Song writing changes

IMO, Paul doesn't care a lot about the lyrics. He's a melodist, the biggest melodist in history of rock music, and he will always find his pleasure in the creation of melodies. Lyrics are not very important for him.
I think that's utter nonsense. Look at the lyrics to Blackbird, Here Today, Somedays and many, many others, and it's obvious a lot of thought and care went into them. What's true is that he doesn't always put lots of effort into the lyrics. Sometimes he does just get a sound or riff or melody in his head and run with whatever words come into his head, and so we get free-association silliness like Jet and Soily. But to say he doesn't care about lyrics is clearly not true, it's just that for some songs he has other priorities.
I said lyrics are not "very important" for him, didn't say he doesn't care about them You named some great lyrics, and we can say that Paul has... 15? 20 great lyrics? what about the other 150? is the most prolific artist in history of popular music because he makes his music around the melodies, not around lyrics.

I'd say 20-25 or so great lyrics and easily 100 very good lyrics, probably more. Take, for example, "Baby's Request." Some of the greatest lyrics in popular music? Nah. But perfectly good, and quite effective at conveying the mood Paul wants to convey with that song. He actually does that most of the time. I could name 100 without breaking a sweat. The goofy/junky ones aren't that common, they just stand out because some of them are so wacky. Oh, and you actually did say "Paul doesn't care a lot about lyrics." And I think the evidence is overwhelming that this is incorrect.

Maybe the problem is in my language. As a I said before, I'm from Argentina and I don't speak english very well, so maybe i want to say something but the way i say it is not the correct I felt that lyrics are for paul the "working part" of the musical process, and the creation of melodies are the part that he loves to do, and he does it with spontaneity because he uses his natural gift to make that. That's, IMO, the difference between him and other musicians like Waters, Dylan or Jon Anderson, people who feels pleasure writing lyrics. That doesn't mean he don't care about lyrics at all, it means is not his best skill.

Now the 'dustbin lid' lyric has been doing the rounds for years..... geez, make that decades.... I remember when the album reviews came out, the critics went nuts on that.... it did seem lame. But... then again... on reflection....maybe it was genius.... maybe he was saying he'd had enough of the "garbage" and wanted closure on the relationship in mention in the song, thus 'acting like a dustbin lid'.... slamming shut on the rubbish of it all. Quite clever perhaps? Maybe I am just clinging (not in a cling wrap way)....
_________________________________________________________ I never minded the "Dustbin lid" lyric. What I like about "the Other me" is the overall sound...like an R&B flavor especially with the vocals. The great part of Macca that a lot of critics miss is his diversity. Name another song in the McCartney Catalog that sounds like "The Other Me". The song is so different yet you know it is Paul. I also like the overall lyrics because it differs from so many Macca songs where the lyrics are generic. Here Paul I believe is telling Linda he is sorry for something he did to her and he should be better than that. Quite a bit more confessional for Paul than usual. But overall I like best the R&B vocal. One of the better songs on Pipes of Peace in my opinion.
