Am I the only one here who likes MAF and Chaos roughly equally? They're different sides of the coin, but both great in their own way. I do agree, though, with the complaints about the production on MAF. It doesn't kill the listening experience for me, but definitely a problem.
Couldn't agree more Bruce. I like both equally and they are so different. As I think you said, Chaos is Paul's Revolver and then Paul just "lets loose" on MAF. Think of all the good to great songs. The next question is...how many of those songs are on Paul's 2017 Setlist? We know the answer...zero.
Maybe they're not old enough to get into the setlist. :
Or not Beatles enough to get into the setlist.

Before I get into the songs, I forgot to mention (as Paul fans know) the great contributions of some the great guests on Flaming Pie. They include Steve Miller (on 3 tracks), Ringo Starr (on 2 tracks), James McCartney (1 track) and Jeff Lynne on several of the songs plus production. Last but certainly not least is George Martin's tremendous orchestration on 2 gorgeous tracks.
Track by Track summary (10 being the best grade) The Song We Were Singing 6 The World Tonight 8. If You Wanna 4 Somedays 8 Young Boy 6 Calico Skies 7 Flaming Pie 5 Heaven on a Sunday 7 Used to be Bad 2 Souvenir 9 Little Willow 7 Really Love You 2 Beautiful Night 7 Great Day 6 Like most of his albums it is all over the place. B+ Must try harder
WOW! Only 7s for Calico Skies, Little Willow, Beautiful Night and an 8 for Somedays? I'd give all of them a 10! I love this album!

Track by Track summary (10 being the best grade) The Song We Were Singing 7 The World Tonight 7 If You Wanna 6 - It sounds like filler, but is not unpleasant Somedays 9 Young Boy 6 - I remember a review saying that if this took 15 minutes to write, then it must have taken Paul 10 minutes to sharpen his pencil (or words to that effect) Calico Skies 9 Flaming Pie 7 Heaven on a Sunday 7 Used to be Bad 6 Souvenir 8 Little Willow 9 Really Love You 6 - An obvious jam, but I don't mind the half-baked element Beautiful Night 8 - Despite the terrible "local neighbourhood" lyric Great Day 7 On the whole it's an 8 out of 10 album and I would hypothesize that Flaming Pie did a lot to change Paul's reputation. I remember one review saying that the embarrassing uncle was gone and the music legend had returned. Since its release Paul's new albums seem to have been much better received and even his older albums have been looked at in a different light...

Today's the day! Happy 20th Flaming Pie I love this album so much, especially Beautiful Night

My podcast discussion/reflection of this album. This is also posted in the What's That You're Doing Section. ================================= https://2legspodcast.podbean.com/e/flaming-pie/ "Flaming Pie" May 30, 2017 2Legs is back! 20 years ago (yes 20!) and fresh off the heels of The Beatles Anthology Paul McCartney released one of his best albums to date. Join Tom Hunyady and David Gargalino as they discuss 1997's "Flaming Pie!" With no album needed for two years Paul was able to take his time and write and record at his own leisure. While doing so he had the help of Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne and Steve Miller, as well as Linda and son James. The result ended up being one of his most fun and critically acclaimed albums! I listened to all of Flaming Pie on my way home from AROTR today! (and also tons of other Beatles/McCartney songs - took me 7 hrs and 15 mins to get home!)

I wish Paul thought it was a recent one & keep some of the songs in the setlist! (great idea Eeee Cor B)

i don't really have the time to post enough though I guess we should be grateful he's at least done Flaming Pie and Calico Skies live. Though so many more are calling out for a go.
-
But it's a shame he's never done The World Tonight, Young Boy, Beautiful Night or Souvenir.

________________________________________________________ You are so right Bruce. Let me add Little Willow. Flaming Pie and Tug of War (2 of this best albums) were so ignored by Paul during his 2002 and 2005, 2011 tours etc. and it baffles me. How about Take It Away, Wanderlust, Somebody Who Cares, Tug of War (the song), Ballroom Dancing, and the Pound is Sinking never being done live. If you had written those so underrated songs, wouldn't you want to bring them back for the world to hear! I'll never understand it. Yet he brings out Let Me Roll It to You and Lady Madonna on every tour/show. The same questions we have been asking since 2002. Why do you choose to ignore the great Solo songs.

I've always liked them equally, perfect description...different sides of the coin. I often play them back to back.

Agreed, Beautiful Night would be my first choice of those, love them all...

If I remember correctly, it was hailed at the time as Paul's "comeback" album (for the nth time in his career...lol). OTG was very poorly received, both critically & commercially, & The Beatles had just released Anthology to wide acclaim. Looking back, i think the album is a bit over-rated. A lot of 'good' & 'average' songs, but not many high points as in most Macca albums. Also, the 2 clunkers are clearly the Steve Miller songs which should have been left off!

Different strokes I guess. I like the bluesy quality of this:

___________________________________________________________ Joey, I respect your opinion but we will have to agree to disagree. In my opinion, Paul Post Wings has had 5 very, very good albums. They are Tug, Flowers, Flaming Pie, Chaos and Maf. Almost every, even masterpiece type albums (even great ones like Sgt. Pepper) will often have a clunker or, to put it better, a couple of lesser quality songs. Sgt. Pepper for example had Within You Without You. It's not that it is a bad song but it didn't really fit the rest of the songs. As much as George Martin tried (he put it as the opening song on side 2 which was smart), it really didn't fit well with the rest of the songs. In fact, John, Paul and Ringo didn't even play on it. Getting back to Flaming Pie, I disagree that "Pie" had a "lot of good and average songs". Again, in my opinion, songs like The World Tonight, Somedays, Young Boy, Calico Skies, Souvenir, Little Willow and Beautiful Night are far better than just good or average. They are very good. Put those songs on Beatle albums that got massive airplay at the time and many of them would be considered classics today. I would put Somedays, Little Willow and Beautiful Night as great songs and every bit as good as Paul's greatest Beatle songs. Yes, Paul as usual, did throw a couple of clunkers on Flaming Pie. The real clunker, in my opinion, is Really Love You where Paul and Ringo are just playing around in the studio. It is basically a "jam session" type song. It doesn't ruin the album for me but in hindsight Paul could have replaced it with another really good song (e.g, Wings on a Nightingale). The rest of the album has what I call "good" album cuts, songs that fit well on the album. They would include The Song We Were Singing (nice opening track), If You Wanna, Heaven on a Sunday, Great Day and the title cut. I understand that Used to be Bad is an average track but to me it does fit well on the album. Flaming Pie is not for everyone and I understand your view. I just have a different point of view. I consider it one of his best Solo albums because of the many very good to classic Macca songs on it.

BJ, are you sure Joey wasn't talking about OTG, which he referred to in his post? ETA: Probably not, since the Steve Miller songs were on Flaming Pie. I disagree with him too, btw.
