I really like the song and video , it's most certainly a McCartney Melody it reminds me a bit of Ram On that kind of simple little melody that Paul can just pluck out of nowhere. He looks cool in the video even a little dirty and mean, a bit like Ronnie Wood who I always think looks like he needs a good wash

"FourFIveSeconds" jumps from #54 to #15 on the Hot 100, even higher than Billboard predicted, and these numbers were tabulated before the video debuted. It's now officially McCartney's biggest hit since 1986, and almost certain to jump past "Spies Like Us" and "No More Lonely Nights" to become his biggest hit since...hmm, "Say Say Say"! The article says that Paul does provide backing vocals in addition to guitar. Not sure if that's confirmed officially. http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6458469/mark-ronson-bruno-mars-hot-100-rihanna-kanye-west-paul-mccartney

I'm pretty surprised of all this, the 3 songs with Rihanna, Kanye and Diana Krall (enough to get back here after a long time). One thing is for sure, Paul is about DIVERSITY these days, doing all kind of music things, probably like nobody else does. If I go to wikipedia it says FourFiveSeconds is written by.... 9! people. lol And it's not Bohemian Rhapsody but some lyrics and melody and some guitar. I wonder, as Paul says, "Who did this and who did that" but it could be 100 % written by Paul. The lyrics could be "Life Of A Party Girl", a song that was supposed to be in New, according to a Paul interview in Rolling Stone. I don't get how 9 people can write this, maybe it was a big jam or so... maybe Paul wants to hide his authorship a little bit. Kind of what he did in the 60s writting a song for Peter and Gordon using a fake name to know if his song would be as commercial as if people knew it was his song. The answer then was NO. Today is the other way around. Will he sell more if he writes for Rihanna, Kanye or.... PSY or whoever like that, than if for himself?. YES. Yes, Paul, fame matters more than quality for charts. I guess he already knows, and we should know after all this time.

When I first heard the song, it reminded me of 'Another Day'. Paul probably wrote the entire music for this song. I think he relishes being in the background of a "band", similar to the Beatles where he alone didnt have to carry the entire load.

It's #1 or bust for Mr. McCartney.

I watched the video to this again. It's a pretty good song! Also, Paul plays a Taylor guitar in the video, which is cool. I play Taylor guitars too!

I'm pretty sure the new song did come out of some kind of jam session, so if there were nine people there, I guess they all got credited. Sure doesn't sound like nine people on the recording, though. And I assume you're talking about Paul's song "Woman," written under the pseudonym Bernard Webb. Yes, funny that wasn't a hit for Peter & Gordon without Paul's real name attached. Welcome back, by the way.

The new Rihanna video picked up over 1.5 million views in the first 12 hours or so. Combine that with continuing strong sales (#4 on iTunes as I write this) and steady grown on radio suggests it will continue moving up the charts this week and next at the very least. The person who called it a flop (ahem) might consider retracting that statement.
Hope Paul tops the charts again. He needs it.
Oh yeah...he needs it.
I don't believe Rihanna's fans will ever be interested in Paul's music or attend Paul's concerts On the other hand, it'd be pretty sad to see Paul topping the charts with these collaborations and not with his own music
"On the other hand, it'd be pretty sad to see Paul topping the charts with these collaborations and not with his own music". McCartney's music for the last 10-15 years have received critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations. His releases have for the most part entered the charts in the top 10 which is pretty darn good but to expect an artist in his 60-70's to be a huge seller is not being realistic. These songs are not topping the charts because of McCartney, the young people are buying it because they like Kanye or Rihanna. I really don't think McCartney cares about it charting, think he has had plenty of chart success in his career- lol.
That's exactely what i meant to say I really don't care about charts, i care more about music And Paul can do whatever he wants to do, if he likes to sing with young artists, write a novel o paint a canvas (just to say) then he just will, he won't need our approval (As for me, i'm a die hard fan so i buy everything he is involved in, form cornelius rifo to riahnna though most of this stuff is laying untouched on my shelves )

He is my personal take on Macca. He is my fav artist for one primary reason - I like songs with strong melodies and imo he is the best writer of melodies in the last 50 years. I don't really care if a song is rock, pop, country, classical, jazz, blues - if it has a strong melody i'm probably going to like it. IMO Macca does this better than anyone else. So word may come out with him working with an artist I don't care for - but because Macca is involved I will certainly listen to it at least once, even if I don't like the pairing on first hearing about it. I don't love everything Macca has put out, there are songs I don't even like, but I tend to like more of what he has put out more than anyone else. I still don't care for the Kanye collaboration, but I like the Rihanna/Kanye one alot. I think it has a strong melody and i enjoy listening to it. Some of the Fireman music I could never get into, but others of it I like alot. I'm happy that FourFiveSeconds is doing well, even if you can't hear him in the vocal mix (though he reportedly did sing backup vocals). This is really the only way a young person is going to get introduced to and have a chance to hear a song that clearly has a strong Macca influence on its melody. Given the long list of songwriters credit i'd be willing to bet that the song was created in the studio with Macca largely devising the melody with others than adding to it and adding lyrics. With its big jump (54-15) coming this week without a video, it is all but guaranteed to take another big jump next week into at least the top 10. Sort of ironic that the #1 right now is a song by Mark Ronson (who Macca worked with on New) with help from Bruno Mars. RamblinRed

Upon review of this song and video, I really like it. I think it was my Not really digging Kanye that clouded my view in the beginning. The song and video are really cool. I like the lyrics. Maybe it is not poetry as The Beatles but they use phrases younger people can relate to. I like Rihanna in it. She is gorgeous and does not have to flash her nudeness to be beautiful, but if that is what the public wants then whatever. So I am digging this song. And I like Kanye in it too. Oh, and Paul is pretty neat in it as well.

It's quite ironic that Rihanna is "fully dressed" in the video with little make-up, Kanye doesn't rap, and Paul doesn't sing and it's not the center of attention. Like the 3 of them going away of themselves. Kind of if Elton John played guitar with Brian May on the drums and Mike Oldfield on vocals. BTW, It reminds me of the real story of Elton, Rod Stewart and Freddie Mercury wanting to form a band under the name "Hair, Nose and Teeth" like meaning the worst of each, but never happened "cause Freddie would like to call it "Teeth, Hair and Nose." Elton would like "Nose" first, etc."

One reason for me to go away from here is the New album. I didn't like, I don't like it and I think I'll never like it but I didn't want to argue here about it over and over. Right now, for me the New album would be muuuuch better with Cut Some Slack, Scared, FourFiveSeconds, Only One, Petrushka, Hope For The Future, If I Take You Home Tonight and Meat Free Monday. With only New, Queenie Eye, Early Days and perhaps some other staying. That way then it doesn't look like Paul has lost his talent for making music. IMO.

Petrushka is a song Paul plays at soundchecks, and sometimes in concerts. It seems like a joke but is a really happy tune. Meat Free Monday is a song for a Paul's campaign. He recorded it at the studio but I prefer his simpler version. Petrushka live in London

I agree with the below quote. Except for the single "New" - which I believe is a masterpiece and should have been a hit single, and a handful of other songs mentioned below, the album New was subpar Paul - lots of half-baked rather sloppy tunes not sung very well ("Hosanna" anyone?) with a notable absence of great Paul melodies overall. Not even close to Flowers or Tug of War. That said, it is incredible to see Paul's name on a single now at # 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles - amazing. That one could hit #1 and I hope it does - long overdue! prudence1964 wrote: 21st Century Paul wrote: favoritething wrote: ... Welcome back, by the way. Smile.. I heard the song twice in my 20 minute commute home.
