"The Highwayman" (Jimmy Webb) I was a highwayman, along the coach roads I did ride, with sword and pistol by my side many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade the bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five, but I am still alive I was a sailor, I was borne upon the tide and with the sea I did abide I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico, I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow and when the yards broke off, they said that I got killed, but I am living still I was a dam builder cross the river deep and wide, when steel and water would collide, a place called Boulder on the wild Colorado, I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound but I am still around I'll always be around, around, around I fly a starship across the universe divide, and when I reach the other side, I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can, perhaps I may become a highwayman again or I may simply be a single drop of rain, but I will remain and I'll be back again and again and again

Heartlight Come back again I want you to stay next time 'cause sometimes the world ain't kind when people get lost like you and me I just made a friend a friend is someone you need but now that he had to go away, I still feel the words that he might say Turn on your heart light, let it shine wherever you go let it make a happy glow for all the world to see Turn on your heartlight in the middle of a young girl's dream don't wake me up too soon gonna take a ride across the moon you and me he's lookin' for a home 'cause everyone needs a place and home's the most excellent place of all and I'll be right here if you should call me Turn on your heart light, let it shine wherever you go let it make a happy glow for all the world to see turn on your heartlight 'in the middle of a young boy's dream don't wake me up too soon gonna take a ride across the moon you and me turn on your heartlight now --Neil Diamond

Angel Spread Your Wings Prisoners of the heart in search of love and peace, all in desperation longing for release, I am just a passenger angel you're my ride take me past the place I passed the last time that I died angel spread your wings I want to fly away with you take me in your arms, I know you're dying to fly away forever fly away forever Angel comes into my room it's dark as it can be wants to know if he can take me soaring out to sea lying in his warm embrace like a child awaiting birth, angel comes and takes me for everything I'm worth Angel spread your wings I want to fly away with you take me in your arms, I know you're dying to fly away forever fly away forever fly away forever Angel spread your wings --Danny O'Keefe

It's got a tune to it. Folk rock guitar, yeah. It's not meant to do anything for you personally. You probably never fell for a guy, I assume you're heterosexual...I was just expressing myself to the best of my ability, which might not be much, but it's laudable to make an effort. Carly Simon's one of my fave singers and I can hear her singing it, in my head. and that's entertaining and fun for me. I can sing pretty good, too!

Sisters of Mercy (Leonard Cohen) The sisters of mercy they are not departed or gone, they went looking for me when I thought that I just can't go on, and they gave me their comfort and later they gave me their song I hope you run into them, you who've been stranded so long They lay down beside me I made my confession to them, they touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem if your life is a leaf that the seasons pick off and condemn they will grace you with love that's as peaceful and green as a stem First you must leave everything that you cannot control, it begins with your family and later comes round to your soul I've been where you're hanging I think I can see how you're pinned, when you're not feeling holy your loneliness says that you've sinned They lay down beside me I made my confession to them, they touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem if your life is a leaf that the seasons pick off and condemn they will bind you with love that's as graceful and green as a stem when I left they were sleeping I hope you run into them soon, don't turn on the light they can read your address by the moon and it won't make me jealous if I learn that they've sweetened your night, we weren't lovers like that and besides, it would still be alright we weren't lovers like that and besides, it would still be alright

I also love most of Jimmy Webb's song lyrics. His melodies too Macarthur's Park Spring was never waiting for us girl it ran one step ahead as we followed in the dance between the parted pages and were pressed in love's hot fevered iron like a stripe-ed pair of pants I recall the yellow cotton dress it was floating like a wave on the ground around your knees the birds like tender babies in your hands and the old men playing checkers by the trees Maacarthur park is melting in the dark all the sweet green icing flowing down, oh someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'cause it took so long to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again, Oh no Oh, no there will be another song for me, and I will sing it therewill be another dream for me someone will bring it I will drink the wine while it is warm and never let you catch me looking at the sun, and after all the loves of my life after all the loves of my life you'll still be the one, little girl I will take my life into my hands I will use it I will win the worship in their eyes oh and I will lose it I will have the things that I desire and my passion flow like rivers through the skies, after all the loves of my life after all the loves of my life I'll be thinking of you and wondering why Macarthur Park is melting in the dark all the sweet green icing flowing down, oh someone left the cake out in the rain, I don't think that I can take it cause it took so long to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again, oh no oh no no --Jimmy Webb

If These Walls Could Speak If these old walls if these old walls could speak of things that they remember well parties and people raising hell a couple in love living week to week Rooms full of laughter if these old walls could speak If hallowed halls oh if hallowed halls could talk these would have a tale to tell of sun goin' down and dinner bell and children playing at hide and seek from floor to rafter if these old halls could speak They would tell you that I'm sorry for bein' cold and blind and weak they would tell you that it's only that I have a little bit of a stubborn streak yes I do, darlin' if these walls could speak If these old fashioned window panes were eyes well I guess they would have seen it all, each little tear sigh and footfall and every dream that we came to seek or followed after if these old walls could speak They would tell you that I owe you more than I could ever pay, here's someone who really needs you, baby don't ever go away that's what these walls would say if they were not so meek, if these old walls could speak --JIMMY WEBB

I Am Tired Joey Boy by Van Morrison I'm tired Joey Boy while youre out with the sheep my life is so troubled now I can't go to sleep I would walk myself out but the streets are so dark, I shall wait till the morning and walk in the park This life is so simple when one is at home and I'm never complaining when there's work to be done oh I'm tired Joey Boy of the makings of men I would like to be cheerful again ambition will take you and ride you too far and conservatism bring you to boredom once more sit down by the river and watch the stream flow, recall all the dreams that you once used to know the things you've forgotten that took you away to pastures not greener but meaner Love of the simple is all that I need I've no time for lovers of greed go up to the mountain, go up to the glen when silence will touch you and heartbreak will mend --VAN MORRISON

"Salt of the Earth" (M. Jagger/K. Richards) Let's drink to the hardworking people let's drink to the lowly of birth raise your glass to the good and the evil let's drink to the salt of the earth say a prayer for the common foot soldier spare a thought for his backbreaking work say a prayer for his wife and his children who burn the fires and till the earth And when I search a faceless crowd a swirling mass of grey and black and white they don't look real to me in fact they look so strange raise your glass to the hardworking people let's drink to the uncounted heads let's think of the wavering millions who need leaders but get gamblers instead spare a thought for the ragtaggy people let's drink to the two thousand million let's drink to the humble of birth Let's drink to the salt of the earth
