The "Ram" Remaster Thread

Deluxe set I received had a bent corner. I'm a collector. It's on it's way back and Amazon customer service said new copy will be here tomorrow. Mono LP was ordered from Amazon and is to ship in June. 2 vinyl LP has shipped from UK.

The bonus track entitled Rode All Night is interesting. It is referred to by Denny Seiwell in the recent interview as being done AFTER a better version was hammered out by Paul on guitar and Denny on drums, only to discover that the recording engineer had missed taping it! They redid it but he says without the same amount of verve. The recent interview can be found on something called The Morton Report that lazydynamite88 has a long link to, found two pages back. Not sure how many of you have seen or read the Life magazine interview with Paul that came out in May of 1971. Pulled out my copy the other night and he talks about an ad lib piece that was done in the studio that he was pleased with only to discover that they had missed capturing it on tape. When it was redone, he said it was no longer an ad lib and thus didn't seem as powerful. This must be THAT song I first read about all those years ago. Great to finally hear it. EDITED UPDATE TO ABOVE....Just reading the Ram booklet, page 99 in the chapter entitled Ram Now confirms this, Rode All Night on this bonus CD is the second take of their ad lib, the more powerful first one unrecorded as the engineer let it slip away. Paul says it was a "post-lunch moment of madness."

RAM ON!

5th-beatle:
Does anyone know the recording dates for the two bonus tracks? Eat At Home - Smile Away Uncle Albert Jam
"Eat at Home / Smile Away" was recorded in the Netherlands on August 19, 1972. Sounds great live!

Well I did it - I splurged on the deluxe version (have yet to open it though)...alot of content inside though, with the standard album, the same bonus CD also included in the lesser expensive re-release, the mono version of Ram and Thrillington - as well as a bonus DVD. What's nice is that it also includes access to become a premium member, which I had not done yet...although it says for digital access only...my only question to that is,,,,does only mean I don't get a free tee shirt and other goodies which are sent to members who pay for the premium membership or are there other differences as well? The answers may be inside the box...but with a load of homework tonight, I'm going to wait until tomorrow to explore inside as well as sign up for the premium membership:-) Btw, this was 99 dollars at Best Buy, which is 9 dollars more expensive than going through Amazon (of course no shipping paid on my end:-)) but roughly 30 dollars cheaper than the advertised price at some other local retailers who are carrying this release. So I feel good about this purchase in terms of the quality of the deal...
-
So with this purchase, I'm now 'eyeballing' Wings Over America' as the next one that I might splurge on the full deluxe version, depending what's on it (although I was hoping that the DVD Rockshow would be included, but read something recently that indicated that this may not be the case...but rather Rockshow would be released on it's own)

Has anyone here noticed if their RAM remastered CD's are coming scratched and/or scuffed when they first open them up ? I bought the 2-CD Special Edition of 'RAM' and both CD's have been scratched twice when I've returned them to Best Buy. So I'm stuck with these scratched CD's. I don't think Paul would be happy knowing his fans are receiving defective CD's. A friend of mine bought the Deluxe Edition of 'RAM' and he said all 5 discs are scuffed when he bought his copy. Also, he said the previous three Deluxe ('McCartney I & II,' 'Band On the Run') editions were also all scratched and/or scuffed when he bought them. The problem is the faulty packaging that doesn't protect the CD's from the factory onward. It's too tight and restrictive. I tried contacting Concord in CA. but they didn't want to help me. Where can one complain so that we can have this problem resolved and we have unscratched discs. MPL London ?

The good thing about it is that Pitchfork is a very respected and critical site focused on indie music..

excellent review, I remember reading a long time ago that Paul's albums would be appreciated more in passing years, this certainly seems the case with his remasters so far, these positive reviews also prove how far ahead of the game Macca is.

This is fantastic. And about time. I think this bit is my favorite line:
What a lot of people thought they heard on "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey", and everywhere else on the album, is cloying cuteness. But it turns out you can say a lot of things-- things like "go f--k yourself" ("3 Legs"), "everything is f--ked" ("Too Many People"), and even "let's go f--k, honey" ("Eat At Home)"-- with a big, dimpled grin on your face.

Cracking review

The other great thing about the Pitchfork review is that little red label on the review that says "best new reissue." That's a nice seal of approval. FYI, there was another great review (reappraisal) of Ram in the Times (of London, not the New York Times). Unfortunately it's behind a pay wall. http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/arts/music/albumreviews/article3422734.ece But here's an excerpt I can post without getting into trouble (I hope):
Ram is an album I never listened to until the Nineties. Why would I have bothered? It had been critically panned and never figured in anyone?s retrospectives of the best Beatle solo albums. Then I found a copy of Back Seat of My Car - a single from Ram that failed even to make the UK Top 30 - and changed my mind. Here was a song to match anything on Abbey Road, with Paul flitting from flirtatious lover to bawling rocker on a multi-part epic. It was expansive and it was fun. The mind boggles that it wasn?t a hit. These days, Ram is regarded as a highpoint of McCartney?s solo catalogue, possibly second in line after Band on the Run.
The review also praises the Mono mix saying it has "a beautiful valve warmth to it."

still nothing in the post...... i shouldn't be too surprised, topspin have never delivered me anything on time.

Last summer, the DVD with Macca II had glue visible on the label side. I made the mistake of putting in the player anyway and it gunked up the player. Some of the glue even worked its way on to the play side of the disc, causing it to stall out mid-play. Had to use Goo-gone to finally get it removed from the disc as well as the player. Finally all cleared up. My Ram Deluxe is trouble-free,although they could have done a better job on the 100 page book, the binding is less than top grade.

Excellent review, worth printing out and keeping. There are so many reviews you can't say that about.

I haven't checked the DVD yet but is there anything from "Now Hear This"?? I've read there may be bits of it around. I love their silliness on all the adverts! I think there was a cd with all of them...

Now Hear This plays between some of the song selections when going through the DVD menu. In fact, it is this very snippet you posted from Youtube that ends with the bleating sheep.
