Rockshow in Theatres
-
Sadly where I saw it, the theatre did not realize they were to show the introduction. I ha ve seen it online. I am truly amazed that the state of Iowa managed to get showings in three cities. 19 people where I saw it (drove over an hour also). Theatre had it billed as Wings Over America, not Rockshow. Totally agree on no promotion. Aside from seeing Paul performing in his prime, I made a new friend.

I also live in Indianapolis and was surprised that it wasn't playing there (especially with the show coming up!), but was more than happy to trek to Louisville to see it with Furlow!!! We had a BLAST! Rockshow has been a favorite of mine for a long time and seeing it on the big screen was unreal. The fact that it was one week before the gig in Memphis made it all the better! Seeing Hi Hi Hi and knowing that's coming next week? ...I can barely contain myself
-
I thought it was just the theater I went to see it in... but after reading all the other posts for a week now... it's clear. The ROCKSHOW DVD these theaters are playing does not contain any surround mix at all. So many questions. In my wildest dreams I cannot imagine a bigger screw up. Why go to all the trouble to arrange "one night only" showings of ROCKSHOW across the country... and have everyone disappointed in the sound quality? I wonder if anybody in management is even aware this is happening? Will the official DVD release contain the missing background vocals... audience ambience and surround mix? How could such a great idea... done with such good intentions... for the fans... how could it have gone so terribly wrong? Is it possible that nobody yet has checked these DVD'S that are about to be released to make sure the sound is right? I for one will be doing a lot of research before I spend my $30 on the bluray. Could all of the DVD'S be defective? Somebody needs to take responsibility for this massive debacle. Paul would freak out if he knew this was going on... which I'm sure he doesn't and probably never will know. Just a hugely disappointed fan of 50 years. It could have been so great if anybody had cared enough to make sure this was done right.
-
This was well intentioned but haphazard. ROCKSHOW viewings should have been coordinated to play in cities where McCartney is going to perform, but maybe more importantly, to make sure the movie was shown where he will not be performing. Even a cursory look at a list of the 60 largest cities in the USA should have been target markets. From what I read, small towns got it, bigger cities were ignored, even whole states were left out. There really is no excuse. It's JUST a movie. This could have been handled better.

I think I'm going to go see it by myself on June 8 when it plays in Concord. None of my friends who are as rabid a fan as me live close enough. But I'm confused that it's playing in Concord, 45-min north of me, but not in Boston which is an hour south of me. Weird. EDIT: Nevermind, it's showing in Concord on JULY 8...which is the night before I'm seeing Paul FOR REAL in Boston. Plus it's a Monday night...

Will the official DVD release contain the missing background vocals... audience ambience and surround mix?
I've really liked the mix that I've heard on all the tracks that have been released so far. I LIKE that Paul's voice is front and center. He was at his absolute vocal peak, and he is the one I want to hear, not the backing vocals, which were occasionally rough anyway. I LIKE that the backing vocals are lower in the mix, and the bass, guitar, horns, and drums are much more out front. The tracks MPL has released so far sound terrific. And I don't care much about audience ambiance either.
-
We did have a 5.1 mix, but very sparsely. Only random audience cheers from the back, all the music from the front, with the harmonies only coming from the back at the few points where Laine/Linda McCartney were singing solo (without McCartney).
-
The backing vocals in the original release were spot-on. I wanted to hear them, dang it!

I drove about 90 miles to see this and there was a total of 19 people in the theatre..but I had a good time..enjoyed it.

I also wonder whether the backing vocals are a little less upfront, particularly in the film, to disguise that a lot of them were overdubbed in post-production. I agree with you though; it's great to both his voice and the band sounding so pristine upfront!

On Beatles, Wings, or solo Paul tunes, all the vocals are a huge part of the music. As a musician and performer myself, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that backing vocals are of major importance. That's not to say the lead vocals shouldn't be "up front" or that that backup vox should over-power the rest. But hey, we can argue all day long about should backing vocals should be inaudible or actually heard (I still say lets hear them or they wouldn't have bothered singing them-but maybe I'm an idiot for wanting to hear the entire performance!). We can also go all day about whether the audience should be heard, or if there should be complete silence in the theater for a couple minutes between all the songs. One thing, however, that definitely was a major f**k-up was that the entire mix was wasn't heard due to the fact that the theaters only had in 2 channel stereo (where i went it sounded like crap, sadly enough). Jeez, when was the last time any anyone went to a theater and only heard 2 channel stereo? For me, it was the 1980's. This is 2013!! C'mon, get with it!! What the hell happened? After some thought, I think that's why the entire mix was not heard. Had it been in surround, we would've heard all that we were supposed to. Like I mentioned. I can't wait for the blue-ray. I WILL have all my speakers kicking. THEN I will hear in all! Can't wait...

