Billy Joel Maybe Im Amazed
embarrassing. i'm a big Joel fan but he simply does not have the chops to do this song.
-
My favorite cut is The Airborne Toxic Event - No More Lonely Nights. Beautiful.

It's now possible to listen to the whole album here: http://gaffa.dk/nyhed/89607 it's a Danish link, but just open the player that's in the article.

Agree that using Paul's band probably made this much easier to record, but it's also going to make too much of it sound exactly like Paul's live versions with a different singer. But this is absolutely worth it to hear Dylan do "Things We Said Today". Completely surreal to hear that, and he somehow makes that song sound ominous.

Another huge thumbs up to Brian Wilson's version of Wanderlust. It would fit perfectly on Pet Sounds. Amazing.

I like Billy Joel's version of Maybe I'm Amazed. Lord knows, we don't need someone trying to sing like McCartney in 1970. Hell, even Paul can't do that. I think the aged, experienced voices of people like Joel and Dylan show a dimension to Paul's songs that would be lost if younger people did them. Let's face it, Paul did them justice when he was younger, having these weathered voices sing these songs gives them a new life, a new perspective.

Wowser! Jet by Cheap Trick; Rock Show by Kiss; absolute rocking Helen Wheels by Def Leppard; a very cool version of Listen To What The Man Said by my daughter's fav band Owl City; Wanderlust by Brian Wilson sounds incredible; and on, and on, and on. Never heard of Airborne Toxic Event, but holy batman, great take on Lonely Nights.

I agree! KISS and Cheap Trick and all of the other artists do great renditions! I am even more happy I ordered this!

Still trying to get it to click to KISS. That's the one I am looking forward to most, I reckon.... but I am hoping it's them as a full band doing it (well, it won't be with Ace and Pete, but you know what I mean).

I don't know why they used "The Band". Maybe that's why they all sound too true to the original?
Big mistake. Different interpretations requires a band's/artists take on it. Early days (no pun intended), but all I am hearing is the same backing with a different voice. And the voice is never going to match the original, so it's already on the back foot.
-
Okay now a few songs in. Dylan's (trademark) poor voice remarkably at least gave a different variation. Have heard the "Sinatra" version of My Love (maybe he would have credited this to George Harrison had he sung it live) and I could live with it, although it took me a bit .... Blackbird was a breath of fresh air.... probably the sort of thing I was expecting from the album general.... never heard of her but she has a honey voice.... Willy OK, helps that the guitar/music is a different interpretation.... Now I am going to shut up, as the album is starting to steer away from homogenised backing and get 'individualised'.
-
Finally, Rockshow by Kiss! They rocked it. Paul (Stanley) even threw in a few 'ooohs' reminiscent of a younger Paul (McCartney)... the backing didn't sound much different, so will be interested to know if it was their handwork....I would've loved Ace's contribution to the guitar solo/riffs. He's one of the best guitarists of all time, and would've come up with some dynamite.

And so many other songs from artists sung a tone or a semi-tone down from the original. Fine versions, some, but no wonder Paul's voice is not what it used to be. He really let it rip all those years. Even when it didn't seem he was. Makes one appreciate even more how great his voice was for such a prolonged period. No Elvis or Freddy, classically, but boy, one of the most deceptively diverse singers of all time. This album is probably designed to showcase his song writing brilliance, and rightfully so, but above all, right now all I can think is how much better his voice is than every contributor on this album.

Yes, she is. I don't follow her but that 1st song that was kind of popular here..Get your Record On or Put your Records On...got me to like her. So at least whenever I heard her name...I knew who she was. And speaking of female singers like that...that are kind of popular but not so much...what ever happened to Joss Stone? (sorry totally off topic)

I agree. McCartney had and still has, for a 72 year old, an amazing voice. I really am appreciating these different vocal takes on his voice, even the eye-brow raising ones like Dylan and Nelson. I also like Joel's gravelly voice. If I want to hear a youthful clear version, I'll listen to Paul's original recordings of this. What is the point in anyone doing it just like Paul did? Also, I think Gene Simmons is singing Venus and Mars, then Paul Stanley takes over on Rock Show. VERY cool!
-
Kiss always big on their Beatle influence, even when they were spitting blood and flying over the stage! Don't know who sung Listen to What the Man Said, but they weren't too bad. (I should research) Even came up with "take it away".... No mention of Thaddeus! Shame U2 weren't on the album.

I am opening my horizons. Gonna check her out.... can't guarantee I will join her message board!
