TCM and Classic Film Discussion in General
-
The 60's reissue was yellowed. It was cropped. The technology was limited by analog methods, with little means to process the information in the film and extract the true values. It was, at that time, "a restoration". SurSteven, you have found a Time Machine! Wonderful and precious, though I have to believe the ladies in the second clip are perhaps promoting for the trade. I also feel a pretentiousness there. As if they are The Daughters of Edison!

For those who may be interested... TCM will present a special 75th Anniversary Celebration screening of Gone with the Wind. This is a Fathom Events limited screening in select cinemas nationwide. Show dates are Sunday, September 28th and Wednesday, October 1st. Gone with the Wind will be introduced by Robert Osborne. We are sooooo excited, we cannot wait to see Gone with the Wind on the big screen!!!
Yesterday, we had an opportunity to see Gone with the Wind on the big screen. In a word, the experience was AMAZING!!! The theater in which classic films are typically screened at our local cinema had sold out, prompting management to move the screening of this film to a larger theater which also sold out. A second large theater in which to screen this film was then added and subsequently sold out. It is truly difficult to fathom that a 75 year-old film could sell out two theaters for four screenings! Talk about standing the test of time, this film leaves no doubt as to its ability to captivate an audience of any generation. LOVED Robert Osborne's introduction to this film! During his introduction, he mentioned something that I had heard in the past. Whilst naming some of the actors and actresses who attended this film's premiere, Robert mentioned that due to the circumstances of another time and place, Hattie McDaniel had not been invited. The concept of this circumstance is so difficult to understand in today's world. I could not help but to think of this circumstance whilst watching this film, witnessing Hattie's brilliant performance with her fabulous use of body language, delivering her lines splendidly! She leaves us with no question as to her earning of the Oscar which she was so genuinely deserving of receiving. With every view of this film I find Hattie's performance of greater and still greater value. Her use of body language is truly supportive not only to her own lines, but also those delivered by others. I found that most of the feedback from the theater audience was in reaction to Hattie's lines and/or body language. Hattie is truly priceless in this film and I LOVE that she received the recognition from the Academy which she so richly deserved. Hattie McDaniel Academy Award Presentation:
Also mentioned in Osborne's introduction was the cost of $1.50 to see Gone with the Wind which was three times the cost of seeing a typical movie at that time. The cost of attending this film's premiere was $10., but as Osborne further explained, those attending the premiere were sitting in the same theater as Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Claudette Colbert, etc. I was absolutely blown away by the cinematography which is a breathtaking experience on the big screen! Vivien Leigh was stunningly beautiful as she appeared at the door of Ashley's birthday party in her exquisite garnet red dress. It was awesome to hear the sighs from the audience as this moment unfolded. It is almost impossible to take one's eyes away from Leigh at this moment as she is truly mesmerizing! When I first read about the light bulb in the gas lamp mistake, I had to watch intently to catch this whilst viewing this film on television. On the big screen this mistake is larger than life and impossible to miss. I have maintained that no matter how many times I see a particular film, I always pick up something new. This time around, I noticed a cat sleeping on a red brick ledge beneath the sundial which I had never noted in the past. ops: http://www.cornel1801.com/1/g/GONE_WITH_THE_WIND/2_pictures/Do_not_squander_time.jpg If you are able to do so, I highly recommend seeing Gone with the Wind on the big screen as it was truly a fabulous experience! If you are unable to make it to the cinema, you may check out this ten-time Oscar winning film tonight at 10:00 PM EDT. Gone with the WindTriplets Love Paul:
Oscar-winning Best Picture offering stellar performances by all from this now legendary ensemble cast, including Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Hattie McDaniel. Portraying Scarlett O'Hara was a dream for many Hollywood actresses and the role of a lifetime for Vivien Leigh, who earned an Oscar for her outstanding performance. Hattie McDaniel became the first African-American to be nominated for and win an Oscar for her brilliant portrayal of Mammy. Gable and de Havilland both received the nod with nominations for their efforts. Often overlooked, Butterfly McQueen delivers a noteworthy performance in her portrayal of Prissy. A well-deserved Oscar for breathtaking cinematography (color) that genuinely sets the mood throughout this film.
Enjoy!!!
So sad I saw this a little bit too late There is truly nothing like watching a classic film on the big screen! I bet this was so amazing!! I did manage to see The Wizard of Oz in 3-D on an IMAX screen and even tho watching the film countless times, I still noticed so many things I'd missed all of the years... when watching it on the big screen. Thanks always for your updates TLP, I've caught some good movies thanks to you. I'll have to subscribe to some of these movie sites!

Taking into consideration the lack of technology at the time, you still found the screening to be disappointing. I am sorry to learn that the experience was not all that you had hoped it would be.