Good points. However -- yes -- backing vocals are essential. And -- yes -- hearing the audience in the mix is critical. It's a concert. I no longer listen to the "Sgt.Pepper/The End" track on my Back In The U.S. CD because you can hear a pin drop toward the beginning of Abe's drum-solo. Once he's into the solo, crowd noises can be heard, which is great, but people are usually screaming immediately as "The End" starts. The CD mix always kills that moment for me.

I am seeing it tonight here in London, Ontario. I'm taking my 21 year old son with me. I'm a bit concerned reading about the quality of the audio....I hope our theatre has the volume up at least! And I definitely hope they show the intro.
-
Going tonight In Bath UK...so far 7 tickets have been sold..... I dont care...BIG screen,Big speakers, popcorn,Macca...whats not to like?................................update later!
-
From all accounts I've heard regarding US showings, they've all been pretty crappy. I have a feeling Ontario might be the same. Hope not though!! If the showing I went to at least had the volume cranked a bit it would've helped. It is a rock show, ya know!! Fill us in... Sarah, yes, please let us know how it is in Bath. Maybe it'll be a better over there! Curious...

That's not actually the case. In this thread on the Steve Hoffmann music forums, there are people saying the sound was great, others saying it was off, people saying the backing vocals sounded fine (if low), others criticizing the backing vocals. Some people said the picture was clear, some said it was grainy. In short, the comments are all over the map but there are plenty of people on that thread praising what they saw. http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/who-is-attending-mccartney-rockshow-theater-showings-this-week-roll-call.318011/page-8

http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/who-is-attending-mccartney-rockshow-theater-showings-this-week-roll-call.318011/page-7 For example, here's one review from a New Jersey showing:
Just got home from the State theater NJ showing of Rockshow. Fabulous sound and picture certainly for almost 40 years ago concert. 1) background vocals are lower but they vary in loudness from song to song. I didn't have have a problem with it. Especially since Paul's singing in the movie is the best I've ever heard. What a great vocalist he was...... 2) Paul had a great band. Jimmy is by far the best guitarist in any of his bands . Joe is a great drummer to watch and hear. Denny was great as a live performer, ... fun to watch for sure . 3) The sound was great over all, very powerful coming from a concert hall which had their speakers stacked on the right and left side of the stage unlike a typical movie theater. I think their sound system is geared towards concerts instead of movies Almost sounded like Wings was on stage in front of us Will post photo later. People were clapping after the songs and I would guess their was about 300 people there. Which made the night more fun. A+
So it seems to vary from theater to theater, depending on whether the theater made any efforts to adjust/control the sound. (And pretty cool to watch it with 300 people!)

There were 8 of us at the showing...but we loved it! Here are my thoughts.. Vocals ...Macca incredible Backing vocals great but WAY to low, could hardly hear them....totally different to the WOA recording. You could also notice some of the overdubbing. But for me and the old school friend I bumped into it was brilliant.(BTW we both agree that the 2009 gig at the O2 arena London was a "perfect" gig and nothing can top his performance that night) Alot of "bring backs"........as in .. Bring back...Beware my love, Soily,Denny Laine, double necked guitars, flared trousers, mullets,Linda (obviously),Silly Love Songs. Macca introduced the film and and did not even mention Denny Laine who was a huge part of the Wings sound!!!! Met a new Macca fan who brought along his old Wings Fun Club membership card and by coincidence he became a fan from watching Wings Over the World on TV at the same time as I did!!!! Sound system was OK. Very bass and Macca heavy. All in all it was a great film if you are a fan!!! ....and so to bed
-
....oh yeah and totally forgot to mention Denny Laine looked completely stoned throughout the whole gig!!!!!!!!!!!!! And did anybody else notice the guy in the audience shown during HI HI Hi...he looked suspiciously like John Lennon!!!......really
-
...and bring back the horns!!!!!....I'm done now
