Paul McCartney 2012 Rumours
-
I wouldn't hold our breath. That is in about two weeks, so it does not look like a full on McCartney and band gig. And it could hardly be seen as a precursor to arena or stadium shows. Also, Brian Ray just posted on FB about a new side project with some Argentine musicians, which sounds like a bit of a commitment. I am not being negative or disillusioned, just saying. Having said that, I hope there will be some McCartney shows in the Fall!

2-5 weeks seems to be about standard release time for ANYTHING Paul is doing these days so no one really knows, it was just my speculation. Glad you're remaining supportive though

I'm thinking Paul will play 2-3 songs, max, at the fundraiser. The venue holds about 100 people, and it isn't being billed as a concert by any means. Still, though, any news is exciting right now.

I was thinking he'd play Lady Madonna since that's like his "Piano Piece"...and then maybe Chopsticks with Berry Gordy or something...

Please Dear God not Hey Jude, that's all I ask! Lady Madonna would be great, or a cover of a Motown song maybe?

For once, I really do not think it will be Hey Jude. I said "Lady Madonna" because (imo) it is the only really challenging piano piece he has written ops: And it could easily have been a motown hit, I think. BUT, if you remember, at the Apollo Show in Dec. '10 AND in Detroit last summer he covered "Hitchhike" but I'm fairly certain he played bass on those...who knows, we'll find out in two weeks

I bet it will be something Motown. Like when he did Hitchhike. What else is Motown that he covers?

Besides "Hitchhike", I don't believe Paul ever covered a Motown song as a solo. However, the Beatles did cover the following Motown hits: You Really Got A Hold on Me Money Please Mr. Postman Would be kind of nice if he did one of those on the 18th.

Weren't they all sung by John as the leading singer, though?

Hi Frankie, yes they were all sung by John. The only song of the three I can imagine could be sung live by Paul nowadays is Please Mr. Postman.

Hullo. How are you? Hmm. I think, from the past, Paul singing the songs that were mostly sang by John haven't always gone down too well. But who knows. Maybe he'll do it justice or maybe he'll do a cover he's never done before and surprise us all.

Yes, I would hope he'd surprise us & do a different one. You're right it usually doesn't go down well when he does a John song. Especially when there are so many he could choose from. So...what others may he choose? Maybe ones where he could play a bit of piano on them? I Heard It Through the Grapevine?

How about MARTHA MY DEAR? That is challenging on the piano. Or CALL ME BACK AGAIN!!

Call Me Back Again is just basic blues piano really, nothing special there. Martha My Dear takes a bit, but I wouldn't call it challenging. It's very straightforward and no off the wall rhythms. Lady Madonna is probably the only Paul song I'm a piano hack at. The bass line octaves screw me up right off the bat. They're ascending, and the melody is the right is descending...I don't know how he does it whilst singing!

He's a genius, that's how he does it!

Really? Let's see you play them! Just kidding! I was just thinking about cool piano tunes, which those are. Nobody is ever going to mistake Paul McCartney for being an amazing piano player. He does fine accompanying himself singing his amazing songs, but even Lady Madonna is no virtuoso tune, no more than Martha My Dear. Paul can play those runs on Lady Madonna because he can play bass and sing at the same time. He just has that ability, which even most musicians don't have. I don't think this event will be about prowess on the piano as much as about the role the piano has played in the musician's career.

Exactly, this is about that piano...not the people playing it...oddly enough

Paul played a really quick snippet of "Lady Madonna's" main piano riff on Oprah in the '90s -- and I realized how much skill that song requires on piano. I play bass to that one a lot -- one of his best bass-lines, too.
