Lucky! Wish I could get one in person. (without the overnight waiting)
Doubt that would ever happen, tho. I do give HMV credit for getting one thing right this time; they said right from the start that the only guaranteed signatures would be for the 60 competition winners. So even the very first person in the reserve queue was taking a chance by kipping out overnight. At the signing I attended, HMV kept changing things around as they kept giving out more and more bands over the course of 24 hours: wristbands guaranteed a signature; wristbands only guaranteed you entrance into the store; wristbands guaranteed nothing. Wristbands were also numbered but they never honored the numbers, so there was lots of queue-jumping. Right mess.
thenightfish which signing did you go to?

Personally i dont agree it was luck, i have put myself out each time, this time i queued for 26 hours with no sleep, which any fan that wants to meet him could do if they were willing to put themselves out

I don't think Nancy nor I meant that you got the siggy by luck. Just that it is great that you have met him so many times. I have never had the opportunity since he never does these signings in my town or anywhere remotely close to me.

You sound a little harsh there Yes it's not luck you met him, you put the work in and well done! But surely you see that you have to have luck (or be fortunate - that may be a better word) to be able to do such things rather than say be ill, or have urgent commitments, or just not be able to be there. I think that is all people meant.

Thanks guys, yes, that is what we meant Jason, that you were fortunate to have met him so many times.

HMV for Standing Stone in 1997. I chose not to sleep on the street partly because I didn't want to and also because in the afternoon before signing day, they told us that since we had wristbands, we were guaranteed "in" and therefore didn't need to kip out. Many people decided to anyway, including some friends of mine; the rest of my group chose not to. So we returned early the next morning and were therefore farther back in the queue than we had been the day before. All morning, HMV kept giving out more wristbands and soon just having one didn't guarantee anything, since everybody had one. Long story short, I did not get an autograph, tho I did at least get to see Paul briefly as he passed by my section of the queue when they led him out of the store (and he saw me as well. ) But I know people who DID sleep out and did NOT get signed, partly because of the way the whole thing was handled. I was more upset for them than for myself.

Agreed. This is what really ticks me off about some people. They are the ones that made the choice to spend the time and money to go to this signing when there was no guarentee they would get in to meet Paul. And Paul is the one that gets blamed for it. He didn't make them travel all that way or promise they would get in to get a signature.

awwww i think you guys are a bit mean and judgemental (though if it was me i wouldn't go running to the papers!) - they did queue for 18 hours, which for his last 2 UK signings was more than enough, if it was you you'd be gutted (though not run to the papers!) you know you would. But yes with this signing it was made clear that only the comp winners would be guarenteed, so it was a unique occasion and different to usual signings (but without those 60 winners the other 60 queuers would have got in!). It bugs me on here when people seem to spout that 18 hours was nowhere near enough to queue, it has been in the past so that's prob where these 2 got their info from
-
I wouldn't ever bother. Too much of a crap-shoot. Why risk being disappointed?

Sorry if I do sound mean but they are making it seem like it's all Paul's fault when these two grown women made the choice to travel all that way with no guarentee they would get to meet Paul then they go running to the press to make Paul seem like an a hole.

"super-fan" status (which is a dumb qualifier anyway has nothing to do with how early someone queued up. What if Person #1 in the reserve queue had been there 5 days early, and the queue was STILL cut off after Paul had signed for the 60 competition winners? HMV never guaranteed that even one person would be signed after those first 60 people. Most people assumed Paul would stay, but what if he didn't? I do feel badly for people who were disappointed, but it was at their own risk.

I was 8 behind macarrow so probably got signed at 4.47ish. When I came out I noticed the crowds on either side of the entrance being quiet big and growing and some people across the road. I did not notice one police officer just security staff, I found it difficult to get away and that the pedestrian traffic was sluggish. when I spotted Rachel and was moving to meet her I saw a young girl fall down it looked to me as if she was having a fit, she was with her father, security staff went to help them. Once I got sorted out, a young man helped get the insert back into CD, I was being very cackhanded. I said goodbye to Rachel, Neets was nowhere to be seen and Phil was obviously at this moment singing with Paul. It was then that I noticed 4 Police officers and 2 of those Blunkett blacklegs and that the congestion had got worse, I turned towards the tube and then spoke with someone who had been in the signing and then left at 4.00pm. As I was leaving the store John thingy hammel was coming in, no doubt from assessing the situation outside. I wasn't surprised then when I got home to hear that the signing had ended then or shortly afterwards. The Police's duty is to ensure everyone safety not just those at the signing, Paul's staff is to him and HMV to their staff and customers. If I had been the duty Inspector I would have probably stopped the signing. This is a busy road and pedestrians were spilling out onto it. I found the staff at HMV to be very pleasant and helpful throughout my time there except when they refused to put Cilla on instead of the loop of NEW and some Beatles comp. I am happy I got his autograph and a lovely red cushion. I was the sensible one in a hat, Phil was the other one.

What does "cackhanded" mean?
-
I have question for those brave/dedicated fans who have camped out and queued overnight for signings about "queue etiquette". If you need to go and get a bite to eat and/or go to the toilet, do you risk losing your place in the queue? Or are people happy to let you back in to your original place? And are you allowed to keep a place for a friend - or is that a no-no?

Having two right hands. You wear large depends and bring buttys.
