Paul's Signature
-
I figured this would be as good a place as any to find out. I recently received this gift of a Macca autograph, and I was curious as to how other people's signatures looked. I've seen Paul's signature all over the place, and have browsed many autographs. To me, mine doesn't quite resemble Paul's typical signature style, but it did come with a COA from a reliable source. The 'M' and the 'y' are especially different from usual. Could he have been in a hurry? I don't know. I would like to think that it's real. If anyone's Paul autograph resembles this, please let me know or share a photo of yours.

It doesn't look real to me. It you want an example of Paul's autograph just look at the upper left hand corner of this forum. Who is the COA from?

Shaun is correct. John was always signing Lennen. Here's what I believe is John's true signature (I think John faked the other 3 signatures) This was sold to me in 1967 (for $2!!--well we were only 12!) by a girl whose dad was a pilot for United Airlines. It is on the back of a United Airlines memo. She said her dad flew The Beatles.
-
The signature looks fake to me too, i've never seen any Paul autograph look like that one before. Also George said that the Beatles all forged each others signatures from time to time.
-
I would say looking at the slant, plus the L at the end.of Paul ontop of the rushef McCartney signature on the lastname...It looks like a fake.
-
Yeah it looks nothing like the logo version on the website. I'm not sure how old mine is, although it's unlikely that it would date back to when The Beatles would forge each other's signatures, as fun as that would be. The COA is from Sports Management Group (SMG, Aliso Viejo, California, USA). My father has been dealing and collecting signatures for 30+ years and has a lot of experience dealing with reputable and legitimate sources, which is why I want to find out as much as I can about this one before I ask him to investigate. From hand-written song lyrics to other notes I've searched online, it's clear that Paul has his own distinct handwriting style, especially with the letter 'y'.

The trusted experts for the Beatle autographs are: Frank Caiazzo Paul Wane Roger Epperson Perry Cox. Hope you can get a refund on that autograph.

I have a signed autograph on a pic of Paul in concert from around 4yrs ago. When you purchase for £30, you're still a bit unsure plus the 'certificate' that comes with item I don't think is proper. The pic I have looks nice, the autograph looks real but is it, I'm not sure. I'd love to buy an official & real autograph but where do you purchase? I'd sell my house for a meeting with Paul in a certain Studio 2!! Good to be back on messageboard.

Sorry but that autograph is definitely fake, even if Paul was in a hurry he would just sign 'Paul', not something like that. COA's mean nothing most the time, anyone can fake a sig then print one off.

Bottom line with Paul's signatures nowadays: Were you present when Paul signed it? That's the only personal evidence of authenticity that will satisfy yourself. And it's only valid for you...... Paul signs a few items only usually at entrances to venues or post concert of things thrown on stage or collected by his assistants from people at the stage barrier at the end of the show. The best opportunity is at a publicity signing (when he will only sign the item he's promoting at the time), but he hasn't done one of those in a while. And the events are only announced at short notice usually in London or a major US city. It usually means an overnight queue to be the "most likely to succeed" group. It is a personal meet and greet opportunity but do expect the "moment" to be fleeting and moved along quickly by security and store staff so as many as possible get their moment. One or two may get on-stage from front row at a concert or at a pre-show sound-check as part of a Hot Sound Package - but with tickets at over a thousand or so it is a major gamble as only a couple are normally invited. There are real signatures out there but thousands of fakes as well so it's buyer be very wary indeed. I personally wouldn't try that route. Martin

the sig looks like it read Paul Lives or Paul Elvis :

This all reminds of how back in the 1960's George Harrison was so good at faking his colleagues signatures that not even John,Paul and Ringo could tell if the signature were their's or not. hmmm......seems i'm not allowed to use the word 'f-a-k-i-n-g' on this message board? :

I collect autographs, I have a few LPs signed by Paul. I have a handful of dealers I go through on a regular basis. I have a few rules I follow when buying autographs, always research the signatures of the person you are looking to purchase (look at what other things they have signed look like). Look at the item the signature is on, it is possible for that person to have signed that item (example: I have seen people trying to sell signed George Harrison CDs that were released after he passed away). Try and avoid photos, they are too easy to fake or reproduce. I do look at ebay from time to time, but there are just too many fakes on there, I can usually spot them quickly. Paul usually has two styles of signing autographs, one is in full, similar to the on on the top of this webpage, and the second is by just signing "Paul".... if he is in a hurry. When he signs his name in full, it is almost always in a single line, and the signature moves up as he signs across the page. In my experience, I would say this item is fake. I purchased a signed "Double Fantasy" LP a many years ago. The pressing is of the right vintage, being a first pressing from 1980, printed in the US. John's signature is very convincing, exactly how he would sign, however I have had three dealers look at it and they won't say either way on the items authenticity because of the way Yoko's signature is on the cover. She does sign her name a few different ways, but it does look a little odd (even to me). Two of the dealers have said they would have issued COAs for the LP if Yoko's signature was not on the LP, nothing against Yoko, just the signature casts some doubt over the authenticity of the item as a whole. Luckily I didn't spend a lot of money on it, it's still framed and hanging in my house though! If buying or collecting autographs, do your research, if it doesn't look or feel right, it's probably not.

thanks for the input, everyone. it's sad that it's likely a fake, but nonetheless i learned something. i had a gut feeling right away because it just looked wrong. it's just gonna be rough telling my parents who shelled out some cash for this as a gift. if i ever get any good luck, and all the stars are aligned, and pigs fly - i may run into paul somewhere (like a trolly car ) or save up enough money for an authentic signature. and to make it sting just a bit more, paul's new facebook cover photo went up today...and it's his signature! lol.

I have individual autographs of all four Beatles. George's and Ringo's are on Genesis Productions items and are valid. Paul's is on one of his Paintings that was bought from the gallery. John's came from Sotheby's . It's the only questionable one in my own mind. I've had it since the early 2000's. It's on a hotel receipt and I did check before I bought it and the Beatles were in that town on the date on the receipt.

Ok, here's an update. My dad - having found out that the Paul sig was fake - came across something even more special. He just received this gift and decided to give it to me (since he's more of a Beatles fan rather than Wings). I felt my heart race! Pretty cool piece. Looks far more legit than my previous one. I think I can rest comfortably now.

i can never forge it lol i kid
