Why not collaborate with Gilmour or Page instead of Kanye
-
Well, everything he did with The Beatles in the 60s was such a huge success, everything they touched went to number 1, I think his solo career is colored by this to a degree, for better or worse maybe... I wish he'd collaborate with someone like Marianne Faithfull, Robert Wyatt, Brian Setzer or Teenage Fanclub... I don't know if it would be smash hits, but I think it would be be musically very good.

How do they decide which songs go in the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart anyway?. How are Paul's songs with Michael Jackson R&B? (they're certainly not hip hop, and neither is Ibory and Ebony).
-
True R&B to me is the piano boogie of Katie Webster and "What'd I Say" by Ray Charles, much of the R&B charts I hear on the radio are mainly just commercial pop songs to my ears, it's got a rhythm but less blues.

Ray Charles covered Elvis?..... What'd I Say was a great Elvis song. I'm just joking! Although the Elvis version is better.

Not that Ray didn't nail it either! A great song.

Can't say I associate "What'd I Say" with Elvis before Ray Charles, he is the best singer ever to my liking and he also did "Hey Jude" but even a genius interpreter like him couldn't win every time.

Carlos Santana's career was getting stale until he collaborated w/ some young talented musicians to make his "Supernatural" album which has a record number of grammy's. If Paul wants to keep his career to be progressive & get the younger fans listening to his music he was smart to collaborate w/ Kanye & Rihanna. After all it's the younger generation buying most of the music.

Well, I remember Prince did basically the same thing with "Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic" at the same time as Santana, and it was as huge a flop as Santana's "Supernatural" was a success. Personally, I actually prefer Prince's album, there are some good catchy songs on it, I rank it among his more underrated albums.

Prince lost his funk for a long, long time. His last few albums might as well have been "lite jazz" releases -- too produced. I'm liking his current 3rdEyeGirl project a lot. I hope he rides this one out. BTW: I agree with Hendrix Ibsen: There's hardly any "b" in r&b these days -- I think they've gone back to calling it that; it was "urban contemporary" for a while.

Many liked the new song. For me it was nothing special. what I didnt like is those comments that says Kanye helped an ex-Beatle to be famous again!!! Didn't Paul knew this is a way far from his name and history??? Paul always like to collaborate with talented musicians, and it is always good to exchange music ideas. But with all names in the world, why did he choose a very different type of music to be in???? what will that song add to him or his name??? Why not do something with Billy Joel or David Gilmour who is always happy to do that with him?? and they are much more in the same level or type of music?? Jimmy page? Elvis Costello?
I doubt the press would even report it if it's just a bunch of old guys. So you can shy he did with Kanye and that rauncy Young woman

R&B, pop, rock, jazz, classical, techno, hip hop, folk, country. Every genre has a million subgenres and branches flailing all over the place. My favorite type of music? Good.

Growing up in the 80s I consider Prince the most exiting recording artist of the decade, "Purple Rain", "Around the World in a Day", "Parade", these are albums with one foot in 60's pyschedelica and irresistably catchy songs. In the 90s he put together a new band, The New Power Generation, maybe technically better than The Revolution but with less ramshackle charm. I still enjoy his music to this day and have every studio album in my collection, "Plectrumelectrum" with 3rdEyeGirl is a fun enough rock album. Of his work the last twenty years I think mid-2000 records like "Musicology" and "3121" ranks among my favorites.

I'm willing to give Musicology another listen. Didn't click with me back in the day.

He would know.

My IQ just went up a couple of points after seeing that.

Great vid and one of the great things about youtube. Miles Davis once said that it was not possible to play anything on a trumpet that Louis Armstrong had not already played. A complete musician genius.

Since we've veered off topic and onto Louis Armstrong, let me highly recommend Terry Teachout's excellent biography, "Pops," published in 2009. Armstrong was a fascinating guy, in addition to being one of the great musical talents of the 20th century.

Duly noted.

Too bad Paul can't collaborate with Satchmo. Actually, with today's technology, he can.
