue. (speech time) Lets all dig deep and spread the word in order the great one gets at least one more No1 album before he decides to call it a day, how fitting would it be if the new rock/pop album got to No1 50 years after the release of "Love Me Do" Amen
Nice post Robert.

You remember how when we first heard this album was really going to happen, we feared it would be the situation like Macca's movies: Him flexing his creative muscles doing a labor of love but it would be critically smashed and possibly by the fans too except for a cult following. many feared he'd be criticized for just following in the steps of Rod Stewart or Barry Manilow or Neil Diamond (who both also did similar albums. Neil's is fantastic as his own unique spin was put on a lot of those songs...singing Windmills of Your Mind very very slow). Instead, the album is doing much better then expected. The jazz shows I listen to all love the album plus the two original songs as well as the famaliar standards. I'm hearing a lot about the history of these songs as they are played on these shows.

Paul's album sales over the last 30 years have been mediocre to okay, which is a shame considering the quality of some of the recent material. It's even more galling when Adele's 21 album has just overtaken Dark Side Of The Moon to become the 7th best selling album in the UK ever, having sold over 4 million albums.

That's extremely depressing about Adele/Pink Floyd. Mediocrity/Ground Breaking innovation! I really don't understand peoples's taste anymore?!

im not really familure with her but i know shes a big girl with a good voice. to shift 7 million albums these days is actually a pretty amazing feat. okay give me the likes of 'pink floyd' any day,but surely all public levels of fairness and decency ended a 30 years ago when the likes of 'wacko sicko' was selling his 'filler' album by the multi multi millions.. the current record buisness is just as bad as it has been for almost 30 years in my book....genuine talent does not equate into sales units,it has been that way for some time...how else can you explain the likes of 'madonna' and 'wacko sicko' becoming legendary acts

its no secret i prefer Macca originals to covers, i never bought into Rods songbook stuff either, if i'm being honest, KOTB is not my type music, fair do's it may be a work of art for others, for me (apart from some songs) its go to sleep music.

If this were the first McCartney release since, say, Flaming Pie, then -- absolutely -- these numbers would be more disappointing. But this is yet another release from someone who has released album after album after album after album after album -- most of which are Gold/Platinum. I celebrate ALL successes of my idol -- from the minimal to the record-breakers. Success is success. I'll add that it is staggering that an artist Paul's age even has a record-deal in this tough market. He wouldn't have a deal if he didn't continue to move units. As the kids used to say in the 'hood: "Don't hate. Congratulate."

I don't see the point celebrating something I don't like, hence the none celebrations in some quarters, its good it charted well tho I do find it strange you celebrate album after album by Macca when you've already mentioned in the past you havent got them all, just sayin :

It is very impressive. Despite the commentary coming from Paul's "camp," nobody can call those chart positions "spin."
