VALE CILLA BLACK

"Paul said growing up there made you hungry to leave" (beatlesfanrandy post)--A Brit Net friend recently told me "Liverpool is the most beautiful city in England." Is that true? One supposes The Pool was just bustling and lively enough to make them wish to see more. Paul was probably born peripatetic, he's always been a ramblin' man, he is one lucky ducky having been just about everywhere several times over--am very glad for him, he is blessed. Getting back to Cilla though and on topic: why in the world would anyone call her a "plastic scouser"? From what I've seen of her she appears quite genuine and down to earth, a Liddypool version of a "good ol' gal" who always made the Fabs feel warm and comfy and Eppy just adored her.

Liverpool cracked the irrits when they moved to London in '63! There's still heaps of locals can't stand 'em. But that's largely due to the fact that every day they're subjected to Beatles this and Beatles that. Can't blame them. Obviously the city welcomes the revenue the band generates. It's only the visitors who imagine EVERYBODY in Liverpool lives and breathes The Beatles.
In the late 80s my girlfriend was from Liverpool. To her, the Beatles were just local dudes, and what was the big deal???

I hear ya. I first visited in early 1981. It was like the wild west in the 1800's. Nothing Beatles whatsoever. Maybe a postcard or two in a shop. That was it. I had to visit places via bus. It was a scary, rough as guts, dour, depressing place back then. And in Mathew Street - no Cavern. The place to be was Eric's.

I loved Liverpool when I visited last year and it is lovely, but the city has changed of course over the years since The Beatles' time, just like any city does. I think it depends on when a person lived/grew up in Liverpool. I have a co-worker who's grandfather grew up there in the 30s and it was a very rough place to live is what he always told him. Liverpool has gone through it's tough moments over the years but is thriving now and I fell in love with the city while there. So much to see and do and the people were lovely to us, no matter where we went. Hoping I get to go back again next year to explore more.

Liverpool (and Manchester) are now great cities to visit. Clean, worldly and vibrant but they still retain their soul. ...BUT in the case of Liverpool...it can still be a very dangerous place if one is not careful. I like both cities very much.

Sir Cliff Richard will sing at Cilla Black's funeral, it was announced today online. I don't know much about him, but he seems too goody two shoes or something and I hated the songs by him that I did hear. Maybe he's a fantastic Liverpudlian, for all I know. Does anyone know something about him to share. He seems a fuzzy obscure figure from the past over here in the U.S.

^ trying to get gossip on cliff on the day of cilla's funeral seems a bit off to me..

Cliff Richards, love him or hate him, is NOT a fuzzy, obscure figure. He has sold 250 million records world wide and was a very close friend of Cilla Black. He is a star in his own right and is a good choice for such a memorial.

Watching the tv coverage I spotted Mike McCartney at the church....at least it looked like him. No Paul but he probably didn't want to break into his holiday.

Why do you care whether Paul was at Cilla's funeral? They have barely been photographed together in 40 years. They didn't socialize regularly. Should Paul go to every funeral of someone he knew but hasn't seen much of in 40 years? That's a pretty long list. Why isn't it enough that Paul issued a statement, sent flowers, and asked his brother to represent him? I've seen a couple comments about this on the Daily Fail -- criticizing Paul and Ringo for not flying back for the funeral -- and I just don't get why people feel the need to sit in judgment about how someone else shows their respects.

Why do you take every comment as a criticism of Paul and feel a need to defend him? It was just an observation that Paul was not at the funeral. No big deal. It isn't an attack on his character or anything. :

Why do you feel the need to attack anyone who defends Paul? You're not the forum police here. You don't like my comment, move along. I have a right to state my opinion, which is that suggesting that Paul couldn't be bothered to interrupt his vacation is needlessly judgmental. How he pays his respects is up to him.

You are ridiculous. When I read a ridiculous post from you, I am compelled to bring order back to the forum universe. That doesn't make me the forum police. It makes me the forum super hero.

Actually, if it's alright to say so I have read that Paul didn't attend his own father's funeral. He was too distraught to face going through that and also didn't want it to become a big circus with Paul the focus. I'm not disparaging him, I didn't go to my father's, either. Maybe he didn't want to distract or take away from Cilla's moment.

Go pick a fight with someone else. I'm not interested. How Paul pays his respect is his business.

I thought he didn't attend his dad's funeral owing to Wings planning/rehearsing/tour commitments. Priorities.
