Dance Tonight Freedom...
-
Still, "Freedom" was a better -- and very time-appropriate -- choice than "From A Lover To A Friend." I was one of the very few that bought a CD-single of "From A Lover...," as Tower Records was literally removing it from the shelves when I walked in the store -- to make room for "Freedom." (I think I'm splitting infinitives or dangling something in that previous sentence, but I don't care today).

Sometimes Paul makes some odd single choices. Which songs do you think should have stayed as album tracks, b-sides or just in the can? Probably the obvious one for me is 'Give Ireland Back to the Irish' but how about you?
You need to know the history of the British occupation in Northern Ireland to understand this song and the reason it was a single. Lennon wrote the song Luck of the Irish at the same time. I thought Dance Tonight was an odd singles choice, mainly because I thought there were better songs on Memory Almost Full. It's damn catchy though, especially live. Agree that Freedom and Mary Had A Little Lamb should not have been singles. I remember him saying that his kids liked Mary so that was why it came out. Not quite like putting music to Golden Slumbers though.

oh woman oh why never digged this one wasnt it a b side to something (no not the beatle song)
B-Side to Another Day. No wonder the critics (and his ex-partner John Lennon) took him to the woodshed for a few years in the early 70's. They were pretty rough but it's like he brought it on himself. The man who wrote Hey Jude and Let It Be putting out this dreck to the public? What was Paul thinking (or smoking) in those days?

I don't think Smile Away ever was a single. Just an album track on Ram.

Is that song available anywhere...on any album? Paul sort of disowns it now, like it doesn't exist; doesn't want to insult the Queen or whatever. I remember rather liking it...the marching-of-soldiers sound and the guitars.
I really don`t think the Queen would be in the slightest bit bothered or interested. The real problem that has always existed with this song is that it could be interpreted as being in support of the IRA, a terrorist group. For those of you who don`t understand, that`s like putting out a song in support of the Taliban.

Split infinitive ("was literally removing") but we'll let it slide this time!

Thanks, Nans'.

It's a bit more complicated and there is a long history. The British divided Northern Ireland from Ireland in the 1920's and the occupying British forces killed far more of the opposition than the IRA ever did. The IRA may seem like terrorists now, but one analogy is like going back to when the U.S. was supporting the Taliban when they were fighting the Russian Invasion forces in the 1980's. The songs position is that if the British got out, the killing would stop on both sides. Or an overall judgement that war is wrong, plain and simple.

I think Paul put out "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" because he wanted to make a statement, just like John did with "Luck of the Irish" and "Sunday Bloody Sunday" (the later being the best of the 3 tunes IMHO). As for Junior's Farm, it was a hit, so I'm not sure what there is to complain about. It's a fun tune.

We both missed the run-on sentence.
