The "Ram" Remaster Thread
-
RAM is # 1 on the Billboard Catalog Album Chart , it's knocked Adele's "19 " album off the top spot

Received Ram deluxe box set today....WOW!! Well worth the wait. Really wetting my appetite for Wings Over America re-issue later this year...
-
I finally purchased the Deluxe Set - I had to get it. Used a $50 amazon gift card to put towards the set ( a birthday present for myself - which happens to be on the 45th Anniversary of Sgt. Pepper: June 1st)

My first time owning this album, and I think it excellent thus far! Listend to it 8-10 times so far. It's really good. It's a step up from the McCartney album of the previous year. The production and mix i think is really good for its time. Musically this album is great, I assume the critiscms of it when it was first released was because of Maccas apparent lyrical weakness. But the lyrics are mostly ok, even if they are throwaway in some of the songs. It's fun. I don't understand why Linda was harshly critisized for her vocals. Her backing vocals always lend a brilliant blend into the background and this is credit to her seeing as she wasn't a singer/musician beforhand. she has a signnature sound when you hear it in the Wings and some solo Macca stuff.
Good summing up from someone who has only just got into RAM, you're point about Linda being criticized is a understatement, she was slaughtered back then for her vocals while the squealing hyena (Yoko) on the other side of the pond seemed to get away with any criticism because John was flavour of the month, its only when you listen to albums such as Ram, London Town, Tug of War etc you begin to realise how much Linda is sorely missed.

Love Linda singing with Paul! I really do miss her voice in some of the songs...so deep & low, harmonizing with Paul. I can just imagine them rehearsing their vocals at home around the house.
I also miss her voice and think it was really lovely.... it went well with Paul's

Sir Guy Grand:

The Ram reissue debuted at No. 24 this week on the Billboard main chart. As I recall, the BOTR reissue debuted at No. 17 so this is great.
The 2010 reissue of Band On The Run debuted at # 29 on Billboard , so Ram as done better BOTR charted at # 17 on the UK chart . Ram (2012) enters the : German charts at # 29 French charts at # 30
Thanks! I knew I remembered No. 17 from somewhere. Wow, I can't believe Ram did so much better in the US than BOTR. That's great. I bet that Pitchfork review helped move quite a few copies -- to new fans, I hope! Pitchfork never even bothered to review the BOTR reissue, I assume because it's such a well-known record and they had nothing new to say about it. It reviewed McCartney I and II, though (quite positively as well, though not as rave a review as for Ram).

quote-Easygoing Beatles drummer Ringo Starr lamented to Britain's Melody Maker that the album lacked one decent tune before concluding: "He seems to be going strange. That's a bit rich coming from Ritchie who would go on to narrate Thomas the tank "Engine" :
.
RIngo said THAT? I wonder what Paul did to make him say that. brain wheels turning...

I really don't understand why she got so much flack for it. Considering she wasn't really a singer her voice is ok. Really quite nice soemtimes. I have seen that vid on youtube of her vocals only (the rest of the band isolated) on the live recordong of Hey Jude, but that was just unfair. Mostly, i think she was fine.
because most rock stars are chauvenist and Linda stepped out of place with Paul's blessing.

Thankyou. I do hope that Linda will soon be receing of some overdue credit for backing vocals. Very nice!

Why in heaven's name haven't you opened any of them?

Probably because they are collectors items! I used to buy two of everything for that reason but can no longer afford to do that.
-
I say at least play these and enjoy them. I have a friend who burns and plays the copies and keeps the originals pretty pristine. You're missing out on some awesome macca music

Elton John is quoted as saying the harmonies on Ram are the best he's heard in a long while...Thats high praise!

It was very good of Yoko to say that Paul is a very, very good songwriter. No Yoko, he is A LOT better than that. And Ram kicks anything the other Beatles did into next week!
I agree cmack.Wipes the floor with any other solo Beatles work.
Disagree It's amazing how over the years the quality of RAM has been blown out of proportion. It's an enjoyable little album, composed quickly and for fun and then finished with a bit more care. But, for one thing it helped establishing the image of Paul McCartney as a rather inconsequential ditties-maker when it was released. So, however much we may enjoy this album now, we shouldn't lose perspective. Signed, grumpy old man
Hi Grumpy old man Its all about taste.Imagine was a great album. All Things Must Pass was good. But Paul did it consistently.I would take Ram over these any day.
RAM still sounds fresh and full of life where Imagine as much as it is a good (not great) album sounds dated, ATMP imo is one and a half albums to long, still a goodie all the same
John in general (and Imagine album in particular) tends to be very repetitive within a song structure (both lyrically & musically). Meanwhile, Paul threw the kitchen sink in every song on Ram & there are surprising chord & tempo changes, lyrics twists, innovative use of instruments, etc. on each song. Ram is the work of slight mad, but very creative genius.