You're welcome and I am sorry you missed this one on the big screen. The screening was indeed amazing, you would have LOVED it! Like a Macca concert, there were people of all ages in attendance. Most interesting to me were four generations of women in the theater with the great-grandmother attending the original screening in 1939. If I heard correctly, she then attended a second screening with her daughter in 1961. Both of these women attended a screening with the grandmother's daughter in 1989. All three of these women, the great-grandmother, the grandmother, and the mother were attending the current screening in 2014 with the mother's daughter, the great-granddaughter. I thought this was awesome! I recall that you were able to catch The Wizard of Oz on the big screen, so happy you were able to do so! It is always so cool to pick up on things that we somehow seem to miss whilst viewing on the small screen. Along with you, we finally had an opportunity to see this film on the big screen in 2014. I was very impressed with this screening and noted several major differences from the small to big screen experience.

This afternoon at 4:15PM EDT: Our Vines have Tender Grapes Edward G. Robinson, Margaret O'Brien, James Craig, Agnes Moorehead Originally recommended to me by Dave (veggieburgher), this film is outstanding! Highly effectual, pulling on the heartstrings from beginning to end, I consider this film to be a must see, must own, must recommend, classic film Essential. The brilliance of versatility in the acting abilities of Edward G. Robinson displayed in this performance is nothing short of stunning - not at all what one would expect to see from him. As always, the performance delivered by Margaret O'Brien is natural perfection. Absolutely captivating, often the viewer may be overwhelmed by the many amazing moments this film has to offer. Viewing this film will be time well spent, catch it if you can and be sure to have a box of tissues handy, it's a tearjerker! Enjoy!!!

Yes indeed. The technology of the 60's screening was a disappointment in that the print was really yellowed, though it was a fresh reprint. They overdid the tint. The movie however was pretty good.

Tonight's Essential: Stella Dallas LOVE this film! Barbara Stanwyck is absolutely brilliant in this role, one of her finest Oscar-nominated performances. There are several poignant moments which leave us with no doubt as to why this film is a must see, classic film Essential. The last scene is one not to be missed! This is a great film for mother-daughter night in. Break out a box of tissues, this one is a tearjerker!

This morning we were watching 50 First Dates with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. Drew is sooooo cute in this film, she reminds me of Paul in the sense that she has never lost her ability to be delightfully cute. Like Paul, there is a certain sweetness that shines through in her performances and interviews - truly heartwarming. LOVE to see Drew with Robert Osborne introducing the Essentials

A couple of goodies today... Mildred Pierce (12:30PM EDT) - Joan Crawford, Ann Blyth Joan Crawford took home an Oscar for her brilliant performance in this gripping film. Ann Blyth delivers a stunning performance as the infamous Veda, a character whom classic film fans absolutely LOVE to hate! Wonderful Oscar-nominated cinematography which greatly supports the intensity of the story telling every step of the way. A classic film collection Essential not to be missed! Enjoy!!! Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (6PM EDT) - Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman Elizabeth Taylor is sizzling with Paul Newman who also turns up the heat as chemistry overflows between the two in this mesmerizing film. Both Taylor and Newman earned Oscar nominations for their memorable performances. LOVE this film!!! Taylor is at the height of her beauty and Newman is...

Absolutely mesmerized by Nosferatu early this morning - sooooo scary! Horror films scheduled all day! I am looking forward to Horror of Dracula (3PM EDT) with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and Dracula, Prince of Darkness (4:30PM EDT) with Christopher Lee. ![](http://serve.mysmiley.net/scared/scared0016.gif[/img] [img]http://serve.mysmiley.net/scared/scared0016.gif"/>

Tonight at 8PM EDT: Star of the Month Janet Leigh Hitchcock's Psycho Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, Martin Balsam Last Sunday we had an opportunity to see this film on the big screen. WOW!!! HUGE difference in the small to big screen experience - sooooo frightening!!! The cinematography is absolutely brilliant! The scene in which Martin Balsam is checking the motel register and Anthony Hopkins is looming overhead is an entirely different experience on the big screen, much more threatening and telling of impending doom for the detective - sooooo eerie!!! This film is a must-see for Hitch fans! If able to do so, try to catch Alfred Hitchcock's appearance on the D i c k Cavett Show airing just prior to Psycho at 6:45PM EDT. Great fun for Hitch fans! Enjoy!!! ![](http://serve.mysmiley.net/scared/scared0016.gif[/img] [img]http://serve.mysmiley.net/scared/scared0016.gif"/>

Many times I enjoy the cadence, dialog, .... speed or deliberate interactions ..... and sometimes all the detail in the movie .... just a quick input for now

Hi Fool, Glad to know that you are periodically enjoying bits and pieces of classic film. Please feel free to discuss classic film in general within this thread, not limiting yourself to TCM airings. A while back, I received a request to revise this thread title to include classic film discussion in general. I had forgotten all about that request until I read your post about this being a TCM thread. ops: I have now revised the thread title to include classic film discussion in general.
